  1. I don’t agree. Just as many 750’s have been listed in the past week on BT as in the past two years. The xi sales will help depress the gtn and gns market which will also pull down the ifd market slightly. Not because they are old, slow, dirty, clunky, blurry, dangerous, or stale. The only reason is supply and demand. Proof? I personally am not lookin to sell my 430w...but strongly considering putting up a 750 for sale depending on current market value in a month.
  2. Sounds like you need a new thread trying to convince owners to blow out their old junk 650’s...
  3. I’d drop the stack and put it on top. It’ll fit the black piece is just a filler.
  4. That’s the interesting thing to me. It looks like the new unit is not compatible with the gfc500. It wouldn’t surprise me if the outputs are similar to the txi and even the optional battery might be the external unit (like the 7 inch txi).
  5. This will absolutely kill the ki300...actually kinda sad about that.
  6. The dealer webinar mentioned being a 256 replacement so it should cover a lot of the Mooney base.
  7. This will be a great option for twin owners that want to keep their current AP’s going. My guess is it uses communication protocols that are similar to the txi so no gad 29b will be needed to interface with the navigator. This is the box everyone was clamoring for, it’ll be interesting if the price point (once the interface adapter or unlock is added) will scare some off.
  8. I wonder if this is going to use my brand new gad43 that has been collecting dust in my office. Might go from undesirable to a hot item...
  9. I normally look to see if Andy is working the big events (osh/s&f). He is a no BS, very knowledgeable rep that will be a perfect online resource. Thanks for coming over to MS!
  10. I’m curious what owners are willing to pay for this converter box. Garmin and aspen both have D/A boxes for the lateral navigation in the $700-$1k range. They also currently have boxes that output attitude info in the $3k range (only G500 and txi for Garmin). Are owners looking for a $1k, $2k, or a $3k converter box to work with the G5?
  11. Did you by chance fly during operation good cheer this year? A TKS acclaim (2SN) landed a few minutes before us this year, thought it might be a previous plane of yours.
  12. Going into a purchase budgeting for only minor squawks can give your CFO a false sense of security. I think if you ask owners who have cared for a long body over a decade you will find $25k a year is pretty average. At the beginning of the year 15k looks like a good estimate...at the end of the year you’re adding up over $25k worth of expenses.
  13. Shop charged almost 1 amu for labor alone to put in a 406 during the annual. I think you’re making a good decision.
  14. Im guessing the ea100 is the two way communication device that displays the FD. Probably can’t/wouldn’t want to have it on both the aspen and txi. However, for the g3x that only has highway in the sky (unless you’re using a gfc500) I don’t see the harm of having the aspen display the FD.
  15. I’m not sure what other backup instruments you have in the panel. If you have an altimeter and ASI I think the G5 is a good option. Many shops now accept that because it’s legal to replace an AI as primary and act as the sole backup for the 3gx and txi it’ll work. However, if you’re asking if the G5 can backup all three (AI,ASI, and altimeter) I’d say no, not for the Aspen.
  16. Thank you for the review. Your last statement is troubling to me as I’m trying to gather up some faith in the ki300.
  17. I know this has been about the gns series but the units really taking a hit from what I’ve seen are the older BK, Garmin, and other units. The staple BK hsi, dme, and adf units have also fallen to paperweight status.
  18. I forgot about the FD. This is a g3x and old auto pilot problem not necessary the chosen backup. I think Garmin sidestepped this limitation by providing the highway in the sky depiction which allows for the repositioning of the flight director AI from primary (a problem for a G5 installation). The question is can the aspen display the FD information without being required to provide the lateral navigation?
  19. No reason to do things twice. Just connect the ea100 to the AP and everything else via the g3x. Never touch the aspen again if you don't want to. I think it’s a good idea because you are always cross checking the AP. Main focus is on the g3x (if that’s your primary) and if the any AP component fails (including the aspen/ea100/ or 256) it will immediately get your attention. However, I’m pretty sure JohnB is using a gad43e so the aspen is acting as a backup only.
  20. I was planning on trying the new Gill sealed battery over the past two years. However, I’ve had terrible customer service with the company during this time. Running Concord now with good results and have NO plans of ever trying a Gill again. With 6 dead Gill batteries over a period of time with excellent care it’ll be interesting how the Concord compares over the next decade.
  21. To be honest we’ve been dragging our feet on the GFC upgrade since November. The 225 flys the plane so well it’s hard to spend the money to get the performance shown above. Finally planning on installing the new AP next month, I really hope Garmin gets their software tweaked before then.
  22. Curious if you used a max power climb where the extra upgraded HP helped in this situation or cruise RPM?
  23. If you’re looking at the ‘95 Ovation it’s only 100 miles from AGL. I’m sure the owner would be willing to fly it over if you put down a 10% deposit. Longer distances might cause the owner to expect you to pay travel expenses. Just depends on the seller.
  24. I think there are a lot of owners who are going to eventually upgrade their current 640/750 to the xi version. That will put a good supply of used units (with new install kits) on the market. Not many of these units have come up for sale recently so it’ll be interesting what pressures it places on the gns series. That along with the cheaper 175/355/375 will put a lot of pressure on 440/540 sales (new, not slide in installs). I personally think Garmin with its buying power will continue to support the gns series for a long time. Even if they spec out an internal replacement kit that replaces everything but the display/case using newer (cheaper) processors etc. With 130k units there would be no problem finding a vendor to make whatever they desire. By keeping it repair based they don’t have to worry about the price downward spiral to compete with their other offerings.
