Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Hi gang, Anyone willing/able to send me their M20R_Ovation2GX.ace file? My O3 is in for the WAAS and ADSB upgrade so I anticipate having the checklist capability soon. I have the Garmin editor but retyping the entire checklist into their format seems like a bit of a project so I'm hoping to get a head start by using someone else's template. Thanks in advance! Robert

Thanks for setting me straight on that

I could have sworn that I read last year that Garmin no longer supports the 430 and 530. However, that is a recollection and not based on a serious inquiry on my part.
-
It's been a while since I analyzed it, but the reason I dropped the idea was that unless you fly a LOT you don't rack up enough points/discounts on a specific card to make it worthwhile. Seems like most airports I fly to have a different vendor. While the annual total fuel bill might be enough it isn't (for me) when I spread it across airboss/uvair etc.

Classic Premier. Go to the listing and notice at least one picture is not from the airplane that is for sale? Also very careful not to mention that this (apparently) is a non-WAAS Acclaim? Caveat Emptor when you deal with them; buyers are likely to get a better and more honest treatment from Jimmy Garrison at All American. Great looking plane though, bound to make someone very happy

Tach Time Ovation 2 with G530/430
Robert C. replied to redraider's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
Hi Grant, To the best of my knowledge the back wall Tach Time is the only one we have. I have that one and an EI that came with the STC/310HP upgrade and it shows the same number. Robert -
Tornado hits KHKY Monday afternoon 10.23.2017
Robert C. replied to Bob_Belville's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Oh wow! We stopped there for lunch on the way to the Mooney Summit and on the way back we overnighted in town. Happy memories of both stops and very sorry to see the damage and the pain and suffering that implies. Fun diner and very nice FBO. Hope all the folks are OK and can recover quickly. We'll support them with our food, fuel and hotel dollars again next year for sure. Robert -
To Erik's point: I remember reading when I did my homework that the best performance increases show up the higher you get. It'll be interesting to see what you find at 11-15k ft.

Great Pirep Russ. And you're video skills are better than you give yourself credit for The MT was on my wishlist for this year but got bumped by the WAAS/ADS-B upgrade. We'll take another look at the finances next year around birthday time Robert

While I like (and use) the AWC forecast pages a lot, they do have shortcomings. Scott Denstaedt has commented numerous times on what they are (sadly he favors Beechtalk ). The main one: while very decent for stratus it doesn't really capture convective well at all. It can predict clear skies and you'll fly under/above/through cumulus all day long. Most of the SkewLogT apps and websites have route functions that give you a very good idea of convective as well as stratus. A funky site is GRAMET/Ogimet. Not the most intuitive and user friendly interface and It doesn't work when the RUC Soundings are being processed (i.e. evenings East Coast time) but when it works it gives a very nice route visualization of the weather you can expect at various altitudes. http://ogimet.com/display_gramet.php?lang=en&icao=KDXR_KASH&hini=02&tref=1508286034&hfin=04&fl=100&submit=submit (Look at the sidebar for Gramet Aero). Another site with route function is: http://www.skewt.aero/# and it seems to work 24/7 but is harder to interpret. Robert

FAA STC Spreadsheet - Filtered for Mooney
Robert C. replied to ShuRugal's topic in General Mooney Talk
Thank you! Maybe you can put this in the downloads section as well? That way you don't have to worry about maintaining the link. -
Well, as long as we’re spending your money G500 GTN750 GTN650 ES transponder to get ADSB-out/in Lynx or other small electric AI for backup now get rid of all the steam gauges and vacuum system, enjoy the clean panel and u/l gain. enjoy!

That is strange as it displays 2700rpm just fine on my G1000. However, my O3 also ha3 a 2nd mechanical tach which appears to be required as the G1000 is placarded for the Tach on the G1000 to be "advisory." Turns out to be convenient as the connections have gotten a bit loose this year and the G1000 tach bounces between 0 and overspeed My O3 goes into annual next week so I haven't bothered taking the cowling off and tightening the wires. The 310hp is way worth it. Don't skip it over something as silly as the extra dial!! Robert

and the FAA's contribution: I Will Survive! Do you have what it takes to survive a forced landing or aircraft accident? Little things can make a big difference in increasing your odds of a successful rescue. Have a look at our #FlySafe topic of the month flyer for October (https://1.usa.gov/2xOV2MU) which focuses on general aviation survival techniques. The article has a good list of items. During the Mooney Summit the topic of survival kits came up in 2 presentations. Dan noted that after the crash he couldn't find anything. It was distributed all over the plane and the countryside. If you're not wearing it, don't count on having it or finding it. Andrew and Dan both noted the importance of having PLBs and a strobe. Both noted having the rescue helicopter flying over them and not seeing them. A strobe would have been picked up and accelerated their rescues. Robert

I flew both, courtesy of kind strangers, before deciding on the O3 that I now own. 1) I'm 5'8'' and found the DA-40 quite comfortable and the views are amazing. Very ergonomic cockpit. 2) If I wanted to fly 145kts in a 4-seater I could have stayed in the Flying Club and rented the Dakota; now I go 175kt on fewer gph. Passengers haven't yet complained about the space in the back seats, but then again none of them were 6+ ft. 3) I had appr 150 hrs when I bought my Ovation and combined transition training with an accelerated IFR course. 10 days and 50 hrs from zero to hero :). The aircraft is much less of a handful than its reputation, but does demand you fly the numbers on approach. Once you drill it into your head that you must not have +2 kt for "insurance" you'll be fine 4) My O3 has a U/L of 906 lbs. Air Conditioner alone is 60 lbs of weight that may or may not matter to you. The tanks hold 102gl/612 lbs of fuel (96 gl usable) so that is well over 6 hrs which few people will want to do at a single sitting, so you can easily fly with less weight and more payload than the 300 lbs implied by the full fuel weight.. I have regretted plenty of things in my life, but choosing the Ovation over the DA-40 is not one of them! Note that a G1000 Ovation may or may not have been upgraded to WAAS. The upgraded ones are likely to trade above your budget. Probably the sweetest deal around is a "DX" model that has been upgraded with a G500 and a GTN-750 and engine monitor (or you can upgrade yourself). The DX has newer engine gauges and the lower dashboard/glareshield like the GX. My 1st choice would have been a DX but they are hard to find. Good luck! Robert

Mike, Ron, Alice, JoAnn, Becky...and everyone I'm forgetting.... What a great (and educational) event. Thank you! We look forward to the next one.....you all have set a high bar for Seth and Lee (no pressure guys ). I discovered on the way back that the FAA is aware of my (negligible) contribution to the aviation community and created some fixes that commensurately truncate my name. The alternative explanation is too political for a friendly Mooneyspace post (the blue circle is P40-Camp David). Thanks again, Robert

I flew home today (from KHKY-Hickory NC) and was given the same (original) route as you followed by a quite direct SAX-BREZY leg to get home to KDXR. Then after LURAY I got a call for revised route: present position direct LAAYK-IGN-KDXR. Yeah right, dog leg 50-odd miles North before heading south again to get to KDXR. So I cancelled IFR (which i needed to get out of KHKY) and went direct Par for the course in that part of the world it seems.

Well, guess I was the exception to the rule Shortly after takeoff I was given a vector to fly East (rather than 031 my DTK) so a King Air behind me could get away quicker and he promptly forgot about me. When I called to ask when I could get back on course he claimed he'd cleared me back on course 10 miles ago. Never heard it and never acknowledged it so that didn't make any sense! Anyway, great Summit @mike_elliott ! Look forward to next year. Robert

Only other bit of advice I can give is to always send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs for a full oil analysis. Think it is $25 and you get back a comprehensive trend report (if they have history on your engine) and a one paragraph analysis of what they find in the oil. Good luck! Robert

I'm affected, but as noted above, the AD calls for an initial inspection within 12 months and then annual inspections, so I'm not sure what the big deal is. I forwarded it to my AP-IA and he responded ".....I can talk for an hour on this subject, but nothing will change for you as all of this is performed at a Reliant annual anyway...." Robert

Thanks Jack and Steven. I know many satisfied comments from Islip clients (including the local flying club at KDXR which has Islip do all its avionics) and if they've done a few that gives them a clear edge over VIP (my current shop). So, Steven, I may end up taking you up on your offer I'll let you know via PM where this goes. Jack: I started using VIP because Precision Avionics was unable to fix a s/w glitch/upgrade to the G1000 software a few years ago. However, the key criterion right now is a shop that has actually done a few given that there are some twists and turns apparently Robert

Thanks Paul, I'll keep you posted. Robert

Thanks Paul and Anthony. Encouraging to hear that LV is doing several of these installations. How much of a waiting time/backlog did they have when you scheduled it? I'll call them this coming week. It's a good 2:30hr drive from home so a bit of a hassle for my wife unless I can persuade someone to give me a lift. Same holds for Islip even though it's a shorter flight.

Hi Gang, Need to get the ADS-B transponder installed and the G1000 WAAS upgrade package. As I understand it C&W is both a MSC and Garmin dealer. Can find very little info on them but what little I've seen is positive. Their website doesn't seem to work. Any feedback you are comfortable sharing. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Thx! Robert PS: also on the shortlist is VIP Avionics in Hartford and Islip Avionics (harder to get too logistically).
