orionflt Posted May 31, 2014 Report Posted May 31, 2014 I was delinquent today from Brett's picnic because I already committed to attending the community day at KDYL Doylestown Pa. When we arrived we heard that we had just missed some major excitement because the owner of a mooney that was parked on the ramp had just been taken away by the state police for violating a TFR on his way up from MD. The pilot was released a few hours later but I didn't get to talk to him at all, he is a regular at DYL and appearently makes that trip fairly often. His tail number is N6910U, I looked him up but he doesn't seem to be a Mooneyspace participant. I would love to get his first hand input on what happened, it was my understanding from pilots that were witness to the event that the police were curtious and professional thru the event but had to take him to be questioned by the FBI. Marauder Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Biden had a bunch of airspace tied up in Delaware as he attended the University of Delaware graduation ceremony. I'm willing to bet that was it. 1 Quote

Marauder Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Brian -- from the KILG airspace west, the airspace was under a TFR. Quote
DonMuncy Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 I hate to have to say it, but it seems that now days we probably ought to get a legal briefing for every flight. 2 Quote

N9453V Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Operating IFR would also have prevented this incursion. It's worth noting that for VPOTUS TFR's, IFR aircraft can arrive/depart the airports within the TFR. I arrived IFR at KILG during a VPOTUS TFR over the airport (Air Force 2 took off after I landed) and I was just asked to switch runways. 1 Quote
PTK Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 It is very difficult to bust a TFR in today's environment. The information is available everywhere. Even when getting a wx update flight service asks the pilot if is familiar with TFRs along the route. Unfortunately often times the temptation is to say "yes" just to get them off the radio. But pop-up TFRs do bite. Quote
carusoam Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Memory task... (Add to the checklist) Update your WingX or ForeFlight prior to departure. You get latest weather and TFRs for your route. It is a near complete way to stay current with enough detail. It requires a tablet type computer of your choice. The flight service phone call can't do enough for you. Next experiment: updating WingX while flying. At 5,000' and above how is your cell service? Best regards, -a- Quote
DAVIDWH Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Doesn't ForeFlight have big red TFR dots located on the map page of your flight route?  That said, the political bureaucratic bullys are getting worse every year. I assume he was led away in cuffs and leg chains  with assault rifles at the ready. Quote

Yes and with an ADS-B antennae on your app (regardless of whether it is ForeFlight or Garmin Pilot), you will get an updated TFR upload. This was one of the factors for me to go wih a portable solution. With Biden in my backyard, we see a fair number of his visits to the area and with the corresponding baby TFRs he has (3000 feet to surface) -- including the one for his house. Now if you want to understand craziness, how does a tiny TFR protect anything? This TFR was uploaded using the ADS-B antennae (look for the FIS-B data source on the label).
