  1. I'll leave it at 5 or 6 for short flights. Long flights 3 hours + I'll put it at 7.
  2. Good PPI looking for air frame corrosion and go. Fly it VFR get your IR ticket in it. Hand flying and using VORs is a go god way to get your IR ticket. Afterwards light IMC flying going up or down though a layer to get where you are going this would be a good platform. Decision time comes a few years form now: find a model that has GPS and AP or upgrade this one some lower cost options might be available at that time.
  3. Fiberglass boats float.
  4. http://migration.cirruspilots.org/ Check this out for the Cirrus Migration I was halfway thinking about going for a day just to see what they do but I don't think so. @mike_elliott Mike you and the others do a wonderful job keeping the Mooney Summit working on Donations. Thanks very much. I do have to admit I prefer the beach venue over an inland venue. However, if we ever wanted to come to New Orleans for the summit I would be willing to assist.
  5. The maintenance manual should have a brief explanation of sealing the windshield during replacement this should work. A little more information will help. Model and year of your plane? Photo of the suspected area? is it rain water on the ground and or the air? do you have the stock 2 piece windshield do you have the 201 windshield? do you have a 1 piece stock windshield? You could be getting water from the avionics access panels?
  6. I'm not sure which is in mine but i do know the plane power regulators are adjustable.
  7. Changing your battery will not do anything. You can check your alternator belt to make sure it is tight enough a slipping belt could cause lower volts and wear you belt out faster. You can adjust the voltage regulator to get it closer to 14.0V. I typically see 13.7 to 14.1 volts on mine generally after running for 15 to 20 minutes it will settle down at 13.9 to 14V.
  8. This past Tuesday I was flying a friend who is interested in learning to fly and I was conducting an unofficial first flying lesson. We were maneuvering in a pretty isolated space at the edge of the Bravo when I spotted incoming traffic on my IFLY 740 with ADSB in. He was about 4 miles with no altitude reported 143kts pretty much coming in from my 0900. I continued at my altitude and heading to keep him approaching me at 90 degrees and increased throttle to ensure he would pass behind me. I was at about 2500 and he was cruising along about 1500 and passed about a mile behind me. We will never know if he saw me or not. Without ADSB it probably would have not been an issue but ADSB allowed me to know he was there and look for him. I was not talking to ATC at the time and maybe if they were not too busy they could have called him out as well. I don't like the way ADSB out tattles on you but I do like the traffic and weather in. Keep your eyes peeled out there and use all the tools you have at your disposal.
  9. Sounds lie we need to convince some aerodynamic engineer working on his doctorate degree to take this on as his thesis and once and for all using computer simulations, wind tunnels and math to prove which is more efficient. However, we all know the real answer already and that is the Mooney design is more efficient and better.
  10. Cute exhibition. Although it would be a little more difficult on our planes hanging under the wing. Besides those old planes had all those wires to hang on to while you are out there walking on the wings. Oh she didn't have a parachute either. @M20Doc Do you offer in flight maintenance services? Might be a new business opportunity.
  11. Year ago I thought I saw where somebody had this for a plane even came as a set of 3 but I couldn't tell you when or where I saw it.
  12. arghhh you'll walk the plank and be keel hauled for that.
  13. No they stripped everything and repainted the whole plane
  14. Yeah I bet he passes through 90IAS pretty quick so moving the Johnson bar in the F22 has to be a beast if you don't get the gear up quick. Nah they will promote him to full colonel that way he won't be flying and wont hurt any more planes. Sad to see and unfortunately it can happen to any of us.
  15. OK I'm reviving this thread. just out of curiosity I just watched a highly sped up time lapse sequence of an Emirates passenger jet 737 or similar get repainted. They stripped the plane cleaned it and repainted it. I never saw the control surfaces removed for balancing?? Is this a Mooney thing? (FAA regs I believe call for this) Do they do it another way on the plane that was not show? Is the ratio of the mass of the control surface to the mass of the paint so much greater on a 737 that it is negligible and does not need to be considered? Did I just miss the step due to the time lapse or camera angles? Emirates doesn't need to comply with FAA regs (they fly outside US airspace) and it is not required over there?
  16. Sounds like a good deal if it is close and depending on how much the others fly it for weekend trips. $7.5k buy in and $135 a month is cheaper than going it alone. Just be ready to contribute up to another $7.5k for the engine overhaul. If you can walk away from the $7.5k without any serious hardship I'd go for it. Finally I'd push for them to upgrade to the Avidyne IFD440 and get rid of the Garmin you will all like it better especially using an Ipad and the IFD100 software and divided 4 ways it is not a huge hit for each owner. Also don't forget you get to sell the Garmin 430 after as well.
  17. Fly higher and faster. Yes this does pose a problem I think some have opted for sheep skin covers or other things like it. I just deal with it and fly 10 or 11 thousand for a cool flight.
  18. Brain We need pics of you panel to help you spend money recklessly. I mean wisely. If you want GPS box and stay away from Garmin Avidyne is your friend. I like my IFD540 with the APX322 remote mounted transponder. It takes care of ADSB out and is controlled from the 540. I do like having a separate transponder with it's own interface but panel space made this decision for me. As for engine monitors there are several available just depends on what panel space and wallet capacity you have for them.
  19. Just make sure the zeros are on the right side of the decimal point. Otherwise she will catch on to what you are dong.
  20. Ok So you are flying to an airport and you have accepted the published prices for fuel and tie down. Tie down $20 / night SS fuel $5.20 - $166.40 tie down $80 total $246.4 FS fuel $7.16 - $229.12 tie down $60 total $289.12 The difference is $42 At what point do you get FS over SS fuel. $20 - $30 $30 - $40 $40 - $50 Over $50 You need 32 gallons and you are staying 3 to 4 nights one night waived with FS fuel but not necessarily with SS fuel.
  21. OK Should be just before the PC system in section 6 of the manual. Look for the schematic breakdown of the hydraulic pump.
  22. Good looking E model congrats and like others have siad get you PPL. Get you E airworthy with basic avionics necessary and finish your PPL in the E model very doable and you will get to know the plane very well. Then you can start looking at modifications and improvements to your E. My first plane was a 64 E great planes and it was just 2 planes after yours, N6943U, SN 313, so just guessing your SN should be 311? Unfortunately my E was flooded in a hurricane and the insurance company totaled it. I don't have to tell you order of importance but here it is anyway. JMHO 1. airframe 2. power plant 3. upgrade avionics 4. cosmetics
  23. Yeah if they are that quick adjust them slower. They will go up quicker in flight with the wind loads. When going around it feels like you just pulled a rug out from under you when the flaps come up quickly.
  24. @pilot_jb First when on the ground with the flaps fully extended and you release them how long does it take for the flaps to retract? It should be about 8-12 seconds per Manual 104. If the flaps retract too fast there is an adjustment on the hydraulic pump for the flaps and the procedure is outlined in the maintenance manual. See Manual 104 pages 6-14 & 6-15. If adjusted for about 10 seconds a quick up and down motion of the release handle when flying will retract about 5 to 10 degrees of flaps.
  25. Yes get it cleaned out. While some may think it a waste of time at every annual all wing inspection covers are removed (4 to 6 hours to R&R) and I clean inside each bay to the best of my ability before applying corrosion X. The first few years are really dirty but it gets less and less over time. Sometimes I feel like a proctologists on an elephant reaching deep inside the wings as far as I can.
