  1. Agree with everything you said. I adore my aspen and it will track any turn even with my old 430w. However, with the Garmin PFD and the Sandia or L3 you could get rid of the airspeed, altimeter, altitude preselect, and G5. The GAD controller can integrate the AP to everything else. So yes, the pocket book would be 10-15 amu lighter but the results would be streamlined and efficient.
  2. Not sure I’d want to give up a square inch of that gorgeous display for something as simple as engine instruments. With a JPI 900 / L3 500 / 500 txi / 750 setup you would have the best combo available. Do I think the 20k AP is reasonable after you already have the 750 and 500 txi HELL NO.
  3. I think so, it’s on the master list at home - the one or two people at each company that can get the job done not just waste my time. Edit: the fact that I don’t have the list on my phone probably means I’m not on the short list for IT or data management where I work
  4. I went with the alpha inertial reel system on the pilots side and I’m fairly happy with it. Cheapest source is probably eBay when they have the 8-10 percent ebucks. I tried to ask for a discount going direct with the company but it was a huge hassle and I only saved a few dollars.
  5. From talking with JPI on the phone and at airventure the owner is attentive and CS oriented. I also found one person that really knows his stuff, the “motor head” of the company, but I’m drawing a blank on his name.
  6. I think it’s the added drag / reduced glide (extra blade) that act like a speed brake and require more power to keep the same descent rate? @Txbyker Did you try any higher rpm runs 2550 in cruise or 2700 in climb out?
  7. The 2.5 amu Sandia is a primary backup, only slightly more than the g5.
  8. Don’t let my wife hear this! I use the old equipment sales tactic for all of my discretionary upgrade purchases. It helps make the numbers “work out”.
  9. I have the proper sensor installed but the 830 displays the temp as IAT vs CRB. Would changing the wires/pins (to CRB) provide additional information ie warnings if the temp fell into the icing range?
  10. @pkofman another option is look for a nice used 540 that would be a slide in replacement. Probably a $4k upgrade but you’ll save $1k by not needing a fs210.
  11. I did not read the OP’s post closely enough. Thought the plan was to keep the 12d in the com 2 position for good and just use a 155 et al for a short term fix to be replaced with a gps/nav/com. If you are keeping and sliding to position 2 I’d say a nice sl30 would be perfect.
  12. You should be able to find a nice non-waas gns 400 for around 3-3.5 amu. Have the installer wire the rack for for the 440 which will be a slide in installation when the funds allow. IMO anything else is a waste of install money. Yes I would recommend buying a used 155 or gx60 to replace a broken unit but never for a fresh install. My attitude has always been live with something until you can afford to fix/do it right, don’t give it a half effort.
  13. I don’t bounce it... ...on every single landing. Just those where bystanders, controllers, or passengers are watching.
  14. Probably just one of many reasons why aircraft wheels/tires are small diameter units.
  15. @carusoam Is it necessary to tap the brakes on a C? How can you tell the aux pump is on for the m20r?
  16. I’m a fairly new pilot but find it is much easier to bring up the gear well before the end of the runway. My reasoning is I can put the gear down very quickly, it is a lot more difficult to retract the gear at higher speeds where engine cooling is optimal, and it is one less thing to worry about later when things get busy.
  17. Already have one and really like it but I’ll be watching for your thread to explore new ways to spend money.
  18. Put the wife to work?
  19. This is a great idea. However, I would use the 900 installation manual to install all the probes unless they are identical. Might save some time later on.
  20. Problem is when you upgrade the $2500 830 turns into a $500 core. Not really an upgrade path IMO.
  21. I think ~2 amu for parts and labor. Might be a little cheaper if you have a cheaper mechanic.
  22. When I talked with them at Oshkosh they said the STC install was not flexible. Everything needs to be installed and partial installs would not be covered. They expected the AP install variances to slow up the approval process because of so many slight differences in mounting brackets etc. Why not install all the sensors and hook up a cheap indicator like an older JPI to buy some time? skyview and CB status, I think you’re dreaming:)
  23. I agree with the response from @carusoam In my case if I got 200 hrs of complex and an IR it would save enough premium to pay for 5 rental hours. I would fly your 182 as much as possible and continue the IR. Personally I would not rent Mooney time at this point. Just find a good instructor when you purchase.
  24. The scary thing is when you start to think, that’s not so bad. Not surprising that a new aircraft can be 400-800k when a single switch can run 500.
  25. If you are thinking about not putting in a gps/nav/com to save money I would definitely put in a cheap used 700 system in the ec-1 spot and save every penny for a more important upgrade. A jpi 900 would get you half way to a waas setup that would actually add value / capability to the plane.
