I have a 1969 M20C with (I think) the original instrument panel... The artificial horizon (RC Allen 22-7) has failed and will either need an overhaul or replacement.  On aircraft spruce, they ask for tilt angle (options are 0, 8, and custom).  Off hand, does anyone know the instrument panel tilt angle for a 1969 M20C?

It seems like there will be better options (electronic) in the near future.  For now, I got a quote of $475 to overhaul with Kelly Manufacturing, $595 for an overhaul exchange at Aircraft Spruce or $859 for a new unit at aircraft spruce.  Leaning towards the middle option but open to feedback if others recommend an alternate solution.

Thanks,
Tom

The older ones had an instrument panel with a tilt, yours doesn't look like it is tilted. If the face of the instrument is vertical when you are flying then you need a zero tilt.

Anybody with 1969 M20C know if there is a tilt in the instrument panel.  I'm on the road so can't check myself til next week.  I was hoping to order the replacement unit to be installed when I get home.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

I"m 90% sure that it is 0.  Others with a 1969 Mooney can chime in.  This is the same panel used in all 1969 models.

Did you ever get your dimmer/annunciator issue worked out?

I ordered an overhauled Artifical Horizon with 0 degree tilt.  We shall find out next week if that was correct.

The annunciator issue still exists.  Someday I'd like to sort it out.  At least I have a vacuum gauge to reference!

Older Cs ('65) had a horizontal line.  Above the line (ASI, AI) was 0, below the line a few degrees of tilt.

Are you seeing a horizontal line in the panel?

There is a way to confirm this.  Probably the maintenance manual.

Roughly, an iPhone app will do the job...  The plane when parked horizontally perfect has a seam on the tail cone or an acces panel that is considered 0°.  Measure that and measure the face of the instruments and compare....

looking for a 0 or 8° degree shift won't be too hard.  If you don't have a horizontal line then your panel is vertical...

If it is off by one or two degrees... That's a different problem.  The little rubber shock absorbers may need to be swapped out....

A new set of acorn nuts will help pretty up the panel if you have old ugly ones there.  Brass makes a good material for not distracting the compass.

PP ideas.  I am not a mechanic...

Best regards,
