  1. are you guys talking about shaw 431 fuel caps or another model ?
  2. i had rather ditch in thr lake than in the Chicago urban jungle.
  3. take away fuel starvation, CFITs, and VFR into IMC. also take away take off and landing phases where most incidents occur. .... when the engine is at flight level and purring, the odds of anything happening are statistically very very slim.
  4. it as a relatively a small issue down the road. When you think about it, folks who adopt glass technology today will likely continue to want the latest and greatest along the line of dot com world. (even if the line that links 2 waypoints is exactly the same whether on a Garmin XL155 or a G1000 !) I view Garmin today more like Apple than BendixKIng. I wonder how many iPhone users still have the iPhone 1 ? I doubt Apple still supports the iPhone 1. Obviously not the same unit price but same idea if you use AMUs) Slightly linked to this topic, I remember reading somewhere that Mooney owners tended to be early technology adopters.
  5. unfortunately, there was a lot of snow on the sierras in the recent weeks. not expecting news before spring.
  6. remove the 2 front seats and get on your back to look under the pannel (avoid hitting the trim wheel) mineis against the wall on the levt hand side ( left foot of the pilot) but look for where the 5/8 scaat ducts are going ( from the radios / gps / loran, etc ... ) to the avionics cooling box most common is the icebox type with 3 outlets. you need to look at what type it is before getting a new one ( from spruce or other)
  7. I do care about fuel but cruise ROP. (these don't have to be mutually exclusive)
  8. according to RE website, they do not do the missile conversion but RE will support the existing fleet. a great feature of all Mooneys is the strong cage frame that allowed the install of the 300 hp Missile engine. the 305hp is a heavy engine but worked out to be a great combination with the J frame. I wish Mooney Aircraft Co. would take on the challenge to develop an STC to install a > 250hp Jet A engine on the current frames. that could be a great business opportunity ... maybe.
  9. i use a 3 feet long 1inch diameter vinyl tube and connect it to the quick drain and let the oil drain in a bucket. if you let the oil drain overnight, you will find out that the filter will have drained pactically totally and it will be a breeze to remove it. also, the filter will be cold so you can spin it very fast by hand and will get no spill. i am still struggling with the oil screen and could not access it. Jetdriven suggested it is easy to access by "looking at it" from behind the engine but that did not work. appreciate any idea on that ( what it the right 7/8 wrench ???)
  10. hey Jetdriven, watch out for that shock cooling stuff. any news on your brakes bleeding ? i am in the process of changing the hoses in the gear well and worried and i will end up with nil braking action ..
  11. what is the ipad 4 anyway ?
  12. http://www.aircraftglareshield.com/mooney.htm looks like they make only 201 but may be worth giving them a call and see if they have suggestions for a C.
  13. plenty of room in a Mooney once you are seated. for a tall or big person, getting in and out may be more difficult than for other aircrafts (with 2 doors)
  14. it is often a good shortcup to cross the sierras but not a good place to loose an engine for the 10 to 15 mns the crossing lasts. can be a strong winds area too. always dreaded it .
  15. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/12/19/small-plane-disappears-over-yosemite-national-park/ i hope the pilot walked away.
  16. makes sense. gns500w + ky97 is a good nav / com combo. you need to find a 500w or makes sure you factor in a new gps and rewiring cost
  17. agreed. R&R is fine. anything else will require some level of paper work.
  18. so you replace the GPS with the same one, this Cessna is not IFR equipped anymore ? I believe for IFR you need 2 NAVs (GPS+VOR or VOR+ADF, etc ...) unless it is a WAAS GPS. Not sure the DME counts as a NAV. Maybe it does. Is the KN64 standalone ? Not a simple affair to remove a primary instruments. I suppose the GPS removed weigh more than 1 lb ?
  19. I asked specifically that question to an FAA rep very recently (although it was about removing a LORAN = also not required) The answer was, if the install was done with a form 337 , then the un-install needs to come with a form 337. Agree it can seem dumb, but don't shoot the messenger.
  20. So the owner took the GPS to install it in another aircraft ? I suppose he has filed the appropriate form 337 to keep the A/C airworthy. The GPSS does not any good without GPS.
  21. electric trims are not un-common on Mooneys. if the trim wheel is hard to turn, it may become an issue and I prefer not to hide it behind the electric trim.
  22. thanks Jetdriven and Larry. getting to the jackscrew seems easy enough. i am guessing what you call the boot is the "duct, flex instl" in the parts catalog ? i am thinking that greasing the screw that is under the trim wheel may help too. but that's a pain to get too so i will leave that for next annual. thanks again
  23. the trim wheel on my J model is very easy to turn in one direction (trim down) but harder to turn in the other direction. Anyone experiencing or observed the same ? how did you solve ? thanks ...
  24. I had to check aso.com, barnstormers, trade-a-planeI. I started to worry that all the aircraft inventory was gone.
  25. i would respectfully disagree. Looks like a legal necessity but when everything else can fail, the magnetic compass won't. if the earth magnetic lines fail .... we will have others things to worry about...
