  1. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of maintaining currency and proficiency.
  2. I think it depends on a lot of factors. Outside temps, baffle quality, power settings, etc. But on my plane (231) before a relatively recent overhaul, about 3/4 inch at the back of the cowl flap, seemed to be about right. Try that, fly it some and adjust as necessary.
  3. You can take out the QD and replace it with the standard plug. But I think they are safety wired, and removing and replacing it each time you change the oil, is a nuisance. The QDs are generally trouble free. I would take it out, clean it and check the O-ring.
  4. No problem. That system works well, but it is hard to describe.
  5. I think we are talking about the same thing. I may not have described it very well. A little round knob sticks out from the plastic side panel, through an arc shaped slot/hole in the plastic. When you rotate the knob through that arc, it moves the cable (forward and backward) that opens and closes the valve at the regulator.
  6. I don't know about Js, but my 231 has a lever type device for O2 in that area. It is a long curved slot with a knob that pushes fore and aft to push/pull the cable operating the valve on the O2 regulator.
  7. I don't think it makes much difference what you use, but if the wind comes up, I think you need something. I made my gust lock from metal bar I had on hand. See my album. I know, it is over engineered, but I like tinkering with things.
  8. Go back in the previous W & B documents and see what it had from the factory and then check the changes. You might be able to see how/when the problem popped up.
  9. All the sandblasting I have seen used a pressure high enough to push dents in aluminum. I'm no expert.
  10. It seems to me that the most likely effective (although far from perfect) requirement would be for the sellers of drones be required to affix (relatively tough to remove) identification plates on the drones and register the sale. At least, if and when they can find the remains, they could have someone to charge.
  11. I don't claim to be an expert, and do not have any test data to back up my dryer use, but I run my dehumidifier for 5 or 10 minutes after every flight, and it is then on an automatic "5 minutes per day" cycle. I have about 1/2 gallon of dessicant and have to regenerate it every 3 or 4 months. I'm in Dallas and I'm sure it makes a difference.
  12. I built my own. Glad to share what I have and did.
  13. Oops, my brain switched back to foreign cars, and wrongly concluded 360 was in liters. Must you guys continually point out my errors
  14. And remember that is on a 350 cu inch engine. On your engine it would be substantially less. But it should last substantially longer.
  15. Thanks Paul. That was what I expected. If it was easy, everyone would have done it. Thanks John, I am not so worried about whether the Merlyn would hold really close to a MP. What I would like is to be able to push the throttle full in and take off, without having to watch the MP while accelerating down the runway. (However, I admit is not a real problem when you get used to it.) I am also not particularly interested in the critical altitude increase. I have never flown my plane above 18K. I don't expect I ever will unless it was a temporary bump over some weather.
  16. Are those automatic wastegates retrofittable to the LB engine. I had originally contemplated a Merlyn for my 231, until I learned they were not "set and forget". If I'm going to have to fiddle with the throttle anyway, I'm not much better off.
  17. Having a GPS on your first solo cross country is like cheating. There is nothing like the "I might be lost" feeling your first time away from your familiar area by yourself. I didn't get into any trouble, but I had some "are you sure that is lake x" moments.
  18. To me, the only question is when you begin the slip. You can slip all the way from when you first see the runway, or crab all the way to down very close to the ground and change to a slip (kick) at the last minute. I prefer the latter, but recognize that others may prefer to slip all the way.
  19. Has anyone had an issue that responded to a plug change (massive to fine wire, or Champion to Tempest) on a continental. Please pardon me if this has previously been posted and I missed it.
  20. Depends on your definition of a big deal. Provided you don't want to try to salvage the windshield, you drill out all the rivets on the panel below the windshield and remove it. Break the windshield into pieces and remove them. Scraping all the adhesive off is the tough part. Using plastic scrapers, it will take three hours or more. Part of the problem is the skin above and on the sides is left in place and you are scraping underneath them.
  21. Come on guys. You are making me feel stupid. (But I hope it is just ignorance)
  22. I enjoyed driving with manual transmissions and being able to heel and toe downshift well is an ego building exercise. However, the modern automatics are so good, it really makes about as much sense to insist on a manual as it does to work math problems on a slide rule. So sad to lose the need for skills we worked so hard to develop.
  23. I use Avionics 1st at RBD. Not cheap but very knowledgeable and nice guys.
  24. If you lament to demise of manual transmissions, wait until we are overrun with self driving cars. When I first heard about them, I thought the world might be coming to an end. Now I am not so sure. From my perspective, it seems a very large percentage of the US drivers have absolutely no interest in driving, knowing how to drive or enjoying driving. The majority seem to want to be able to get into a climate controlled, soft, quiet environment and be taken to their desired destination with the least amount of effort, thought or skill, so they can get on their latest electronic device and chat or play games. This attitude, IMHO, is the primary reason our traffic death rate is so horrible. We will all live longer if all of them get into their self driving cars, so they don't run into the ones who know how to drive. I just hope they will leave some roads available for us to use while they are being transported in safety. Sorry; rant off. Back to the original thread.
  25. Mine is virtually invisible without the light. I'll double check to verify I'm not losing my mind.
