  1. i would start by trying to identify where is the oil leaking from before considering installing one. plenty of threads on where the oil that end up on the gear doors can come from. my view is that mooney's engine compartment is crowded enough that if you don't need to have an accessory in there, don't install it.
  2. i believe the MP hose is missing in Jetdriven list. it is an MS28741-3-0174 the last 4 digits is the length of the hose ( 0174 is 17 inches and 4/8) normally, hoses would have a ring with an engraving with the reference. the reference coding varies from manufacturer to manufacturer but are easy to decode for any hose maker you will call. you can choose rubber or teflon hoses. also steel brading or polyester anti chaffing the oil cooler have fire sleeve. make sure you torque them correctly. it is easy to do.
  3. it means no BFR but you still have to fly with an instructor for 3 hours. It is instruction instead of a review
  4. my understanding is that it does 2 things: 1) gets you brownie points with the FAA. In case something happen to you, your file will show that you care about safety. 2) if you have enough credits, you can replace the BFR by 3 hours of flight instructions. The nuance here is that you cannot fail: you are getting 3 hours of instructions, you are not being tested. Personally, I believe this is a very weak incentive. I go to those seminars when the topic interests me.
  5. I like Foreflight I just wish it was compatible with devices other than the Stratus. One product and a single distribution point is not a good long term strategy in a free market IMHO.
  6. I believe we have the same 77J model and I never saw any snaps on the floor. My carpet, installed a few year back with a new interior simply lays flat (it is not glued or cemented) but does not pull or folds
  7. For a very simple reason: the "command" (and liability) would have shifted to the controller. The result could have been a happy one. If not, some would have reported that a controller send a pilot to the ground. Sad, but that's the world we live in. A few want to cash in, but most end up paying.
  8. not sure any "never again" story would be really Mooney specific
  9. only from statistics (not pointing to anyone's landings technique or ability) ... the nose tire requires less frequent changing for flat spots than the mains. I would chose the highest quality tire in the nose.
  10. fwiw, i did bleed my brakes this afternoon. used a plastic syringe fitted with a 1/4 in OD clear vinyl tubing. you may need to use a step down larger clear vinyl tube if the syringe is large (helps not to have to refill it too many times). cost of syringe was 1.50 at tap plastics. vinyl was 12 cents a foot. i removed the brake fluid can and adapted a clear vinyl tubing to an overflow beaker. open the bleed valve several turns and push fluid up slowly. if the 5606 does not move, you need to go inside the plane and move the brake pedals by hand is fine. repeat until there are no more air bubbles going through the tubing into the beaker. close the bleeding valve. change wheel. repeat above. the brakes work great. it is a messy job, so dress accordingly.
  11. does not male sense completely. ADS-B does require a WAAS GPS positioning. why bother with altimeters and encoders ?
  12. Question: if one chose to have the UAT (978MHz) ADS-B out as a way to comply rather than the mode S, will he have to keep the current Mode C transponder ? To be clear, I am wondering whether in some cases the need for so called Pitot-Static check can be gone
  13. just wondering what extended range fuel tank options do you have.
  14. the A&P needs to speak up.... What AD is he talking about ?
  15. You are unlikely to find a snowed runway in the bay area so, you may want to leave those skis behing. Most airports in the area are friendly and will have a rental car facility. The city is not very car friendly to say the least (you will spend most of your time trying to find an expensive parking space) so ... if you want to visit the city, fly to SQL, CCR or OAK and call the FBO to make sure you get a lift to and from a Bart station if you want to visit the area, just rent a car (no public transport) Lots of small airports in the area from where you can walk to a worth seeing place Columbia (O22) .... gold rush town Half Moon bay (HAF) ocean side Mariposa Yosemite (MPI) Yosemite park - car rental available South lake Tahoe (TVL) bicycle or short taxi ride to the lake just to name a few, many more on your way from OR to SoCal along the coast or inland. fly safe.
  16. i am wondering how that SI about the RAM air came up. Did you bring it up ? if you did not, then i wonder how competent or knowledgeable your mechanic is. I am sure he must be a great guy !
  17. 5m most of the time, 50m occasionally without an external antenna is what I get when the ipad is on the yoke, passenger seat or even the floor of the passenger seat. I use the ipad for overall situational awareness and infomation (airspace, airports info, etc ...). I do not rely on it for an ILS. Not sure how many satellites the ipad monitors. I doubt it monitors more than a handfull. If it did the battery will drain very quick. (the GNS430 monitors 12). no RAIM either.
  18. i actually found the ipad internal gps to be very reliable.
  19. what do you mean by putting the tail on the ground ? does it really make a difference in containers levels ?
  20. on a J, if you are at idle and the gear is not down, the buzzer will be loud and will get your attention. it is an airworthiness item.
  21. most journalists are incompetent in reporting or under tremendous time pressure to write. i bet most of them do not even read what they wrote before sending.
  22. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2013/01/12/small-plane-lands-with-gear-up-at-san-carlos-airport/ fortunately, no one was hurt.
  23. i think there are a few questions embedded in your question: 1) wifi only or wifi+gps+3G you want to take the gps+3G version so you can use the internal gps. you do NOT have to subscribe to the 3g service ( i don't) , just make sure you update charts and weather etc... when you are home or when you have free wifi service. the internal ipad gps works great and you do not need any external gps. 2) size "classic" vs. min ipad. i personally prefer the classic size. it does indeed barely fit between the 2 ears of the mooney yoke. and it is probably more difficult to position. but it works best for me. i like the classic size as the approach plates fit in more naturally. almost like having the paper version. my bias may be coming from the fact that i only have a small screen gps in the panel (430). my bias may be coming also from the fact that i made my own custom ipad holder from aluminum sheet metal, leather and felt.
  24. 1.25 and 2.5 (-5 and -10)
  25. IMHO, when a battery goes down, recharging it just kicks the can a bit down the road. You get back a fraction of the capacity only.
