  1. Will never gave me a hard altitude on the power reduction. I have over 100hrs in the Piper Seminole and 500’ is the alitutude to set climb power so I just carried that over to the Ovation. Will did want to see a power reduction to the 24” early in the climb as per the POH he stated. In my experience, which is mostly jets, doesn't really cover the Ovation. Standard jet TO profile is max or reduced TO power, second segment climb is V2 +10 - at 1,000 AFE lower the nose to V2 +20 start cleaning up the flaps. Flaps 0, climb power, climb checklist. I like the idea of leaving the Ovation at full throttle all the way to cruise watching CHT and EGT in the climb. Just wanted to make sure there was no penalty to be paid for doing that.
  2. I never found an altitude reference for setting the recommended reduced climb power of 24” 2500 RPM from full power on takeoff. At 500’ AFE I accelerate to cruise climb 120kts from VY 105 kts and pull the MP back. Is this common practice at this altitude?
  3. My guess is that was a failure of the CSD (Constant Speed Drive aka gear accessory drive). N1 is still spinning and appears all blades are present. If I remember correctly the CSD cases are made out of magnesium and can burn. I’m not a mechanic and never flew the 777. Just a guess. We had a CSD fire once on a DC8 on takeoff before V1. Burned for a while even after the fire department doused it. Water makes magnesium fires worse by releasing hydrogen gas.
  4. Don/Steve... I’m going to pay homage and design my panel layout as you guys did with your original G500/600 layouts. Well done!
  5. Just found a pic doing a google search of the G500/600 with the PFD centered in a Mooney. So it looks like it can be done. Does this plane belong to anyone here? Obviously this pilot had the same thought process as me.
  6. I have noticed that many of the panel renovations have a PFD that is not centered on the yoke especially with the large displays that also displayed LNAV, approach charts, engine instruments etc. I’ve never flown with a PFD that wasn’t centered. I’m renovating my panel and don’t know how I’d like an uncentered PFD. I purchased a used G600 and have seen panels with a left side PFD centered on the yoke and I’ve seen panels where the actual panel was centered right on the split... PFD to the left of the yoke and MFD to the right. Is it going to be weird having the PFD off center? Will I get used to it? Any experiences to share?
  7. What model Mooney?
  8. Will Wobbe is in VA but travels. 713.249.7351 I use him for my Ovation training and ICC and have no regrets.
  9. The guys and gals on this message board are indispensable assets to the Mooney community! Without this place we’re just guys with planes! I found the same generous help when I was looking for my Ovation 2 this past summer. Welcome Ovation brotha from anotha motha!
  10. So is the problem aesthetic or an engine alignment issue? No one has pointed out anything that says there is something incorrect about the alignment. Hoping for some clarification.
  11. I agree with Fly_M20R’s style. No need to rush things. Throttle inputs should be smooth and controlled. Throttle is sensitive. 280hp (or 310) is formidable.
  12. Sailors and ships rot in port!
  13. Even when buying goes smoothly it’s still quite a headache logistically, mentally, and financially!
  14. That plane has been for sale since I started looking for an Ovation in June! There has to be a good reason it hasn’t sold.
  15. Pilots are an unaccepting bunch of perfectionists. The Ovation spinner does not line up with the top of the cowl. That’s how it is. Verified by Brian Kendrick in January when I inquired. Learn to live with it. I have! Sort of! Maybe one day!
  16. You using ForeFlight? ForeFlight has its own checklist for the M20R. You can also modify it. Don’t forget checklists for added equipment like autopilots, TKS and other installed equipment.
  17. Need to know the master orifice number recorded that day for cylinder compression relevance. What were the other cylinder compressions? Could be a ring not expanding correctly due to carbon buildup. Could be a leaking valve. Leak down test will help you find the culprit.
  18. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had was at TJ Highlands steak house in OSH. Im a steak guy and try to make it a point to find a great steak house everywhere I fly. TJ’s has a legit dry aged ribeye that was out of this world. Lobster bisque was amazing too. Creamed spinach was a 10! Great meal and I’m not easily impressed. Went there 2 nights in a row and ordered the same. Going from NY out west in the fall. Going to stop in OSH for fuel and a steak dinner. OSH is popular with the aviation crowd. Don’t miss it! https://tjshighlandsteakhouse.com/
  19. King has an online course on the G1000. POH for systems and limitations. One of the MS recommended instructors to do your insurance required minimum flight time. I made up my own Ovation flight profiles from the POH info.
  20. Try Sebastian... X26. Housing is affordable. $225k can get you a nice recently built house. It’s on the water for diving/fishing. Nice small town. Airports in the area include X26, VRB, MLB.
  21. Great story! Just to add.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferguson_v._NTSB
  22. I live near a now defunct AFB. Plattsburgh. There used to be an airport named Clinton County about 3 mi away. An F111 pilot landed at Clinton county instead of the AFB. He got out and walked down the street to use a pay phone to call the AFB and tell them where he was. He said he thought the runway looked a little short. They had to take the wings off and tow it back to the AFB. It happens to the best. Good practices aren’t something you will always find in a manual but everything found in a manual are good practices which are there because of someone else’s mistakes. Doesn’t matter what you fly. I don’t want to become a cautionary tale.
  23. Airline pilots have a much better track record of getting it right vs. GA pilots. Just saying there might be something to be learned there. Past history of performance is NOT indicative of future performance. Trying to eliminate as many variables as possible makes for a safer flight. Carry on doing it your way... it seems to work until it doesn’t.
  24. Marvin Toepfer CFI/CFII is in MLB. Not quite sure what Mooney models he has experience in. I think Bravo and Ovation if I remember correctly. I’ll PM you his number. You guys can figure it out!
