I agree. Everybody gets to make their own judgment about how they contribute or not. I am a charter member of the CB club, but I feel like I get a lot more from MS than I give. I still post advice etc. when I think have something to contribute. (Some of it may even be accurate )

I am amazed and extremely proud of the guys like Clarence and Don Maxwell that essentially give away what is normally sold. When I practiced law, I would never have even considered joining a list to help people with their legal problems and often avoid them having to hire me, or someone like me. I also would not even consider the possibility of trying to get information about my car from a car dealership by phone. I have seen Maxwell spend a lot of time talking to people all over the country about their Mooney problems, knowing they were not coming to him for service. I know that Don, Clarence and others we haven't mentioned, get business from some of us, but I really do not think that is their primary motivation. I think they really like Mooneys and Mooney owners and want to help us. Thanks guys.

Thanks, that helps.

On today's flight, activating speed brakes (Precise Flight - electric) caused the breaker to trip. Is removal to look for the cause something a relatively talented hangar elf could attempt. The installation manual says the unit should be returned to Precise Flight for repair.

Tim, I would think that trying to install a "built-in" O2 system would overwhelm virtually anyone, if they wanted to make it legal. If having your hangar elf do a built-in, I would find someone like me who has a system and copy that. I would be quite careful about W & B. I think probably Aerox has all the stuff you would need, especially if you decide on a portable system. I don't know anyone who uses medical O2. In today's world, all O2, medical, welding and aviation comes from the same manufacturers. Paying extra for anything other than welding O2, is a waste of money IMHO. I would have to look it up, but I think the requirement for inspection is 5 years for a hydro test, and a set tank replacement limit. (for my steel tank, it is 15 years)

HOUSE, SENATE INCLUDE MEDICAL REFORM IN FAA EXTENSION
DonMuncy replied to GeorgePerry's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
George, I hate to sound like a wet blanket, but it doesn't seem to me we are a lot better off (assuming the things I have been reading are true). I seems we are trading an exam from an AME who is closely regulated in what he is to examine, and what the parameters are, for an exam by "some" doctor who is guessing at what he thinks are important items for a pilot and his interpretation of the parameters. Will the cost be better? Who knows. Will there be a shopping spree for doctors who aren't too worried about what it takes to be a safe pilot? How long will it be before a plaintiff's lawyer sues a doctor for "certifying" an impaired pilot? Will the word then spread, so no doctor will be willing to sign you off, without dozens of tests, if at all? This is a long way from self certifying with a driver's license. I think for the foreseeable future, I will still be visiting my friendly AME. Hope my fears are unjustified. -
Byron, What do those $54 jack points look like. I don't think I have seen them.

Sorry to take up band width for a personal message in the blind. James, I deleted your original message and don't have any other way to contact you. Thanks, you didn't have to do that.

If my memory is correct, they are 1/4 inch 28 tpi. Although the factory rods are threaded on each end, all thread would work just as well and are readily available at better hardware stores (In the aviation section, of course )
-
They look to me to be pretty closed when closed. Have you adjusted all the length you can on both top and bottom joint connectors. My hangar elf would not mind cutting longer "all thread" rods to get them open more if needed.
-
I think you are about right for the stuff. But I would not pay rental on tanks. I would watch Craigslist and buy me one (or a couple).
-
Setting up a fill system is a bit of a pain, and if not done really well, can get really expensive. I doubt I will recover the costs, but the convenience is well worth it.

You will probably want to go with the type tank your plane came with. My 231 (1982) had a steel one, and it is not too heavy. I replaced it in 2009 with one I got from Aerox. By dropping Dr. Bob's name, they gave me a discount and it still cost $920 or so.
-
Sounds like the only other thing you need is to add the GPSS. I have the DAC International, GDC31. Not too expensive and works beautifully.

I've had the same problem with my FF. But although mine sometimes reads zero, at the end of a flight it gives (what I think) is an accurate total used.

Beta Testers needed for new iPad GA app
DonMuncy replied to compilotrc's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I think you are saying that a Blue tooth dongle could be plugged into one of the mic jacks in the plane and the Blue Tooth receiver plugged into that, and it would take the wireless audio from my IPad and send it through the intercom or through the audio panel and picked up in all of the headsets in the system. All of the dongles I saw on a quick google were USB. It looks like the blue tooth receiver has the same type plug as the mic plug on the headset. Would it plug directly into the mic jack? I could probably talk myself into $15 or $20 to get the audio on the altitude app, but probably not worth it for a lot of work or expense. Remember, you are dealing with a technological idiot here. -

I'm not sure my audio panel has a (readily accessible) plug-in for music. Do most of them? Maybe I just don't know where or how. -
I have held off from jumping into this fray as long as I can. I do not claim to have read (or perhaps be able to understand) all the information concerning the fuel level indications, but it appears to me that the “tone” of Fuellevel’s posts is that the widespread use his products would substantially change the number of crashes/deaths due to fuel starvation. (Don't get hung up on the starvation term. Use whichever one you prefer) I don’t have any data to support my opinion, but that opinion is that this is highly unlikely to be true. Is more accurate fuel level indication a good thing? Absolutely yes. Are his products capable of better fuel level indication? Very likely true. Would I use his senders if I needed to replace one of mine? Likely, it the price differential was not too great. Would I pull my senders to put his in? No. Would the widespread use of his products prevent some crash/death? Maybe somewhere, sometime. But; they won’t keep pilots from doing stupid things or using poor judgment; they won’t cure the deficiencies in the gauge itself; they won’t prevent the loss of fuel from leaks, improper fuel cap seating, etc. Perhaps all these things are what he is trying to convey, but again, the tenor of his posts goes far beyond this. Just my opinions. Worth what you paid for them.

In my opinion, this is perfectly normal for the Continental engine. In the yellow in cruise would really get my attention, but taxi and idle is perfectly alright. This is from what I have read, folks I have talked to and my experience. I don't issue guarantees and I'm not an expert.

You can't go wrong with Parker Woodruff, Mike Elliott, or (if you can stand the travel expense), Don Kaye. You can undoubtedly find someone close by who will satisfy the insurance company, but in my opinion, it is well worth the extra expense of getting a real Mooney expert to get you started off properly flying your new Mooney.

Commercial or IR first (Will do both)?
DonMuncy replied to Trailboss's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
IMHO the commercial ticket is mildly helpful, and the instrument rating has a value of about 15 on a 1 to 10 scale. Unfortunately, the effort to achieve them is proportional.- 19 replies

Beta Testers needed for new iPad GA app
DonMuncy replied to compilotrc's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Exactly how does this work? What does the Bluetooth receiver attach to? Does it require hardwiring to the audio panel? Do you have to program the IPad to make audio output? Please bear in mind these questions are coming from someone whose knowledge of Bluetooth (and most other high-tech stuff) is virtually non existent. -
I think some missed my emoji.
