I think all the quick drains are "after market, 3rd party" and there are a least 3 different sizes (diameters) depending upon which drain you have installed. I borrowed all of them from my friendly A&P and got my own after the first oil change I did myself.

I don't know which quick drain you have, but I found this Q/A on the Aircraft Spruce page for the quick drains:

>>>"3/8" ID rubber hose.<<<

My '66E has a different ID than my friend's '67F. Mine if the smallest of the 3 sizes the shop has to have for various planes he works on, probably 3/8" I'll check in a few minutes.

I always wrap a piece of lock wire around the hose and wrap it around the intake pipe. I have found over the years that the hot oil will make the hose expand and then fall off making a big mess. At least put a ty-wrap around the hose above the barb.

Mine uses a 3/8 hose, and as mentioned above if the oil is very hot the hose can come off it not tied.  I buy a 25' roll of clear flex tube from Lows and cut off about 3 ft each time.

Good idea!  Thanks.

I bought a 10' piece of 3/8" ID tubing, and a brass barbed connector. Measure and cut the tube to length. Put the brass in a drill and sand one end down a little; the unsanded end will be permanently in the tube. I use empty laundry detergent buckets to hold several changes of oil. The brass holds the free end down in the bucket, slip the other end onto the quick drain.

After it all drains out, pull the hose out of the bucket and wipe it clean. Then slip the engine end onto the sanded piece of brass, and you'll not drip any remaining oil out of the hose between changes. Plus, the hose us now in a loop and can be hung on a nail / peg in the hangar wall until you need it again. The tubing can be removed from the sanded piece of brass for your next oil change.

Hank,

Thanks for the tip. I reuse mine, and have wrapped a piece of safety wire close to one end to hang it by. But it does drip a little oil. I like your idea of plugging one end into the other.

Sorry I didn't respond to your pm before been busy at the summit, getting home ect.......

The advice is good....3/8 tubing. If your not gonna fly it for a few days/week....leave the quick drain open and the 1/2 quart that stays up on the engine parts after shut down will drain off at day 3-5...

Take care doc!

Didn't realize they come in both sizes....if you pull your bottom cowl off (and you should to inspect for loose things ect) and you don't have a hose put a oil pan under it and let it drain then just wipe off the intake exhaust tubes when done....never done that in my J but it would work.....wonder if the C is different

Yes! This happened to me too. I now have a hose clamp as part of the oil change kit.
