  1. For what it's worth, these apps are surprisingly accurate, and nice peace of mind if your tach goes inop during a flight... Well worth having one around. (The Android one is free.. the iOS one is kind of expensive, but works equally well.) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.javiery.rpmgauge https://apps.apple.com/us/app/engine-rpm/id340401811
  2. My impression was that they had crashed the gate at the base - probably one of those wooden bar things. They were both high on meth, and the driver had above-overdose levels, so the thinking was that he may have swallowed a bag before driving so the police wouldn't get it. In any case, they probably would have been hard to stop with anything less than a physical barrier. Kind of surprising that they didn't have a more serious physical barrier - even one of those pointy stop strip things - at the entrance. But since they were crazy high on drugs, they may have just driven straight through a perimeter fence. Dunno. In any case, both the driver and passenger died after hitting the F18.
  3. Well, the other thread was nominally about Aeroshell pricing, and I'm specifically interested to know whether folks are going to be switching to the multiweight Victory oil - and why.
  4. If you could buy oil that comes with the Camguard additive, I'd be far more interested than I am in buying a separate bottle and mixing it myself. But I understand that a lot of people like it. For me, being able to buy a spare quart at an FBO on the road is a concern, and I don't want to stress about adding Camguard. Even if it's objectively better than oil with the Lycoming additive premixed.
  5. I was a user of Exxon Elite for many years, now using Aeroshell 15w50. Never liked Phillips XC because I didn't want to fiddle with an additive to get anticorrosion. But a petroleum multiweight with the Lycoming additive built-in is very intriguing. Not trying to beat the long-dead oil vs oil horse, but I'm definitely interested in arguments for switching to the multiweight Victory oil. (I'm assuming that this oil will have XC-level availability, which means basically every FBO on the planet - a great argument by itself.) https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/phillips-introduces-new-multi-weight-oil/
  6. AP coverage of the same warning: https://www.apnews.com/6219f26c3ea145b6b29b5e69115504a9 ... And the warning itself, from the CISA, courtesy of some security firm called Rapid7 ... https://www.us-cert.gov/ics/alerts/ics-alert-19-211-01

  8. For everyone who loves working with BendixKing for sales and support, and loves TruTrak products - it's a match made in heaven But seriously, this is not surprising.
  9. I think it was an Antonov, but still.
  10. SL92-1_SN24_1686-2999.pdf Granted you already know that your aircraft is not eligible, I thought maybe the document would add something to the discussion..
  11. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that for the relevant serial number range, this is *not* an STC. The 2900# gross weight is part of the a/c type certificate. Some of the late J models benefit from the higher gross weight that became available for the MSE.
  12. That might be even more obvious than something on the nose gear - though I really would like something that they are forced to remove before they can hook up a tow bar. This might be a great opportunity for an enterprising MSer to make tens of dollars
  13. The little stickers are a good idea. I haven't seen the AOPA cards before - the Vistaprint link from that article doesn't seem to work (or I'm doing it wrong). I still wish someone would make a "remove-before-flight" thing that sticks in the nose gear towbar holes with a giant warning about exceeding the turn limits. Unless I actually know the line personnel, I have zero confidence that anything communicated to person #1 will make it to person #5 who tows the plane. And honestly, I just don't want someone to break the plane - having evidence to use for the future lawsuit slash insurance claim is about 1% as good as avoiding the damage in the first place.
  14. I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV, but my understanding is that this is the opposite of normal recommendations. When you aren't hearing the high frequencies, you aren't stimulating the nerves that process these frequencies, and the nerves die or the neural pathway becomes non functional or something. The stimulation is key. So amplifying the signal prevents the neural effects (which are actually the unrecoverable bit).
  15. Pretty decent brief from AOPA on this. https://www.aopa.org/advocacy/advocacy-briefs/air-traffic-services-brief-use-of-gps-in-lieu-of-dme-adf
  16. That's much closer to what I had expected.
  17. Understood. I'll PM you for some more info. The quote I've been looking at is upwards of $35k for a G3X with a single 10" display, EIS, and an attitude G5 backup.
  18. I keep hearing murmurs (on MS and elsewhere) about Garmin eliminating the need for a G5 in aircraft with suitably-equipped G3X gear. I've been very curious whether we'll see any announcements at Oshkosh.
  19. My quote was for a G3X with EIS, and I've been thinking along the same lines - go with a standalone primary engine display from another vendor. No idea whether that will actually affect the cost in a helpful way.
  20. Interesting. That's not too far off the delta I got in an estimate for a G3X with/without the AP. But I'm not actually sure about the G5, since I was going to have G5 installed as backup even if the AP didn't go in. I've gotten very gunshy about the whole thing, when I realized I was talking about the price of a decent F model for installing a new autopilot and a couple of LCDs.
  21. So you currently have a G3X touch and you're adding one G5 and the GFC500 three-servo for about $17k all-in? That sounds awfully good to me.
  22. I have definitely encountered an assumption that the shop would keep the removed equipment, but I've never had any pushback when I said I wanted to keep it. Probably worth just asking them about it.
  23. I have always used DuPage. It's a great airport with friendly folks and far enough from O'Hare to avoid congestion. My only complaint with DuPage is that I haven't found a good transportation option into the city. I end up renting a car and then having to find a place to park it. Sounds like Schaumburg could be a good alternative if there's a train station nearby.
  24. I think that you'll want to PM @mooniac58
  25. This question will probably depend a lot on hull value and coverage limits. @Parker_Woodruff is the local expert.
