  1. Child separator! Everyone with two kids is familiar… What is Jason flying lately? Best regards, -a-
  2. Be sure to get the correct P/N… The same dial gets used for various Mooneys… but the artwork on the dial face will be specific to the tank it is used on… or the location of the dial in regards to the tank… The crazing on these lenses seams a bit deep…. It is the wrong polymer for outdoor use… Check with the headlight surface cleaners from the aviation aisle at AutoZone… they have a buff-out kit that could work if it is only a top surface issue… but, it looks like the cracks go further into the material, than just the top surface… bummer… Pp thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  3. Summary… 1) Possible theft by deception… 2) unfortunately involving an MSC… Let’s send an invite to @Jonny in the event he hasn’t been brought up to speed on this one… And a big thanks to Kyle for offering to help on the behalf of Big G! Hang in there GoalStop! Thanks for sharing your situation! Best regards, -a-
  4. 1) the ads suddenly appear the day the subscription runs out… 2) Your PayPal account shows the last payment… Methods I have used in the past… Best regards, -a-
  5. News to me… Interesting. Thanks for sharing it. Best regards, -a-
  6. Great advice from around the Mooney world!!! Best regards, -a-
  7. If you know… 1) Which Mooney you want to have forever… things get easier. 2) If you are not familiar with forever-plane economics… you will find the idea of buying and selling planes is expensive…. 3) There is one MSer around here that buys a plane every other year or so… but, he isn’t buying the entry level plane… 4) avionics more than 20-30 years old are getting replaced with digital equivalents…. 5) Ok to buy a plane with 30 year old avionics… but don’t be surprised how expensive it is to replace…. 6) Get the most updated Mooney you can afford, that meets your current and future requirements…. 7) Start reading up on PPIs…. Wallet protection! +1 for favor the active plane over the hangar queen… Go Mooney! Best regards, -a-
  8. There are screws for that… but sensitive between too tight and too loose… ask Don Muncy… he is the resident expert on all things visor related. Question for @gmonnig… nice iPad mount location! Any issue with head clearance…? I’m tall enough that my head is near the roof… Best regards, -a-
  9. For pre-flown parts… @Alan Fox and @SheryLoewen This part is a piece of the whole assembly… that is incredibly important to have whole. There aren’t many extra seats around… Good luck with the hunt! Best regards, -a-
  10. Beer, Mormons, and Brand P… We may have left the reservation… I always wanted to ask @toomany how many is too many? But, I think I have the answer now… Best regards, -a-
  11. Probably need to get some Mooney pictures to help out the Gallagher organization…. Go BatteryMinder! Best regards, -a-
  12. Welcome aboard PharmD! We don’t have enough of you guys around…. Let me invite a Mooney CFII from your part of the Mooney world…. +1 for getting trained in your plane, and getting your plane home while doing the Transition Training… Find @donkaye Don is one of the best Mooney Transition Trainers, and he is from the San Fran area… If you see his instrument panel… you will want to have your new2U panel upgraded…. Best regards, -a-
  13. Welcome aboard Conc…. Great questions. You are going to find it challenging to rent a Mooney and get instruction in them…. There is an older thread around here listing all of the known Mooneys that can be rented around the world…. Are you interested in traveling to fly a Mooney? There is an MSC in NJ that offers this service. There is also a thread around here of all of the Mooney CFIs…. One thing to consider…. your insurance company is going to require you to have some dual instruction… and possibly some additional solo time after that… As a pilot with low hours… expect that you will rent a CFI to ferry the plane back with you… this is where you hire a Mooney specific CFI and get the most out of your money while learning the most about your plane. It is normal for pilots with experience to do this as well…. Mooneys have the speed to cross several states and weather systems in a single flight… Flying your new2u plane has enough stress with it…. You don’t want to add solo in an unfamiliar plane, in unfamiliar parts of the country, and icing or IMC…. Its better for your health this way… Another thing to consider… is the cost of insurance. If you have 100 Mooney hours… some money can be saved compared to zero Mooney hours… but, renting a Mooney for 100 hours can use up a lot of money to save on insurance…. I didn’t think to ask how many hours you have, or what your experience level is… you might want to fill that in… as a renter, I didn’t get enough experience… that is why I bought my first Mooney… an M20C. PP thoughts only, not a CFI… Go Mooney! Best regards, -a-
  14. See if we are saying the same thing… Brittain wing leveler system…. 1) Uses a gyro to control the system…. Tail mounted in 1965 and older… electric driven. 2) Uses vacuum to operate the servos… those rubber bladder devices in a plastic can… 3) To have an operating wing leveler… the vac is going to be required… vacuum pumps aren’t too horrible to keep active… They are terrible for powering primary flight instruments in IMC, with their low MTBF rates…. But, for powering a wing leveler, until a newer AP can be installed…. Keep the vac system. Best regards, -a-
  15. Point well taken…. Or did something not clearly get explained, or understood…? The GA version of MELs (minimum equipment list) are in our POHs… The wing levelers and APs are nice, but are not usually required equipment for IFR flight… (I just checked the M20R POH) Going all electric is pretty common lately… Vacuum operated steps have been replaced in the hundreds around here… find @takair Rob for details… he has a nice website for additional info… The biggest challenge is for people with vac operated speed brakes… they require exchanging units… with different foot prints… Keep in mind… the wing leveler in Mooneys became standard in 1965… for a reason. Human beings flying in IMC tend to need something to hold the wings level every now and then…. Sooooo… go electric with the instruments…. Keep the vac system for the Brittain system… there is a complete system around here recently… If you fly VFR only, the wing leveler is nice to have… not so much a safety of flight issue as flying in IMC…. PP thoughts only, not a CFII…. Best regards, -a-
  16. Nice list Fritz! Add some easy contacts to that… For pre-flown parts… @Alan Fox and @SheryLoewen (same Loewen in the Fritz list) Best regards, -a-
  17. Keep in mind… There is a gear box for the trim system in the tail… If you have difficulty with the trim system’s lubrication…. There are two sources of grease turning to rocks over time…. One is in the gear box, the other is the Jack screw… One is much easier to clean than the other… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  18. Mooneys have two traditional dimmers… 1) Instrument lights 2) Interior lights No idea what goes to the tail regarding the dimming of lights… unless the baggage compartment light gets dimmed…(?) Best regards, -a-
  19. How old is the system? Got any pics of the black film? What brake fluid do you have in there? The older brake fluid / aka Cherry juice… would get old and gel up… while turning a darker red… PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… Best regards, -a-
  20. I added the bolding to this step…. So it stands out as a memory item… TKS is a great system, but comes with a couple of best practices to adhere to… for best results… Best regards, -a-
  21. Sounds like a technicality… The fluid itself doesn’t cause corrosion… But it sure can hold water in it… Best to not have leaks… Pp thoughts only, not a mechanic or chemist… Best regards, -a-
  22. Inflation in the 70s was interesting… You could buy something new this year… and sell it next year for more than you paid. So using it for a year appeared to cost nothing… Everyone around the water cooler spoke about their investment in their car/plane/boat… stepping up to the next model made a bunch of sense… Cents… If you bought something that was too challenging to own… you could just sell it to the next person for less than a new one… Truth be known… inflation was more terrible than most people understood at the time… It took decades to realize how much dough was being lost on things that weren’t affordable. +1 for price stability and maximum employment… -Fed’s Dual Mandate Imagine how easy it was to sell a plane to somebody that wanted one… Buy it today, it will be worth more tomorrow…! Technically, it was worth a bit less, but it was priced higher… inflation masked the being worth a bit less part… A big challenge for those with the dough to spend… If I blow 1MM on a toy… there is an opportunity lost cost that is quite large… and annual budget for the toy to stay airworthy, and out of the elements…. Ask a millennial why they aren’t a pilot… or GenX, Y or any other…. The cost of training is an expensive first step… several thousands of dollars… The next step isn’t as obvious… the rental plane they have become familiar with… has to be back after their flight has finished… People have to be sorta financially intelligent to play this game long term… Not much different than owning a home… But, What percentage of millenials own their own home today? holy cow homes have gotten expensive again… and interest rates are up combatting inflation… The customer for a great new XC airplane… is often a businessman with two distant factories, offices, or customers… It is a financially lower cost solution…. Only a few experimentals fit this category… Nothing cooler than being able to see a customer in their office tomorrow… except, if they need parts, or a service man… that can happen today… Go Mooney! Best regards, -a-
  23. Savvy, Mike Busch, and Social Flight… discussing the AD, with pictures…
  24. Phased upgrades are too expensive to work… Good news… spend your first year flying and determine what you want… fly, train, eat, sleep…. Prep for year two! If your new2U plane becomes a forever-plane… go all in! in year one… figure out if you are a Big G fan… or if you like avionics integration… -a-
  25. What we know…. 1) The FAA writes guidance with intentional large generalizations that require specific opinion letters every now and then…. 2) Big G being equally bright… appears to have found a way to work within the framework of the FAA documents… No opinion letters required… just a membership in a good flying community… Best regards, -a-
