I took my 231 up for the first time since our local mechanic replaced 3 pushrod seals in the engine.  Everything was great until I went to push the cowl flaps closed.  To my surprise they popped right back out to the trail position.  Anyone have ideas on what the problem could be?

He may have rigged them too tight so the linkage doesn't go over center. Ask him if he changed the cowl flap linkage. Do they work OK on the ground? Set them to closed, climb out and try to push the cowl flaps open.

I had the same issue about 2 years ago following the annual. I tracked the problem down to interference with the over-center linkage on the left firewall and the breather/drain tubes attached to the firewall in the same area. Should be some thing simple.

Good luck.

I had the same issue in my K model just a few months ago.  The issue in my case was the drain lines that extend toward the left cowl flap had dropped down and they were pushing against the inside of the cowl flap.  A tie wrap to hold them out of the way was the fix for me.

Good luck!

Had the same problem when I purchased my J, just after completing its Annual. Found the problem was an inproperly secured SCAT hose against which the cowl open/ close linkage was rubbing AND cutting into the hose. Replaced the hose and secured it properly, and no more problem.

Well Mike. What was it ??

It seems the breather tubes got tweaked and were sticking too far down out of the cowling.  It would allow the flaps to close on the ground, but when any pressure was applied to them they popped back to trailing.
