Thanks Carusoam, I am actually having a meeting with our new owner this morning and I am going to bring up the question about doing vendor sponsorships on various forums. I use forums quite a bit for my hobbies (jeeps and diesels) so I think that it is a good thing for us to engage in.

When HDTV came out there was a mandate and that mandate was pushed off time and time again. Then the Gubmint made HDTV receivers available to poor people and grandparents with old televisions so they could still get the news. So I hope by 2020 someone makes a simple gps transponder combination that poor ga pilots can get for next to nothing because it is subsidized by the FAA. I hope I fall into this category. For once I'd like to get a handout like the Obamaphone lady :)

The free flight box is the only one I see doing that so far but it's still not "cheap". It has the built in WAAS receiver, ADS-B in/out, and wifi. With that you can keep your existing transponder.

I'm not sure what box you are talking about but I expect the faa to make them available for $99 installed :)

$99!!!!!

What a rip-off. I'm not paying that.

ADS-B noob needs help.

I have a GTN750 and a GTX33ES - what else do i need for ADS-B?

actually i thought this is enough however the "Traffic" button on the 750 is blacked-out.

best regards,

Luke

You need nothing but to have it configured properly. The "ES" satisfies your out.

You will only get TIS-A traffic though, the ADS-B traffic is TIS-B (faster).

Ok - verdict is in.  Airplane came back from Avionics shop on Sunday with the trig TT31 ADSB out transponder fully installed including for ADSB-out.

with my ipad + GDL39-3d for my ADSB-in products, yes I am now getting what seems to be a full traffic picture.  Please see pictures attached.  There were some traffic close enough that I could actually spot it visually and there it was.  This is showing a much more complete picture than the gdl39 alone was showing, as expected.

Over all I love it.  And the twist turn input is actually quite fine.

You're in my neck of the woods! Whatcha doing in Lancaster?

BTW -- you are getting full TIS-B. I will get it periodically when I parasite off of someone near me. The traffic difference between TIS-B and just FIS-B is pretty dramatic.

Weber Aircraft.  Mecca of East Coast Mooneys.  PM sent.

Yeah - full TIS-B is pretty cool!  How do you like my iphone 4 which I recycled as a full time traffic display?

I thought Mike said the Bendix guy would be at the mooney summit.  I'm going to pick his brain a little b/c I'm interested in putting a KT74 in this year.  My 76A is starting to act up and I'd like to trade it in while it's still working.

Yes, Rob, Jay Shears and Chuck Burkhead from BK will kick off the presentations at 8:30 AM Sat. talking about ADS-B, where we are, where it is going, what needs to be done yet and by whom. They are limited to an hour and a half for the presentation and Q&A, but will be there also at the Reception party Fri night. Ill make sure to introduce them, as like you, a lot of us want to pick their brains. You simply need to slide in the kt74, wire it to the approved waas GPS source and provide an air data switch in the pitot system for ADS-B out.

There will be a lot of Subject matter experts at the Mooney Summit II for the attendees to pick their brains, along with a cast of some of the most knowledgeable Mooney owners. The transfer of knowledge opportunity is unparalleled!

A couple of reservation spots opened up as a few had to cancel, so if any one else wants to join in, simply go to www.mooneysummit.com and sign up!

I look forward to seeing all of the attendee's in 2 weeks, sharing what you know, and learning what you don't know, and learning what you know to be true that isn't so!

Finally got the GDL 88 installed.  I have only 3 flights with it but have to say so far its doing the job as promised.  It truly surprised me how much traffic was actually around me that I would not have seen. The audible alert system volume needs to be tweaked but the 530 screen did change from the navigation page to the traffic screen when I was within 1 mile and + or - 200' of converging traffic.

I've had little experience with the weather portion of the system but I did notice the color intensity was different than what the Garmin 510 depicted with the GDL 39 antenna.  Need to spend some time setting all the parameters up on the next cross country.

Rick,

Does your GDL88 display both TIS-A and TIS-B traffic? One thing holding me off from installing a GDL88 is I was under the impression I would loose my existing TIS traffic and only pick up ADS-B compliant traffic. If you can let me know if that's the case, I'd appreciate it.

The book states TSIB provides the bridge between the current radar based ATC system and future ADSB based system. I do not see any reference to TSIA in the manual. Shoot me your email and I would be happy to copy pages from the manual. Garmin has a GDL 88 QnA guide on the website too.

The difference in the two versions of traffic is the base stations. TIS-A is radar based as it has been forever and TIS-B uses a fixed antenna making it faster because it doesn't have to wait for a dish to make a revolution. Both use the signal put out from transponders so every plane will show up on both.

Most of your digital transponders bromide TIS-A traffic and your ADS-B solutions such as the GDL88 provide TIS-B.
