Fishermen rely on GPS to find their traps and fishing spots. Are the feds going to pay for the loss of the catch? Why they don't do these tests where there are no GPS taxpayers. José

I bought a (back-up, back-up) Garmin hikers GPS for less than $100 that is GPS WAAAS and Glonass capable. No data base, but I have the coordinates for ATL entered, so I can find anythng I need. Such a device for $100 makes me wonder why ADSB w/GPS installed are twice the price of non-GPS ADSB devices. Oh, I know....."Certified", right? 1
fastforward Posted June 19, 2015 Report Posted June 19, 2015 This is first time I have seen a graphical depiction of these GPS outages. I've only seen the long convoluted text versions that have a series of lat lons. I backtracked to the source of Piloto's link and found the main page: http://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/notices_public.aspx Much better to be able to see on a map. Looks like AZ, NV an AK will also have GPS interference.
testwest Posted June 23, 2015 Report Posted June 23, 2015 And this is why I put a KN63 DME as an initial install on my other airplane. Look at your approach plates and find out how many ILS approaches also require DME if there is no GPS. There are not many, so folks in the GPS affected areas may find themselves dealing with "radar required" ILSs without a DME on board.
