DaV8or Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 So two things I want to fix right away on the F I'm buying is the lack of sholder belts and the door lock. Anybody have experience with the Alpha inertial seat belts? These seem pretty nice and easy to install. Alpha Belts Also any ideas on a quality door lock? As always, thanks for the help!
scottfromiowa Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 I found fixed shoulder belts a LOT less expensive...same with locks, that keep honest people honest...a pair of OEM locks and keys was about $60.00. Medco are tougher to duplicate, but if someone wants to break into your plane it would take about 30 seconds... I found the shoulder belts and hardware in MOA magazine...issues available online to find them.
OR75 Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 Any alternative to Alpha belts with ? Not sure I can justify what Alpha asks for the inertial belts.
DonMuncy Posted June 19, 2010 Report Posted June 19, 2010 Medeco locks have a very well deserved reputation. But you have to go back to the manufacturer for replacement keys. I have considered installing them, but then recall the few times in which I needed to have the avionics guy, the FBO, the local mechanic, etc. go by and do something with or in the plane. All these guys have a set of keys which will open your Mooney. When you balance that against the possibility that someone who REALLY wants to break into your plane may do a bunch of damage getting in despite your security precautions. I think a good argument can be made for living with the puny locks it comes with. Don

GeorgePerry Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 I've got a Mooney factory replacement set of locks with keys if your interested. They are new in the bag, never installed. Shoot me a PM

scottfromiowa Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 OEM Locks...2 for $65 Why does everyone want a self reeling (inertia) belt? A shoulder belt takes about 1 second to release if you need to lean around the cockpit...How much of that are people doing? The simplicity of a fixed belt...and reduced cost just seems like a no-brainer to me regarding an aircraft seat belt. The only time I release is when I switch tanks. I can reach to back seat and door lock with the belt on. Sell me on these re-reeling shoulder belts...

Qwalton Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 I personally have found inertia reel belts more annoying than helpful. I found that the lock on them was super sensitive and it would sometimes lock up when I was trying to just move around. The ones I was using (this was in a c-172) also wouldn't always unlock unless you took them off and fully retracted them. I have the fixed belts in my plane and like Scott I only have to release them when switching tanks. I also feel more secure being able to cinch the belt down rather than having to rely on the belt catching me.

scottfromiowa Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 Really, No worries in cars...I have a Mercedes Benz Don't retract well. I have a VW, Don't retract well, so I have NOT had your excellent experience with inertia reel belts...in automobiles for the added expense. I take NO OFFENSE to OLD school as simple is IS SIMPLE DOES... Enjoy your belts. To others, yes I too enjoy my Johnson bar and flaps...and belts too.
Kwixdraw Posted June 20, 2010 Report Posted June 20, 2010 The Medeco locks are pretty secure as long as the bad guy is not willing to jack up the door skins. Otherwise they will just jamb a screwdriver in the slot and twist the whole darned lock cylinder to get the tab out of the slot. I put them on mine to keep my ex-wife from letting non authorized people in the plane. They worked ok for that.
drpep Posted June 21, 2010 Report Posted June 21, 2010 I just installed Lasar shoulder harness non retractable belts, not only for the cost but to some degree from my past experience with inertia reels on my previously owned 76F. It took me about 9 hours to install largely because I did not want to make an amateur mistake with taking off the side panels and retrofitting the holding clamp around the vertical roll cage structure. The tolerances made it extremely difficult to get the clamp around the bar. In any event I also felt the inertia reels were too bulky given the space available in a Mooney
