gsxrpilot Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 Has anyone run an FS-450 on a carbureted engine such as the O-360 mounted on the front of my M20C? I think it would be a good little instrument to have but just wondering about the effectiveness or benefit on a carbureted engine. Thanks, Paul Quote
orionflt Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I just installed the MVP-50 in my C and one of the things i love about it is the ability to monitor my fuel flow. in fact before i decided on a complete engine monitoring system I was looking for a fuel flow system, I feel knowing your fuel burn is a great enhancement. carusoam Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 Everyone will benefit from having reliable FF data... Check with your mechanic or the manufacturer to determine the right one for you. I'm not aware of carbureted engines being any different from a raw fuel flow point of view. Installation details are critical to allow for straight runs in and out of the sensor. Flow Sensors hate sharp curves... Best regards, -a- Quote
piperpainter Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I have one and I absolutley love it! It's one of the best investments I've made. I have it tied to the GPS too so it gives me great info. Remember that chief aircraft doesn't have taxes! Quote
Hector Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I had it in my C before I replaced it with a complete engine monitor with fuel flow. There is a setting in the FS-450 specifically for carbureted engines as I recall. Also bear in mind that the fuel flow may bounce around a little in a carb engine but not too bad. It always predicted fuel remaining to within one gallon even after 4 hours of flight. I also had it connected to the GPS for even more utility. WELL WORTH THE SMALL INVESTMENT. flyboy Posted March 12, 2014 Report Posted March 12, 2014 I have one in my B model. I loved it until my last cross country. The flow rate is now all over the place, from 0.7 gallons an hour to 24.9 gallons an hour at full throttle. Quote

I unplugged the connector on the back of the unit, cleaned it, plugged it back in and good as new. Could also be your fuel flow sensor, but less likely unless it is really old I think. AmigOne Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 Good info about the experience with cleaning the connector, my 450 is not that bad but I did notice a greater fluctuation on gph lately. Checked the rate adjustment and it was set at 4 so no further adjustment possible there. Other than that and tied to my GPS is an instrument that contributes greatly to flight safety. Quote
