  1. I had the same problem on # 2 and 4 cylinders this month. I pulled cylinders off and found carbon buildup and stuck compression rings caused by excessive oil ring gap. Pulled # 1 Cylinder off last year, had broken oil ring. My engine has about 450 hours on it now. Don't think the person that originally did my cylinders when they overhauled my engine checked the ring end gaps. I took the cylinders to Corona Aircraft Engines at the Corona Airport (KAJO) for hone and install new rings. Cost was about $200.00 per cyl for the hone and re ring including gaskets. They did the work while I waited and watched. I'm happy with the work they did.
  2. I installed Goodyear flight custom II's in 2011. Have over 600 landings on them and there still good.
  3. Normally I just pull the power to idle downwind abeam the numbers, with gear down add full flaps. Sometimes I have to add a little power on final if speed is lower than 80mph.
  4. Hesperia (L26) has a great restaurant. Foxy's Landing in Palmdale (KWJF) is also good.
  5. How about Jean NV (0L7). Buffet at Gold Strike.
  6. I fly into Vegas all the time. Plan the fly in I will come.
  7. Boshart aviation does excellent work. They are at the Genesee county airport in Batavia NY.
  8. I went with the Concord sealed 3yrs ago and have not had any starting problems. No more acid in the battery box.
  9. I have the Garmin GMA-350. You can set it up to mute the music in the pilot headset during ATC conversations but copilot will hear music without muting. You can also have three different music inputs so pilot, co-pilot and passengers can all listen to their own different music at the same time or in any combination. Also the pilot can talk on com1 while the co-pilot talks on com2 at the same time. Also with the 3D audio the sound comes in the direction of the source. IE, co-pilot in right ear, passengers in rear.
  10. I'm Coming! Where is everyone meeting? and what time?
  11. Where on the airport is everyone parking?
  12. I'm interested in going.
  13. My route of flight from Genesee County airport in NY(KGVQ) to Apple Valley CA (KAPV). KGVQ-BUF-V14-DJB-VWV-OXI-stop for fuel at KIKK-V144-V10-V502-V4-TOP-stop for fuel at 47K-HUT-V234-V190-FTI-stop for fuel at KAEG-ZUN-V12-V442-HEC-KAPV.
  14. No wind speed is 150kts. Westbound with a headwind usually 16 hours flight time. Eastbound with a tailwind 14 hours. If I leave at 5:00am I can usually arrive by 9:00pm with the time change, and three stops for fuel. Unless the weather gets bad. Last year when I flew from Rochester NY to Southern California in December It took me two days to make the trip. 14 out of the 16 hours flying was solid IFR (in the clouds). Started picking up rime ice south of Flagstaff AZ and had to land in Prescott AZ for the night. Was not a fun trip, don't have an autopilot.
  15. I fly twice a year from Rochester NY to Southern California in my "B" model. I fly the airways. Westbound I fly 10,500, eastbound 9,500. Sometimes I have to climb to 12,000 when I get into NM to get into smoother air. You should have no problem in your J. If you would like more information on my route and or fuel stops let me know.
  16. I just punch a hole in the top of the filter and run compressed air into the hole. It pushes all the oil out of the filter. Then you can just take the filter off without having to worry about trying to catch oil dripping or coming out of the filter.
  17. I would recommend Boshart Aviation in Batavia NY. Reasonable and do very good work.
  18. The yellow arc on the B models is 150mph. I'm in the yellow arc cruising. Any power setting above 15in and I'm going to be well into the yellow arc in a descent. I just stay under 186mph. Vne is 186mph or about 162kts indicated in the B model.
  19. I don't know how you guys stay out of the yellow arc when descending. I'm in the yellow arc when in cruise.
  20. I installed the Tempest UREM-37BYs and found they are much better than the standard massive plugs. I think the extended tip keeps the electrode on the bottom plugs further from the oil and are much more resistant to fouling. On the standard massive plugs, the piston pushes any oil on the bottom of the cylinder right into the electrode of the plug. On the BY plugs the extended tip keeps the electrode higher up from the bottom or further into the cylinder. Anyway, my engine runs better and does not foul out when I do a mag check during the run up. Plus they are a lot cheaper that the fine wire plugs.
  21. Lancair Evolution, MD-500E helicopter, Embraer Phenom 300, Citation X+, and a Sukhoi SU-27 Flanker. Might need more than a little lottery for all of the above.
  22. Battery prices have gone up lately. Just bought a battery for my Honda Civic and it was over $100.00 dollars.
  23. Has anyone compared the Tempest fine wire UREM-38s to the Tempest extended tip massive UREM-37BY. Big difference in price. $72 for the 38S and $23 for the 37BY. Thinking about replacing plugs in my O-360A1D. It has the Tempest UREM-40E now. Don't know if the fine wire plugs are worth the extra money over the 37BYs.
  24. I think if you have an airplane in a hangar, what does it matter what else you have in the hangar? I don't think the government should have anything to do with what people have in hangars. When I take my airplane out of the hangar to fly someplace I put my car in the hangar until I get back.
