grami-air Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 I never paid much attention to this before, but I noticed on the #5 cylinder (front right cyl) there is a plate that covers about 50% of the cylinder, but on the #6 cylinder (front left cyl) there is no plate. We bought the plane 1 year ago, and it has a reman engine that was installed in 1991. Can anybody explain what the purpose of this plate is and why doesn't the #6 cylinder have one. Quote
Houman Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Probably part of the baffaling for proper air distribution for cooling ??? Quote
Shadrach Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 The cylinders are identical. On one side the cooling fins terminate at the barrel casting (it's a small area and the fins taper into the barrel). If you look down on cylinder #5 from the top with a light in the lower cowl, I am betting you will not be able to see light in the front side of the barrel. Lycomings are the same way. I am assuming that the plate on number five merily covers that part of the cylinder. It may or may not have any effect on cooling. Does #5 run hot? Quote
Shadrach Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Homan, I somehow. Have 2 Avatars and one of them is yours... Quote
grami-air Posted September 10, 2015 Author Report Posted September 10, 2015 Yes, the #5 cylinder does run hot and I have new EGT & CHT probes installed on the #5 cylinder. My mechanic says that the majority of the cooling (baffling) comes from the top of the cowl and not directly from the front of the engine which explains why the plate has a bend in it over the front top which appears to deflect the air down and over the #5 cylinder. Was wondering why the #6 cylinder does not have a plate as well? Quote

peevee Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 I always assumed it had to do with the oil cooler somehow Quote
philiplane Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 The baffle placement has to do with the way air comes off the prop and into the cowl inlets. #5 is on the front right, where the descending blade forces too much air into the cylinder's forward fins, so the baffle deflects that air up to distribute the air more uniformly. Cylinder #6 on the left side is in front of an ascending blade, so there is less ram pressure at the blade root to cylinder fin interface. So no baffle is needed on that side. 1 Quote
Zwaustin Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 always wondered this myself on my m20k... my #5 runs hotter and my #6 runs cooler according to EDM700 Quote
FlyWalt Posted September 13, 2015 Report Posted September 13, 2015 Agreed. My No. 5 cylinder is the warmest of the group. Quote
