I have a 430w and use foreflight with a stratus 2.  I plan to replace my KT-76 with a KT-74 at some point.  Is there a way to use this combo to display traffic on either the 430 or the ipad?

You can display on the iPad because you meet ADSB-out requirements in and outside the US, all altitudes - because of your mode-S transponder with ES. But your only device for ADSB-in is the stratus - so you can only see traffic and weather on the ipad

You cannot see it on the garmin - for that you will need a compatible ADSB-in device. There is one from freeflight. There is the same thing from Bendix King KG130 for cheaper (get receiver only model for 2k). You dont need a WAAS GPS with that device because you already have the 430W

Actually, because the King KT-74 is a mode S transponder, it will display traffic on the Garmin 430W when it is in the vicinity of one of the few facilities that transmits Mode S traffic if your installer makes the connection.  I have heard that the Mode S reporting is much slower refresh than ADS-B and is primarily around Class B airspace.

thanks.  I actually prefer it to be displayed on the ipad.  much larger screen with better resolution.

Robert,

King will be at the Mooney Summit and you can get a first hand answer to exactly what you need to do. Keep in mind, the KT74 is a slide in replacement for the 76a thru c, but does require a tray change for the KT76. Make sure you spend some quality time with Jay Spears and get the right info. You would need to run a wire to the 430W for a position source, along with buying an inexpensive airspeed switch. Now all you have to do is address the ADS-B receiver portion of the equation. King has a 1500 or so solution for that or you could use a skyradar, or a stratus B or whatever your ipad flight bag of choice would have you use for ads-b reception. Your C fortunately has a nice radio access panel to get at the xponder to change out the tray without too much of a hassle. Hopefully, the previous avionics guy left an engineering loop in the connector wire so replacing the connector wont be a hassle either.
