  1. Just looks like a Mooney to me
  2. Sounds like a good idea. My insurance company said they treat BasicMed as a 3d class medical for all policy purposes. PCPs probably have the same availability problems as AMEs during C19, and I doubt that many would do a BasicMed signoff via telemedicine. But still.
  3. I hate to ask..
  4. Best guess is that this is served from an ad network, not an individual MS sponsor. They might be targeting 'aviation' or whatever.
  5. My understanding from FBO folks is that their prices lag way behind the auto pumps because they buy in bulk, and don't do enough 100LL volume to take quick advantage of price breaks. They're always paranoid about buying too much when the market is moving rapidly, but also paranoid about losing out on a deal. I suspect that av pump prices will come down in a month or so if oil prices stay crazy low.
  6. I'm curious how much real benefit this has. If an insurance policy requires the pilot to meet regs for currency and medical certification, and the FAA has agreed not to enforce, you're still violating the regs. Same thing for professional pilots with flight department policies requiring currency. How does the enforcement forbearance help? Maybe an examiner will allow a couple-months-out-of-date knowledge test?
  7. It really was me saying, "what are things that I probably can't do in the middle of a quarantine?" And thinking about getting a haircut, and then... um... Flowbee.
  8. Wow, that's a pretty impressive rental fleet. Wonder if these are all leasebacks?
  9. I can confirm that the behavior is identical with the cheap watch. My non-cellular model causes noticeable compass effect, almost equal to a tablet at the same range. Eek. Fortunately I wear my watch on my left wrist and it's almost never near the compass, but still.
  10. Having a launch window several days wide is a real gift. It it were me, I'd be watching Windy like a hawk to see how things develop. I normally pick what I think is the ideal departure time given the weather, a secondary departure time as a backup, and I work out what happens if neither of those is possible. Pre-purchasing a refundable airline ticket (SWA) is a great tertiary plan, and I've even been known to pre-book multiple one-way rental cars from possible "outs" along the route just in case. (Note this assumes normal travel options - in these Covid-19 days, I think I'd choose two departure times based on forecast+Windy, and my tertiary would be canceling the trip.)
  11. This topic just *barely* qualified for the "miscellaneous" forum Today I typed "Flowbee" into Google (don't judge), and on the home page of their circa-1992 website, they proclaim that the Flowbee is made in Kerrville, Texas. I don't know where I expected Flowbees to be made, and I guess I'm surprised that Flowbees are made at all, but the fact that they are headquartered in the same 20,000-person town as Mooney Intl was surprising to me. https://www.flowbee.com/index.html
  12. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that Airplane Ownership Volume 1 just became available for free to Kindle Unlimited subscribers. I just downloaded it today. Not sure whether or when Volume 2 will show up - but if you've got Unlimited, the price is right
  13. This is the kind of thing that was really easy on the old VOR-based RNAV computers. You punched in the VOR frequency, radial, and offset, and it created a temporary waypoint as part of a flight plan. 006-08307-0004_4.pdf
  14. Interesting. I wear an A-Watch too, but my left hand is almost always on the yoke or in my lap, and it never occurred to me that that was close enough to cause interference. I'm going to test this on my next flight and see if it does the same thing for me...
  15. I'm not sure if there's a good way to mitigate this, but I've definitely seen it with phones and tablets in the cockpit. I try to keep them as far away from the whiskey compass as possible. Metal-bodied devices seem worse than plastic, but all have some effect.
  16. I don't know whether this adds any value to the conversation, but I've learned to take FA data for approach/landing with a grain of salt. When an aircraft is near the ground, it can get pretty sketchy. I've seen perfectly normal approaches that show bizarrely low speeds or bizarrely high vertical speeds. I think that FA uses the raw data and tries to interpolate from infrequent ADS-B pings. E.g., tower asks the plane to do a 360 for spacing, FA shows some weird heading changes but paints a straight line with a 30kt speed. The FA depiction of this flight might be perfectly accurate, but it might also be making some assumptions based on limited data.
  17. Yep. I leave the adapter plugged into my handheld, so I just unplug my headset from the panel and plug it into the adapter. The whole process takes about 30 seconds.
  18. I won't fly without one. I change the batteries once a year on a schedule, and mine is always within arm's reach. I have had a few complete electrical failures in my flying career, and I've done them both with and without a handheld. The "with a handheld" is much nicer. I've never used the nav function for anything, but you'd be surprised how far out you can reach a tower - even with the little whip antenna.
  19. Yeah, Garmin likely bought fltplan for the relationships with corporate flight departments. You've got to think that they want fltplan.com to go away as soon as possible. I don't think they've even added any Garmin branding to the site or the app. ETA: Okay, it does say "a Garmin company"
  20. The issue here I think is that Jeppesen is discontinuing FliteStar, and the AOPA app is just a rebranded FliteStar with fewer features. I was a FliteStar subscriber a million years ago, and I was super excited when AOPA started offering free access to members. I immediately switched to the AOPA product and was completely happy with it. Long since surpassed in functionality by other flight planning apps, but at the time it was awesome. 21. I'll defer to people who know way more about this than I do, but if you have a tach generator with a panel indicator (rather than a mechanical tach), it may be an electrical issue. In my case, the shop spent an AMU worth of time investigating the problem and it turned out to be a loose connection at or near the ignition switch. It took about 60 seconds to tighten and the indicator problem has not been seen in years.
  22. I just happened to see a new Kansas City MSC on the Mooney website. There hasn't been a MSC in Kansas City in the past ten years or so (Signature TechnicAir used to be a MSC). Fascinating. 41 - R&D American Aviation LLC Richard White (Maintenance) Address 2751 NE Douglas STE B Lee's Summit, Missouri 64064 United States Phone: 816.588.2807
  23. Nope, it's a tach meter. The FM calls it an "hour meter" but it's tach time.
