  1. Always a good idea to get a second set of eyes on a pre-buy. Even an experienced IA can miss an issue, although in this case I'm sure it wouldn't be anything serious.
  2. Pictreed, I was at Ezell aviation in Breckenridge yesterday and he had a KX-155 sitting on a shelf. When I had my gyro overhauled he let me use a spare he had on the shelf. No charge.
  3. I suspect I know what happened.....they said 45 hours to repair and you heard 4 to 5 hours. They thought they did good by completing the job in 35 hours. I'm pretty sure Maxwell charges $700 a tank for leak only repairs....no warranty.
  4. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DB4OL6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Ordered and made my own. Took a couple of minutes. Traced with a safety razor and snapped the edges. Looks and works great. I've got nine sheets left if someone needs some.
  5. http://www.avweb.com/news/aeromed/186016-1.html?redirected=1 A good article from Mike Busch on CO detectors and comparisons between different types. Copied from a previous post by Chrisk.
  6. I purchased the standard Sensorcon. It does suggest a 6 month calibration as would any high end detector. The video is impressive, they drop it down a stairwell from at least 2 flights up, submerge in water, ect. You can purchase the pro for an extra $40 and program your own alarm set points. We need to know if we've got CO in the cabin.
  7. It's been a while since this topic was discussed. I found these detectors which appear to very nice for the price of $119. Price drops to $99 for all the CB club members for orders of at least five and drops even more for quantities at +5. http://sensorcon.com/collections/carbon-monoxide-detectors/products/portable-carbon-monoxide-detector-meter?variant=4193480964 The only comparable option I could find are the CO Experts available on aeromedix for twice the price at $199. https://www.aeromedix.com/ultra-low-level-carbon-monoxide-detector-co-experts-2016 Other recommendations?
  8. Wow! That's a flight school putting their money where their mouth is. Walk the walk!
  9. You're one day younger than my son. He's also right at 100 hours in the log book. A little advice to counter what others may be giving you....rarely does it do any good to be condescending or rude to those you're doing business with. If you can't agree on conditions or terms, walk away....politely. If you can spare the time and your A&P doesn't mind, ask if you can help. You'll learn to appreciate the work and knowledge your A&P brings to the table. You'll also have pride in doing some of the work yourself. I've gotten to the point where I enjoy working on my "C" as much as I do flying it. I had my son attend Maxwell's maintenance seminar as a condition of him flying the Mooney.
  10. Boy that brings back memories. We had a principle when I was in junior high that had holes drilled in the board. He'd make 'ya lean over his desk, rub the board on your butt, rare back and swing...but stop just before contact. After you quit flinching he'd let 'er rip. I'm not sure it help stop the behavior though....I seemed to remember visiting his office on many occasions.
  11. Agree....I've tested a few controllers patience in my time and thought he was very professional.
  12. And I was expecting a photo of a C130.......
  13. It's amazing how quickly an IO-360 will start when the mag is timed properly to the engine. Thanks again to everyone that responded.....and to Aaron at Aircraft Select for having patience with me and helping me figure out a red dot does not equate to a red tooth.
  14. I think that's part of the problem.....it affected us and we don't realize it.......or perhaps it was running behind the mosquito fogging trucks.....or maybe drinking from the water hose in the backyard.....falling off my bicycle and not having a helmet on......the list goes on and on.....
  15. I think I hear an echo.....
  16. So we think we've solved the problem. I'll attach pics so if anyone else runs into this, you'll have a reference. #1 Cylinder with the piston at the top of the compression stroke. It'll look the same if your on the exhaust stroke so you need to feel for pressure. Pic showing TC mark splitting case line...maybe not perfect but I wasn't setting the timing. You have to zoom in to see the mark. Window in the middle of the mag. You can see the start of the "L" in the center. "K" is just to the right. This is a shot of the left side window of the mag and where we think the problem lies. If you zoom in, you'll be able to see a red dot on the backside of the tooth. That dot should be 180 degrees and is NOT the red tooth that's supposed to be in the window. Courtesy of Aaron at Select Aircraft, this is the red tooth you should see. Soon as I get a chance I'll try to fix the problem and report back. If you get a mag returned and it's just a red dot in the side window your firing order will not be correct.....at least I'm hoping this will solve it. Thanks to all who replied!!!
  17. So here's my take on this handout.....I own an airplane.....I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination.....but I own an airplane. It's as luxury an item, I suppose, as a person could have. I'll have three kids in college in September, a wife who just retired from teaching after 29 years, and lost two partners on the plane within the last six months. But....I own an airplane. If our government sees fit to give aid to a group of people, and I'm as conservative as they come, I'm not sure airplane owners fit the bill. Now, just as soon as they raise the handout to $1000....I'm all over it!!
  18. With the upper plug removed on #1 and the piston at TDC the mark on the flywheel splits the case line at the top of the engine. I can reverse the prop (clockwise 1/2 turn) then when pulling back through, right at or just after the TDC mark on the flywheel, the inpulse coupling snaps and I get fire at the #2 cylinder. On both top and bottom plugs which tells me both mags are working. The mag is installed with the manufacturers plate on top, just as it was pulled. Aaron asked about that. The "K" is just off center at 25 degrees before TDC with the "L" more prominent in the window than the "R". Aaron also said this is how it should look as the left mag fires first. Red tooth visible in the left side plug hole at 25 degrees before TDC. The only issue I'm not fairly certain of is the cap wiring form the distributor to the mag. Aaron did say this could cause problems, but not what I'm seeing. Is it possible for the mag itself to be reversed? With the #2 cylinder firing in place of the #1 it would seem I'm off 180 degrees with a firing order of 1,3,2 and 4. I'll take pics tomorrow.
  19. That's the first thing we checked. I even checked with a flashlight to make sure I could see the piston coming up in the cylinder. Pulled the top and side plugs on the mag. The "K" is just off center with the "L" more prominent than the "R". Red tooth on the mag is visible in the left side plug. Right side is difficult to get too. My IA is stumped. Got a hold of Aaron at Aircraft Select and he basically said the same thing. We have to be on the exhaust stroke. On the exhaust stroke the piston would be at the bottom of the cylinder. The piston is coming up in the cylinder and right at TDC or just a hair past the inpulse coupling snaps and I get fire on the #2 cylinder. Left front cylinder. Unless I'm losing my mind....which is possible. Rotating the prop counter-clock wise if facing the prop looking towards the plane. I'm timing based on the marks on the flywheel being centered with the split in the case at the top of the engine.
  20. We finally finished the annual and attempted to start the engine. No joy. Figured out the #2 cylinder is firing just after TDC. Everything is timed properly. The only issue I can think of that would cause this would be the distributor cap wires are backwards. I didn't send in the cap when I had the mag overhauled. When we were putting it back together it was really difficult to get a hand in to attach the cap wires to the mags. Would this cause the problem? Tried calling Aaron at Aircraft Select but couldn't get a hold of him. It's the dual mag. Thanks!!
  21. As a card carrying member of the CB procrastinators club I'm holding out for $1000 rebate. Typical government program......
  22. I can do better than locking keys in the car....so I'm getting ready for work and can't find my wallet. Have to have the wallet because it has my pass for work that I need to get in a secure door. Remembered I had changed clothes at the airport Saturday because I had attended a funeral and instead driving back home I took extra clothes to change into. Left my wallet sitting on the wing. Then I start looking for my keys....remember I had let someone from church use my keys and left them sitting in the office. It's 10:00 at night, I have to have both so I tell my wife I've got to run to town. Of course I live 15 miles west of the church and about 20 from the airport. Over an hour later I'm back home......it's tough getting old......
  23. Welcome.....I couldn't help but notice the upper portion of your verticle stabilizer. You've got an Aerostar. They actually owned Mooney Corp for a year or so. Rare bird.....and nice looking!
  24. I had the same partner on 3 different planes and we never once had a cross word about the partnership.....it's all about communication and expectations being clear....and realizing nobody is perfect. Our setup.... All fixed expenses were split. Initial money down, loan, insurance, hanger rent, and a reasonable fund for annuals. Then we paid a set amount for each hour flown which went into a kitty to pay for an overhaul and unexpected expenses.....which really are expected.....it's a matter of when, not if. When you flew the plane, it was refueled, all personal items removed, leading edges and windshield cleaned. Notepad logging hours and any squawks or concerns, kept in the same spot and reviewed before each flight. It worked for us.
  25. XM is not altitude dependent. I see your based in Florida so you should have good coverage with the ADS-B. If you choose to travel West be aware there are locations that ADS-B doesn't have cover yet....but not much.
