  1. Had an altercation with the ushers today. I flew the Rocket in. It had rained all morning and was raining when I landed. I was told beforehand by two separate individuals to request "Heavy Aircraft Parking." The usher saw my sign and shrugged and asked me to explain. I'm yelling out the window that the airplane has a larger prop and a heavier engine and I cannot park on grass. He doubles down and say "we have it, but not for a Mooney." I saluted him through the open window and followed the ATV to parking where they told me to park on grass. I shut down and refused. They take a few minutes, figure things out and found a paved spot for me. As I was walking back to my plane I stopped and spoke with some of the ushers and asked how I could prevent the disagreement arriving in the future. The old guy in his EAA hat argues with me about how it wouldn't happen in a Mooney and I wouldn't be at risk of a prop strike, so on and soforth. I dropped the discussion and figured I'd just fly the other plane out there if I came back.
  2. So now if you don't have ADS-B out and you want to fly into areas that require it, you can make a phone call prior-to, as if you're flying a J3 from your farm to some airport outside of Dallas for BBQ?
  3. Get some Apex screwdriver bits for aviation (better fit for screws, less chance of damaging a screw) and one of these. Absolutely the best tool for hand removal of screws that are above you: https://www.amazon.com/CRAFTSMAN-948025-Pieces-T-Handle-Driver/dp/B00QB80UH8
  4. You have to make a quick turn at the end of runway 22 at KTPF.
  5. Any tricks to keeping your hotspot online? Never considered Google Fi, but that might be a better solution as the bandwidth from Hologram kindof sucks.
  6. Why the fuck should we care that it's a woman, or a black, or gay? What does this trifecta of identity politics have to do with Lori's ability to effectively govern the city? It pisses me off that the headlines include the exact things it is illegal to ask or discriminate against, as if it should matter or is newsworthy. With that said, it would be awesome if Lori would reopen Meigs.
  7. Looks like it’s got an ESP8266 attached. Another alternative would be a raspberry pi, a relay board and a USB modem from hologram.io. You can buy their global SIM cards too; their service is a bit cheaper than tmobile and includes data if you want to take pictures inside your hangar, monitor temperature, moisture, etc. realistically the cost would be about the same as the previously described solution, but if you’re technical, it might add some value.
  8. Paging @cujet
  9. Could be the way the IA is doing the compression test. Is it the same mechanic?
  10. I just bought a golf cart off of Craigslist for $1400 and will pick up a universal towbar for another $140 and that'll be my tug and airport transport.
  11. I pulled the hubcaps off of my rocket to make it easier to check tire pressure and refill tires. I don't see how hubcaps could make any difference when the gear is retracted. Doesn't the Encore have a 3rd gear door on each side to completely close off the gear?
  12. From the Rocket manual, but relevant to TIT gauges I believe on any turbocharged piston aircraft and possibly a cause of early mortality and the failures associated with LOP operations.
  13. Is there a procedure for the Bravo for calibrating the TIT gauge? The Rocket manual spells out that TIT gauges are notoriously inaccurate and has a specific calibration procedure to ensure you’re not overtemping the turbocharger.
  14. I'm on the west coast in St. Pete and am in and out of PBI/FLL/BCT quite regularly.
  15. That's an excellent deal. I put around 1100 hours on my M20F over six years. If I figure $50/hr for fuel, $40/hr for storage (hangars cost $6600/yr here), another $30/hr for the engine R&R, $17 for misc maintenance and annuals over the years and $8/hr for insurance, my M20F cost me $145/hr to own and operate. Add in the purchase price, which I'd get back out and I'd be at about what the original poster is charging for rent. Ownership gives me the ability to walk down to the airport and take it up whenever I want. Make sure that when you're training that you teach the fingernail check to ensure the Johnson bar is secure for gear down, and to give it a twist at the bottom to ensure it's up. Having the bar come detached and drop the gear in flight can get the pilot's attention, especially if they're engaged in mile high activities and sitting between the seats.
  16. The biggest factor for landing distance, and factors more than weight or approach speed (within reason) is idle speed. When I first got my new engine on my M20F, the idle crept up to around 850 RPM when the engine was warm and I'd use up 2000ft of runway easily to land. I had my IA turn it down to where it'd just barely run and I can be landed and stopped in the M20F well before the 1000ft mark (and I'd say maybe within 500ft at times). 1.2 Vso should be your speed on short final and 1.3 on final.
  17. Congrats. Looked up your plane on flightaware. She was moving for being down low, that's for sure. One thing that caught my attention is that the altitude seemed to always be reported about 200-300ft above a VFR or IFR altitude and I'm curious if the blind encoder or altimeter may need calibrating.
  18. I purchased a yellowtagged bulkhead from an MSC for $500 that they'd done. It cracked at the weld on the flight home. Nobody returned my calls and the part was clearly warped when they repaired it.
  19. I just stumbled onto this post from 9 months before I took delivery of my m20f and four four years before the engine quit at 200ft. The strategy I had planned months before buying the airplane worked out for me when I had to put it down.
  20. I've got some bad news for you. After over 100 hours on my engine, I still get the same behavior from my EDM-900. When I had the engine monitor installed in the Rocket, I had it installed in front of me so I wouldn't have to deal with the red LED if there were something that would touch a limit for an instant. I believe the "red light" issue creates a real hazard. You must either verify and clear the indication during critical phases of flight, or becoming complacent with a blinking red light that frequently cries wolf. With the engine monitor installed close enough to not need the asshole light, it's much more tolerable. Indications just turn red and are not intrusive like a blinking red light that says "ENGINE", you can glance down and be aware of them and go on about your business. Added bonus is your passengers don't get nearly as alarmed either.
  21. I started on a project to design my own scooter parts. Ended up discovering that I can get my Rocket into the hangar if I taxi up to the other side of the taxiway and get a running start with the towbar since the middle of the taxiway is a little bit lower. The inertia of the plane, even moving slowly and with 105 gallons of fuel onboard, is usually enough to roll it over the tracks. More critical than weight is to make sure the tires are properly inflated.
  22. So many details. How is scoring performed? Aircraft classes?
  23. Your leaders know what's best for you. I can't help but think that this effort sounds good in that people can request their online records destroyed and deleted, but it's the actions of many European governments, in living memory, that have erased all history of individuals existence after exterminating them.
  24. I don't have any experience getting upholstery work done on my airplane, but @kortopates has a good point. Your ass is going to be spending a lot of time in that seat. I'm pretty cheap, but the years have taught me that the amortized cost of comfort is generally an excellent investment in well-being and in health. Discomfort in the most natural of positions often means that you shift your position to less natural positions and put unnatural stresses on other parts of your body. Lower back injuries are often caused by sitting for extended periods of time.
