  1. Hitting a decent bump at any amount of speed in a Mooney it is going to bounce hard and potentially porpoise. I have done some gravel roads and fields in WY/ND and it isn't really comparable to landing at a nice grass glider strip. It sounds like your mind is made up but Mooney's aren't the best option for unimproved surfaces in my opinion.
  2. He is a cheesehead so definitely not really smart....
  3. 2 airports
  4. Lots of cabins to rent and a couple of hotels in the town. It isn't as upscale as Mackinac but I enjoy it. Good food, nice bars, and the stars are spectacular.
  5. Probably a true statement it isn't relevant though. Frost causes almost no loss of speed and is more deadly than ice. The loss of speed is a symptom but it isn't what kills you, loss of lift is.
  6. The high wing loading and laminar flow makes a Mooney wing a lot less suitable for ice accumulation than a big fat winged Piper. The speed loss is reflective of drag and noticeable. What isn't always very reflective with ice is the loss of lift and increase in stall speed. To look at it another way a thin layer of frost on the wing can cause you to crash. It isn't drag or weight related. It is the airflow disruption causing enough loss of lift that the plane won't fly.
  7. I am a Beaver Island (KSJX) fan myself.
  8. http://www.caribbeanflyingadventures.com/ Much better and Jim will answer just about any question you have. Fuel prices are updated regularly along with details of how you get in/out of each of the islands.
  9. I would think utilizing a GUMPS checklist sans the radio would be just as good and wouldn't clutter the frequency.
  10. I the relocated oil cooler on my F and don't really notice any real substantive change winter to summer at 1000' MSL or 25000' MSL. The key as others have pointed out is getting the oil hot in the first place, that is where real issue is. Multi-grade plus Reif Turbo XP is my recipe for winter flying.
  11. His gas is also cheaper, other costs; well who wants to count those.
  12. Details from the peanut gallery. http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/590429-swiss-lx40-zrh-lax-diversion-iqaluit.html
  13. The width isn't a problem but sitting L-Shaped versus bent knee like you would in other models I find to be uncomfortable after about 2hrs.
  14. Most expensive year @$25k, least expensive @$1000. The cost of operation is very inexpensive, until it isn't. Just expect a $25-30k year at some point and you will be fine Personally I wouldn't long term operate a Mooney out of a grass strip. Low prop clearance, low gear doors, hard on pucks, causes tank epoxy to warp and crack. Solely my opinion. Everyone else will be along to tell you the Mooney is the best back country flyer there is. I would be looking at a 182.
  15. Though if you "accidentally" forget to stow it, it does provide really good air flow. Not that I would encourage disregarding manufacturers guidance....
  16. I really wanted a Comanche when I was out looking but the initial purchase price is much more than an F and the loss of the tool/dies in the flood worried me. I really do like the Comanche product.
  17. Like the Piper baggage door a lot more.
  18. 67 was last year for flushed rivets, manual gear, and hydraulic flaps. The flushed riveting came back later but last year for gear/flaps which were desirable for me.
  19. I only bad landings with witnesses.
  20. Put on a Reif Turbo heater setup, solves a lot of issues. Cold starting being one of them.
  21. The week of 9/11 we had a pair drop a boom out of ORD that shook the building pretty good. Memories of ND in the 70's everything boomed up there, as long as there were no bright flashes we didn't duck and cover.
  22. Basically my method and works 99.9% of the time. When it doesn't you either have too much or too little fuel and just need to figure out which. End of the day when in doubt flood it and do the two handed dance.
  23. I can see landing on a taxiway to some extent. Flying directly at and landing over a jet in a Husky which moves at the pace of a snail is a bit of a head scratcher.
  24. What is the AD requiring the fuel hoses to be replaced every 5yrs, not familiar with that.
  25. ROP/LOP, real men just fly PEAK!
