  1. I really appreciate all the comments. However, what it really boils down to is this guy... I’m planning on putting 100 hrs on the plane to shake out both the pilot and plane before I take him up. However, the common failure items I want to have inspected no matter how expensive it is.
  2. I thought you insured it for 150% of what you paid? That should help a little for all the upgrades and time you put in it. But I agree it’s painful to put money into an item and not get reimbursed.
  3. A G5 HSI only install is fine. You could do a two G5 install and just move your current AI to a standby location where it can continue outputting AI info to the AP.
  4. Over the last couple of days I’ve really started to think about engine failures. Being a fairly low time pilot I hope to gain a lot more experience before I have to deal with one. I’m wondering if there is any info on when failures occur? I would think takeoff and climb would be a lot higher probability per hour especially when looking at the short duration. Also what component failures cause an immediate loss of power? I’m thinking a lot of items could be inspected. What percentage of failures are internal (split the cases to inspect) surprises?
  5. Hard to believe I’ll burn through that in a little over 300 hrs. I really need to bike to work to offset my LL usage.
  6. Flew in the Sunday before!
  7. Greetings from SW Michigan. Nice looking plane!
  8. @Marauder good info about the discrepancy between filling a leveled plane and one that is on the ramp. Did you evenly space out the calibration points? Did you fine the results linear with reference to both individual sensors and the crossover between them?
  9. Wow, that picture really show how much of an urban environment it was! Skill and a little luck. The conversation in the background “mom why is there a plane in your parking spot?”
  10. Looks like I need to pick up a TBM, I’ll talk to the wife.
  11. This is a large consideration because I have family with that size aircraft. Might be a little too heavy for turf. Also this will be a extended weekend retreat where I might be pushing hard to get back and forth. Might be less stressful for a reasonable length paved runway with the family on board.
  12. I really like this unit but I’m not sure if it’s a legal option without a battery backup when used as the sole AI.
  13. Agree but there is a pretty big price gap between 3k and 25k, especially on an older plane.
  14. Do you have a shotgun panel or a standard T? The G5 will make the scan a little easier if you have a shotgun setup.
  15. The general consensus is Garmin will certify the g3x like they did on the g5.
  16. I stopped by the booth at Oshkosh as well. It’s amazing how bright the led have gotten. Accidentally looked into one of the displays pointing at the ceiling, big mistake! Also I think some of the personnel at the vendor shows get a little tired of answering the same questions all day/week. However, normally the ones least personable actually know the products the best. If I want a pretty face and a smile I’ll shop with my wife in Chicago, I’d rather have someone knowledgeable.
  17. I think you would be a lot better off using the plane as a ski to dissipate energy vs a wheel that could dig in. It’s one thing with tundra tires but with the small tires and higher speeds I would be a huge risk.
  18. I wonder if you could set it up as a duplex? Two individuals could split the cost and build a slightly larger hanger that could fit two planes.
  19. Roger that, I’m glad he’s ok! I’m sure he doesn’t have time to waste online right now.
  20. Looks like I need to decide if grass runways are an option I’m willing to consider. I would think a 2500-3000 foot strip should be more than enough for my C. However, with hot temperatures and wet softer ground it might use a high percentage of it.
  21. I have a feeling he was renting the plane out. They talk about two college age people in the plane and I got the feeling that chrixxer was a little older. Glad nobody on the ground was hurt and the pilot did a great job putting it down.
  22. The last few responses describe what I’m looking for. Just enough living quarters to be comfortable in. If we have a lot of friends over I’ll put a sleeping bag out and sleep in the hanger. This will be a second “getaway” home not planning on moving. Expensive ish property is ok but a hanger / apartment, condo, or small home would be ideal.
  23. I agree but in this situation I wonder if by the time he realized he had a serious problem if he would be too low.
  24. Not an ideal landing location...he did a good job! I’m curious what failed but glad he had his new radio in place for the emergency call.
  25. Very nice!
