  1. The mode c is required at any altitude inside the 30 nm radius.
  2. understood that most GA A/C rarely can find a reason to go into a class B or C airport (I never landed in SFO or LAX and don't plan to. In fact LAX does not even have 100LL !!!) But the 30nm circle with mode C required can be tough to avoid. To be honest , I am not versed to the ADS-B requirements: will ADS-B be required inside that circle just like mode C is required today ? It would be a pleasant surprised if it was not. And if it is not, my guess is that sooner or later I bet it will be.
  3. i wonder what percentage of the US GA fleet does not have a mode C transponder today. the airspace where ADS-B will be required is about the same as where mode C is required today. i agree that with mode C, everyone can get something in return ( like flight following)
  4. i thought the freeflight system would cost a lost less. i believe most owners will install ads-b out, even if they don't need it. pilot owners love to buy very capable unitbut use only a small fraction of that capability.
  5. Jim you may want to look at freeflight systems, they are developping a box that will include the waas receiver and the ads-b out. i saw their product at oshkosh. simple basis system to comply that won' t interface or interfere with what you currently have ( the internal gps waas receiver is not used for navigation but only to send position to the fed ! i am not affiliated with them and still looking at similar concept.
  6. this is how the free market works: what you absolutly must have = $$$$$$ what you don't have to have = a lot less $ for me, between now and 2020: spend as little as i can on complying with ADS-B out. get the weather and traffic on the cheap: portable, iPad , right now, the option i like most is the Freeflight all in one box (waas receiver and ADS-B out in one box, no need to mess with existing equipment). i have not made thejump yet.
  7. I am thinking that the original question was the difference between PANEL MOUNTED GPS. For handheld, it is easy: they are not approved for anything and you may as well use the cheapest GPS that are sold for cars navigation (these probably won't have an airport database or FAA background). They are approved by the buyer ! I approved by iPad and my old Lowrance handheld ! Between an IFR approved GPS and a VFR approved GPS (both panel mounted) the big difference is the RAIM as already indicated by someone above (details in the respective TSO standards) The RAIM is a check that the GPS receiver is receiving sufficient satellite signals and working within an error range
  8. the harness they had on display looked nice and tidy. just wary about "recycle" if a wire is forgotten or a plug is short, etc ... It is not that easy to built your own harness. There are so many connector type and they don't come cheap.
  9. I came accross a company called "Approachfaststack" at oshkosh. They make a TSO'ed hub and custom wiring harnesses based on the avionics you have. It looks like very nice way to clean decades of bad workmanship from avionics shops. (they add wires but don't bother removing the old ones). Thats why I am always reluctant to give them more business !!! I would make the jump but I am a bit worried something may end up not working. Anyone used their service ? www.approachfaststack.com
  10. garmin 330 instead of the kt76c and be ads-b compliant.
  11. you can download the GNS 430 install manual from several websites. (google search). you can see in the instal diagrams all the indicators that can be. used.
  12. I try to switch tank when within gliding distance of an airstrip.
  13. Quote: N601RX Why not just buy a few feet of Aeroquip hose and reuse your old ends as long as they are not showing any corrosion? Lot cheaper than new hoses from a hose shop.
  14. there is a cost to inspection and there is a cost for repairs. they can be quite different.
  15. the annual is in March 2013 .... LFMAO .... it will take at least an annual to get behind the wheel ...
  16. iMHO, a Mooney is not a great trainer plane. i would not practice touch and goes in it. however, learning how to go around is needed (in any aircraft)
  17. the free market does not exclude trying to get as much as you can from the buyer. quite the opposite, it is about getting as much as the market can bear. add to that that the product needs to be certified or mandated (waas / ads-. a gps waas will be mandated by the ads-b requirement. try to buy a gps for the golf course that will end up as clutter in the garage sooner than later, and the price will be very different. that was my cinical 2 cents about market completion.
  18. P/N for the spring is: 916008-009. I don't know how specific it is to Mooney. As far that gear safety switch, are you talking about the one tied to the airspeed indicator ? I once got 175 knots but I cannot remember if it was ROP or LOP and whether the spinner was on or off ...
  19. great read. keep up the good work.
  20. better to put more catching names like LOP or bladders or more sexy names like garmin and aspen if you want attention on this forum .... back to your question... apart from the case of engine oil, i keep a can of tri- flo, a can of corrosion x and mil spec aero shell grease
  21. Personally, I am not a big fan of Narco avionics ...
  22. unfortunately, unlike cars, aircraft engines are air cooled.
  23. what you can use is stated in the service manual and parts manual. you don't want to use anything else that would stay stuck in the gear wells. Anyway, for what reason would you want to use anything else ?
  24. "aviation" stuff is expensive in part because of liability (read potential lawsuits). some win but we all pay.
  25. 5 weeks seems a bit long for a trade. but vacation is great !
