Where to find Charlie Weights for M20M?
carusoam replied to CGKEM's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
This is quirky… was there a light weight prop mounted up front? or did somebody add an O2 bottle? or Fiki system or AC? There is lots of volume back there for alternative metals to be selected… A nice stainless block to meet your Bravo’s requirements could work well. the local gym supplier has some nice steel blocks for their gym equipment… Be sure to have your mechanic review the details with you… WnB is too easy to make critical math mistakes… + look extra hard to find out why the old ones were removed… there isn’t a logical reason to just take them out, undocumented… there are a few Bravos and an Ovation that have flown west to be recycled… see if @Alan Fox is familiar… pp thoughts only, -a- -
Prayers for our Mooney brother! he went the the long distance typical of our Mooniacs. Best regards, -a-

Visit your Mooney (NNJ or nearby-ish)?
carusoam replied to nycrobaviation's topic in General Mooney Talk
KCDW has a Mooney Service Center… so you might see a bunch of Mooneys only coming in for the week… Seeing an Acclaim would be awesome! there is an O at 39N…. That guy talks Mooneys 24/7… there is a J in Linden… you can see a lot of that one on YT… Best regards, -a- -
What is the high end of the range for M20Js…? Near 200amu lately? Trying to find a plane this nice is a real challenge lately… In other news… markets are up off the bottom, 401Ks are getting refilled… But, an invisible recession is reported to be out there somewhere… and a few banks have failed… without much domino affect….yet. GLWTS…. or not selling… whichever happens. Go M20R! Best regards, -a-

Can’t argue with that logic! Go mike! Best regards, -a-

Dual electronic ignition upgrade on a J?
carusoam replied to Kirch56H's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Question…. If we could eliminate the wasted spark… (our plugs typically spark twice, prior to the power stroke, and again, wasted one, prior to the intake stroke…) Would the plugs really wear out at half the rate? Aka last twice as many hours…? Plugs are goffle expensive… when purchased a dozen at a time… Best regards, -a- -
You are going to need a bumper sticker for C172…. My other plane is a Mooney! Park next to Alan’s V-tail…. Best regards, -a-

SWAPPING VACUUM-DRIVEN SPEED BRAKES FOR ELECTRIC ONES IN M20K
carusoam replied to 231LV's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
DC, Find the Missile…. They put a six cylinder, 300hp, Continental IO550… in a mid body M20J! They, is Rocket Engineering… The IO540 will only get you 3/4 of the way there… You want the IO720… that is going the full distance!!! Just remember…. If you go IO720… when it comes time for the OH…. You have to become one with your maintainer…. or something like that… The IO720 is cool for one reason… it’s like a twin… yet, no matter what the failure is… you won’t get an extreme off center thrust situation…. Excess HP is everything… Excess HP is even better at cruise altitude…. Go Turbo! NA PP thoughts only, not a TC’d PP… Best regards, -a- -
Alt Field On or Off during engine start and shutdown
carusoam replied to bucko's topic in General Mooney Talk
In case I need to know… What happens if I turn off the master while the engine is still alive? Now I have to go see where my VR is wired to…. Best regards, -a- -
Around here… We see a bunch of exhaust valves that stop turning, before they fail… and, at least one valve that tulip’d…. Literally looked like a tulip after it got damaged… and one, that got jammed… valve guide packed with carbon…. Valve stuck in the down position and met the piston crown moving upwards… causing a small bend in the valve’s rod… our best defense is an engine monitor and the ability to review the data… or recognize an EGT that is higher than the rest… The minor failure, the valve stops working properly, long before it fails completely… We want to get good enough to recognize the minor failure before it gets worse…. We probably get many flights and several hours before things get bad… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-

great pirep on the value of Savvy membership! Thanks for sharing the details. Invite @kortopates to stop by… Best regards, -a-

Are pilots going to be replaced by AI?
carusoam replied to ilovecornfields's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Holy cow! I think you guys have nailed it… three ways to Sunday! 1) We can all benefit by good automation… 2) Good automation requires decent sensors… 3) Decent sensors have the ability to let things know when they aren’t working properly anymore… and not include the erroneous information… (post it note over the bad data) 4) For Automation to replace a two person crew…. That is a technical possibility… but requires the remaining crew member to not have health issues while at work… no heart attacks allowed. 5) did anyone mention a back-up plan for a single pilot casualty? The plane gets landed remotely, by a pilot controlling from corporate headquarters…? 6) Speaking of normal law…. How much computer, sensor, and logic technology is covered in flight school lately? (Probably a lot more post y2k, than before) Looks like we can be discussing the steps required to get to the full automation that is in the future… R.I.P. Gordon Moore, started at Fairchild electronics, before building Intel… Moore’s Law…. The number of transistors on a chip will double every year…. (Stated in the mid 60s…) and was still holding when I learned about it in the mid 80s… before slowing to doubling every 1.6 years or so… 286, 386, 486, Pentium…. Then multiple cores and parallel processing… Where Intel has run into trouble lately… they haven’t been able to make the transistors smaller like AMD and NVDA have been doing… NVDA has announced their latest standard… a 4-nano standard… if this pans out… Moore’s law gets Re-invigorated… Making the transistors smaller… 1) Saves energy 2) more efficient to keep cool 3) operates faster, does more work…. The amount of work required for real AI to occur. 4) fits in a smaller package Proof of this… have you seen how well the faster GPS and faster autopilots actually control things…? Until they have difficulty with things that stick or slip…. The AI guys are happy with this chip, as are the Crypto miners…. https://www.pcmag.com/news/nvidias-latest-gpu-boasts-a-4-nanometer-process-from-tsmc-pcie-gen-5 Chip designs made in the US and Europe are very powerful…. Chip manufacturing for these designs are often in Taiwan, an island country off the coast of China… TSMc There are a lot of trade restrictions for these technologies to keep chips, designs, and their manufacturing equipment… from making their way to China and Russia… capitalism, communism, and war… Keep teaching STEM topics to everyone that can take it… See how many computers are running in your favorite restaurant, barbershop, car mechanic’s shop… For the person that asked… where is the engine monitor on that fancy instrument panel…. (Bar graph ends at 85mph, but indicated speed goes well past 100) The engine monitor is behind the instrument panel with a dual output… yellow service engine soon, and red service engine now…. The monitor, when it senses certain things like engine knock… it can cut engine timing and reduce throttle input on its own… not ideal for driving… not very workable for flying…. And for those that ignore the lights… the engine keeps limping along at about 80 percent power max, until the catalytic converter packs up…. Then you have 0% power until you can find a drill to poke holes in some sheet metal…. On the other hand… I just asked Alexa… who was Wilbur’s brother? And she gave me both brother’s full names… When I typed ‘wilbur’ into Google… a few Wilburs showed up and Wright was third from the top…. I still like the real MSers better than the AI MSers… the fake MSers have no personality or other machines they have…. I think it took me about three hours to read this entire thread… Go MS! Best regards, -a- -
I think we still have one around the house somewhere…. Left over from boating in the 70s…. I don’t think we ever saw it work back in the day either… Best regards, -a-

Gever, Is there a reason for your preference for a toggle switch for the avionics master? I have the Master, Alt, Avionics… in pretty much the same place in the O. All three switches look identical, and feel identical…. It’s easy to push the wrong one when reaching in from the outside during the pre-flight…. (Electric Stall warning and pitot heat get turned off via the master during the walk around) Panel looks really nice! Best regards, -a-

Ovation 2 GX - Cover above panel removal
carusoam replied to dvk's topic in Avionics/Panel Discussion
@dvk Which AP did you get with your G1000? I have the older BK KAP150… where it’s altitude sensor is inside the AP box, connected to the static system…. Many times around here… the tube that connects the AP to the static system is a rubber tube… that doesn’t age very well… it only goes 20 or 30 years before it cracks… So, be on the look out for what is connecting the AP control head to the static system… If it is a sensor issue… it may be Taking the AP box out for service… If you have a a Garmin AP, find Trek… he can give good insight about the sensor and it’s location inside the box… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… or instrument guru… Best regards, -a- -
TSIO-520-NB throttle and turbo control questions....
carusoam replied to wombat's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
One of the cool things about buying a bird from GMax…. (Where this and another Rocket is listed) They are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to buying a Mooney from them…. They can bring you up to speed with everything about the bird in general… and they usually know the specifics about the individual bird as they typically buy it before selling to a customer…. Not just handle it…or rep it. They are able to arrange training for you… and any equipment updates you might want to consider during the buying process… The tough decision…. It is always a good idea to get your PPI from an independent source of the person selling the plane….( Four eyes vs. two) GMax is both the best pre-flown Mooney seller, and the best Mooney service center in the world…. Together in one place. So not so independent… I learned about M20Cs while speaking with Jimmy’s partner (David), in the late 90s… I was back a decade later learning about Ovations with David and Jimmy…. Got the O’s PPI done at DMax… Did the transition training with Bob Cabe… A really good memorable experience… I last saw Jimmy at a Mooney gathering in KOSH…. Pre-pandemic… Best regards, -a- -

SWAPPING VACUUM-DRIVEN SPEED BRAKES FOR ELECTRIC ONES IN M20K
carusoam replied to 231LV's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Precise flight is pretty good with their support… Be on the lookout for the change in footprint between the old and newer speed brakes… Also be on the lookout for change in mount location…. Some Mooneys got the brakes located in front of the spar, others are behind the spar…. Watch extra close to dimensions if your speed brakes are in a box, inside a fuel tank…. Electric speed brakes are nice to have. PP thoughts only… Not a mechanic… Best regards, -a- -

TSIO-520-NB throttle and turbo control questions....
carusoam replied to wombat's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Get a good Transition Trainer… Somebody with Mooney turbo experience… You are asking great questions…. There is a bunch of practical stuff to get familiar with regarding turbo ops and maintenance and preflight…. There is also a bunch to know for flying in the Flight Levels…. O2 system, O2 level measuring, Back up systems…. Much will depend on what you get for a turbo waste gate controller… some are more manual than others… The most automated one is nice, but not completely automated at all…. Overall, it is really cool to have a turbo, or a pair of turbos…. … and a MP controller…. Throw in an intercooler when able… get good instrumentation to support it all…. Know what mouse milk is… Get ready to do a lot of reading for the new bird! Post pics when able! PP thinking out loud, I would love to add a pair of turbos to my Ovation…. Best regards, -a-
