Good news… you got the 201 style windshield… very aerodynamic. Bad news… you still have the carb’d O360! Not really bad news… but, I was hoping they put the whole M20J up front for you. Best regards, -a-

Ivan, Do you have the ship’s rudder trim fighting with a new GFC500 rudder yaw damper system? There are discussions of how to best operate the system to keep the two from fighting… Sounds like you have something different going on… just wanted to let you know of this other more common situation…. M20K engine cylinder #2 low CHT and strange sound when running
carusoam replied to JC2020's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
One plug going on vacation…. 1) Drops the CHT a bit… as excess fuel gets past the exhaust valve…instead of burning inside the cylinder. 2) EGT increases as the excess fuel burns in front of the EGT sensor instead… 3) Dead plug becomes super noticeable during the single mag part of the run-up… EGT drops out immediately. 4) Using CHT data… there is a ton of time lag going on… EGT data would be more definite… Quick trouble shooting uses both EGT and CHT data, then FF and other parameters as required… PP thoughts only, JC has been approved to spend money at Savvy! Best regards, -a- -
M20K engine cylinder #2 low CHT and strange sound when running
carusoam replied to JC2020's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
JC, CHT2 clearly isn’t behaving the same as the rest… slow to come up to speed and fast to drop off… I would rather see the EGTs… the CHTs are following what is going on in the inside… EGTs are closer to the inside challenge… See if you can share the link where these graphs came from… +1 for Savvy’s skill at reading the data.p and making decisions… Run-ups with nice slow transitions between key positions are really helpful… Best regards, -a- -

Keep an eye out for the PA46T The Piper 6 seater with the Rocket Engineering PT6 turbine STC… If you liked the Missile… Ask Jerry about his JetProp…. Doc can fill you in on all the Piper details… Best regards, -a- -

Welcome aboard DH! +1 on Toto’s, Rag’s, and Scott’s recommendations… I would prefer one that was OH’d more recently, and had fewer hours… A lower cost engine OH… requires the crank and cam to be in Serviceable condition… things like starters, alternators, and fuel systems may be pretty worn too…. My first Mooney was 30+years old on its third motor OH… before I got it… Having it sit idle was probably terrible for its health… it also lived outside. Many technical people would love this opportunity, and prefer to buy this plane and start the OH program of their choice… Don’t buy this plane… if saving money is the goal…. Engines can go to 3k hours…. But, they usually don’t do it slowly at 100hrs per year… that’s 30 years… Compression is a good measurement for cylinder health… but doesn’t tell you anything about the cam and crank bearing surfaces health… As a new pilot, and a new owner… how familiar are you with engine maintenance… do you like to swap parts out of your car’s engine, you recognize when your Chevy 350’s timing is off, because your quarter mike time is a bit long? If you dig measuring 0 - 60 times…. You will love collecting T/O times and distances… If performance measurement isn’t your thing… buy it because you look forward to the OH process…. Just don’t buy it hoping it will go to 2900 hrs next year… Hope is a terrible flight plan! What is your intention for the new 2U plane, with a very worn in engine? Go (whole) Mooney! Best regards, -a-

@Tommooney Perfect! That fills in all the blanks! Thanks for sharing the pic. Nice work @SMeestercpa!!! Best regards, -a- -
Eric, That looks like the guts can be swapped out for the next standard when it arrives…. My biggest hold from installing plugs in my panel… is having it become defunct in a year or two… Thanks for supplying all the phone technology answers!!! Best regards, -a-

Start getting a feel for airworthy vs non-airworthy issues… Even non-AW corrosion on control parts can be cleaned up… the gear toothed starter ring is often coated from the factory… the light oxidation on the surface isn’t the kind that makes it fall apart… Buying a new gear isn’t all that expensive… getting it installed will be a bigger surprise… see if it has all of its teeth… my M20C was missing one. It is held in place using friction heat the ring to have it expand, keep the engine cool with ice, they come apart… prop has to be removed and replaced… If you have two identical planes side by side… select the one with the fewer issues… Corrosion and seriousness… 1) Inside the engine… huge AW issue when the cam lobes get ground off… 2) inside the steel tubing… huge AW issue when the tubes rot… 3) deep into the alloy structures… huge AW issue when deep into structural materials…. 4) Surface corrosion is much easier to fix…. Intergranular corrosion is more serious… 5) Plastic panels for the interior… some are available new… some get rehabbed… plenty of reading around here for that… Most Mooneys don’t suffer from these issues while actively cared for… Open eyes, and annual inspections, are great tools to avoid this… A PPI is the best insurance available when buying a plane… imperfect. But, best available… My M20C lived outside for decades… a cover is a nice way to keep the excess heat and moisture away from important things… Plane parts are expensive… similar to car parts and boat parts… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-

True true… More of old tradition… Where having complete logs is beneficial to everyone’s interest… But very little is actually required if you buy a plane sans logs from a government auction… Missing logs… is a huge pain when an AD comes out… and your plane has no records to look up the gear in the center of your engine… To comply would require opening things up to look at part numbers… Of course build records are stored with the engine builder, if they are still around… and there are cases where you would still want to go inside to look… Sooo… expect logs for… - airframe - engine - prop Missing logs often come with a hit to their value… Also expect… some Mooneys haven’t received their first recording engine monitor yet… My M20C never got one… that was only 10 years ago… The coolest engine monitors are the EIS from Big G… probably calculates out G forces in steep turns… and tons of other flight related data… PP thoughts only, not an aircraft sales guy… Best regards, -a-

what’s going on with your pics? I can’t remember what causes this to happen… If you can send them via PM, I can repost… Best regards, -a-

Flying magazine Mooney vs. Grumman article - Issue 936
carusoam replied to CChris's topic in General Mooney Talk
Wasn’t the Grumman family supposed to come unglued at some point last century? Or that hasn’t happened yet… maybe next century as the world gets hotter… or colder…. I’m going to need an IO550 on stiff legs… In a few decades, until our insurance guru gets this issue straightened out… he’s getting older too…. Best regards, -a- -
Welcome aboard Jason… That sounds interesting… we have a couple of AP gurus around here… Lets invite @Jake@BevanAviation to stop by (KAP150 misbehavior) Best regards, -a-

She looks familiar… 1980 pic… Don’t order the fish… No budget back then either… I should post Otto in the AI discussion… -a-
