  1. Yeah, maybe. But I see references to the GFC500 all over the place. If it were an experimental feature, I would expect references to experimental autopilots. Here's a quote from the Sporty's review: "There are still more options for connecting to panel-mount avionics. You can find and upload frequencies to a GTR 200/225 COM radio (using an optional power/data cable), send VFR route guidance to G3X and GFC 500 autopilots, and upload/download fight plans wirelessly to FlightStream 210/510 devices. In short, if you have a panel full of Garmin avionics, the aera 760 will play very well with it." (Emphasis mine.) But so it's a VFR nav source for a certified autopilot. Sounds at least potentially useful in a very narrow emergency, where you've lost other nav sources but still have power to your GFC500. Anyway, it's something I've never seen before in a handheld. 2. The integrated AHRS is a significant differentiating factor from other portable units that require an external attitude source. If you lose everything else, you've still got nav and attitude on a self-contained battery-powered unit. But if it isn't reliable, then that's worse than not having it.
  3. The FAA publications really are underrated. They're quite good, and ultimately they're the source material (at least in part) for all of the expensive third-party test prep courses.
  4. The one thing that remains murky for me about the 760 is its alleged ability to drive a GFC500 ... I've seen references to this in Garmin marketing materials, but I don't have any clear understanding of how this would work (or whether there is some sort of reversionary capability if a G5 dies). Any insights on the AP integration stuff? (I always assumed that this was a throwback to an experimental setup where your primary flight display and AP controller might be a handheld, but that doesn't seem particularly relevant to a certified aircraft.)
  5. Is this available online somewhere? I have no Bonanza connections, but sounds interesting.
  6. I don't understand why an insurance company would reject a BasicMed applicant. I've heard little to suggest that a third class physical is more comprehensive than a BasicMed physical. What's the deal?
  7. Welcome back, Jonny! Glad to hear the factory is back to 100%. Hopefully 197CV can find a home among the MS faithful
  8. His Mooney transition instructor also had very positive things to say about his abilities. Videos are hard to watch. The FBO said he did an extended preflight, which may be because he was uncomfortable with the workflow on a new-to-him airplane. In any case, I didn't see anything in the NTSB files to suggest a "turn the key and go" departure. Any of us could forget one thing at the end of a long day... accidentally skipping an item in an otherwise thorough preflight. Yuck.
  9. Is 300ft more likely? Or is initial takeoff roll more likely? (I have no idea.) If your seat is going to fly back when you advance power, then pulling the throttle means you slow to a stop on the runway (or roll into the grass, or hit a runway light, whatever). That seems better than getting airborne. But you're clearly right - if this happens at 300' then it's going to be unpleasant.
  10. I've wondered about some sort of strap that you would loop around your hand and around the throttle - as part of your pre-takeoff checklist, you put your hand through the strap, and if your seat goes rocketing back, your arm automatically retards the throttle. Has someone already made one of these?
  11. Re pilot experience.. it's worth noting that you aren't required to provide flight hours on a medical application. It's entirely possible that he copied the 180 hours from his private 8710, and left all other values blank.
  12. A BFR no longer exists - everything is a flight review these days. ac_61-98c.pdf
  13. I have a named insured pilot on my Piper policy who will be 81 this year and on BasicMed. I was really nervous about getting the dreaded phone call from the insurance company, but the phone call never came. Seems to be a complete non-issue. This is with Global Aero. The best advice I've heard is to stick with the same company after turning 80, and so far that has seemed like sound advice.
  14. I've never seen this before, but based on the buttons and labels I'm going with "it's a timer."
  15. Presumably Harry Moyer .. https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2020/november/05/flying-tigers-vet-flies-solo-to-celebrate-his-100th-birthday
  16. Yep, that's why MS raised an eyebrow about the new forums and blog. Seemed like a strange use of resources at a critical time.
  17. I signed up with my MS username for continuity purposes, and about 24 hours later they sent me an email saying I couldn't use that username, my account had been deleted, and I could sign up again using a different name. Haven't signed in again.
  18. Anyone know what happened to Tracy Ball's efforts to get her father's book back in print? I'd love to be able to purchase a new copy of this. https://mooneyspace.com/topic/17714-reprinting-those-remarkable-mooneys-book/ @Tracy Ball
  19. Yeah I run it almost exclusively from a desktop/laptop. The interface is a little bit hard to navigate on a small screen.
  20. Yep, it's been my favorite weather app for the past couple of years. If I'm on a trip and there is anything but clear blue skies, I'm watching Windy constantly to see how the weather looks for the trip home. I've used it to leave a day early, a day late, and to buy a Southwest ticket
  21. Doesn't look like an Eclipse at all... Looks like a standard Cirrus Vision.
  22. Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but I'd recommend going beyond Controller and TaP for your search. It's a seller's market, and those apps are pretty popular - chances are good that the seller will have been contacted by other buyers before you're even aware of the listing. Barnstormers is a mess of a website, but I'd start there. You can set up automated alerts for listings that match your search terms. I'd also keep an eye on the bulletin boards and local FBOs (I mean the actual physical bulletin boards with actual thumbtacks). You might even put up a "wanted" sign at airports you frequent. There's no doubt that you can find good planes on Controller and TaP, but you're also likely to pay top dollar given the eyeballs and competition.
  23. Oh.. one other thing. I put duct tape all the way around the spinner with the sticky side forward. So you can rub the cowl against the spinner if needed without scratching anything.
  24. One more data point... I use a nylon strap (link below) and remove everything. Then I get myself under the cowl and just pop the clasp and the cowl falls down. It's easier than trying to reach camlocks while under the plane, and arguably less fiddly than trying to unhook a bungee. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BSJVW59
