Top End on Big Bore Continental (TSIO 550)
kmyfm20s replied to L. Trotter's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
I would find an excellent shop like Lycon to overhaul your existing cylinders. They can flow balance and match the pistons and make sure the valve are properly seated much better than new cylinders. You could also ask them about porting them. I had them do it when I overhauled the top end of my J. It was impressive, the engine will run very smooth! I think any reputable shop can replace an entire top end, they do it all the time. I would discuss your concern that Busch talks about in his articles with them before hand so they know. In an ideal world they would replace 3 cylinders at a time but that's time consuming. Just my thoughts. -
I love my panel lay out. I don't have to move my head at all in IMC. More redundancy than I know what to do with.

I thought I would share my report as well but I can't get my graphs up on my post. I'll try to edit latter when I can get on my PC.

PERCENT POWER IN CRUISE Measures your engine's power output during cruise flight. High power output for extended periods can contribute to reduced fuel efficiency, elevated CHT and reduced cylinder life. SAVVY SAYS... The median of your engine's power output during cruise flights is greater than 74% of the cohort, which will make you go fast, but at the cost of reduced cylinder longevity. SPEED IN CRUISE (K.) We use TAS if available, otherwise ground speed. Higher speed might be due to high power output, resulting in high CHT and reduced cylinder life. Or possibly operation at higher, more efficient altitudes. SAVVY SAYS... Your cruise speed is higher than average when compared with your cohort. FUEL EFFICIENCY (NM PER GAL.) Measures your aircraft's fuel efficiency during cruise flight. SAVVY SAYS... Your aircraft's fuel efficiency is average when compared to your cohort. MAXIMUM CHT DURING FLIGHT (DEG. F.) Measures the maximum CHT attained during each flight, most likely during climb phase. Prolonged periods of high CHT can contribute to reduced cylinder life. SAVVY SAYS... Outstanding! The maximum CHTs attained during your flights has been exceptionally low, with a median lower than 80% of the cohort. We think you can expect above-average longevity of your cylinders if you continue operating with your current power settings. Keep doing what you're doing! MAXIMUM CHT IN CRUISE (DEG. F.) Measures the maximum cylinder head temperature (CHT) during the cruise phase of flight, an indication of the stress placed on your engine's reciprocating components. High CHT correlates with reduced longevity of cylinder assemblies. SAVVY SAYS... Outstanding! Your cruise CHTs have been exceptionally low, with a median value lower than 71% of the cohort. We think you can expect above-average longevity of your cylinders if you continue operating with your current leaning procedures and/or power settings. Keep doing what you're doing! MAXIMIMUM CHT SPREAD IN CRUISE (DEG. F.) Measures the median temperature spread between your hottest and coolest cylinders at maximum CHT during cruise. The spread is an indication of mixture distribution and the adequacy of cooling airflow to all cylinders. SAVVY SAYS... The median value of the maximum CHT spread during cruise flights is higher than 52% of the cohort. OIL PRESSURE IN CRUISE (PSI) Measures the average oil pressures during cruise for your flights. SAVVY SAYS... Your average oil pressures during cruise have a median value in the mid-range of the cohort. Your oil pressures are in the normal range. OIL TEMPERATURE IN CRUISE Measures average oil temperature during cruise. SAVVY SAYS... The median of your average oil temperatures during cruise are about average when compared with the cohort. Your oil temperatures are in the normal range. MAXIMUM FUEL FLOW DURING FLIGHT Measures maximum fuel flow during flight, most likely during takeoff. Sufficient fuel flow is important for proper cylinder cooling during high power operations SAVVY SAYS... Your maximum fuel flow is higher than average when compared with your cohort. MAXIMUM RPM DURING FLIGHT Measures maximum rpm during flight, most likely during takeoff. Maximum permitted RPM is necessary for the engine to develop full rated power during takeoff and in initial climb. SAVVY SAYS... Your maximum RPM is higher than average when compared with your cohort. MAXIMUM MAP DURING FLIGHT Measures maximum manifold pressure during flight, most likely during takeoff. Sufficient MAP, not to exceed redline, is necessary for the engine to develop full rated power during takoff and initial climb SAVVY SAYS... Your maximum MP is higher than average when compared with your cohort. INACTIVITY PERIODS (DAYS) Measures the number of days your aircraft was inactive between flights. Inactivity can contribute to engine corrosion and reduced life of engine components. SAVVY SAYS... Your engine's inactivity is about average when compared to your cohort. Savvy recommends continuing to fly as frequently as possible

I'll take them if still available. PM sent. -
I agree with what you say Paul but in GA stastitics is experimental and acrobatic included? That is something I could never figure out.

She is cute but she needs to turn her Bose headset around:) -
All my problems with my Garmin stack where a result of the original installer(from previous owner)using generic coaxial connectors instead of Garmin connectors.

Seems very high for an engine that is already out. I known the mounts themselves are expensive. When my engine was out I don't think they charged labor to put the new mounts on. I would ask.

My first guess is the vernatham is stuck open and allowing the oil to free flow. I would verify that it is able to open and close properly with temperature and that there is no mechanical restriction preventing it from opening and closing when installed. I would also check the thermocouple for accuracy and if accurate try relocating it to one of the other location available for installation. Lastly but most improbable is to check that oil is actually flowing over the thermocoupler and not getting a passive reading from a stagnant pool of oil.

Anyone else fail the colorblind test?
kmyfm20s replied to Capitalist's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I have always felt the same way! Why didn't they make blue good and yellow bad. Everyone can tell the difference between those colors. -

I did the test and passed. I actually got a written waiver which is better than a SODA. I don't know how I got it but I did. If you can tell the difference between red and green on a traffic light you will not have a problem but don't fool yourself if you can because of position. The night restriction I never understood because as a really color blind person myself I find it much easier to distinguish between them at night. -
Ground transport ,what do you do?
kmyfm20s replied to thinwing's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
Mine was the earlier version of this one. It will fit through the door when you pull off the seat and battery pack but barley. It's kind of a puzzle that once you figure out you need to remember. If I put it through the passenger door most of the time a designer have a back seat out or put a cover over it. The bikes are expensive but are really reliable and fun to ride. One warning is they come with thin cheap tubes so you will want to replace them with heavy duty tubes. They have an aluminum and steel frame version. https://chargdelectricbikes.com/products/prodecotech-mariner-ld-v5f-folding-36v-200w-1-speed-electric-bicycle?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=googlepla&variant=28873956680 -

I agree, especially with what JC says below. Sounds about as risk free as any airplane purchase out there. -
Crownair is a Mooney service center in San Diego. They have always been fair to me on my annuals.

My current plane I have had its tanks resealed by the previous owner. If definitely eats away at the paint!

Looks great!

Personally I'm not that fond of any of today's airplane paint jobs. There is nothing timeless about them and they all look like offshore racing boats. The only thing that I like enough or better than my plain Eagle paint job is the Mooney BMW series which I might copy.

Tihs isnt some guy in Omaha who didnt know better, its a for-profit business. LOL, what's the definition of an oxymoron? I loved going to dental school in Omaha but I guess I don't know better:)

You can check the gear horn inflight by pulling your throttle to idle and having the gear up. Some are activate by MP over like my S are activate by position of the throttle linkage. Sorry if this has already been mention. I read over the thread quickly. Many Mooney's have speed brakes. Speed brakes can inadvertently cause gear up landings for 2 reasons. 1. Give you the sensation of the gear being down and 2. Require to advance throttle overcome the drag on final to deactivate the warning. This can be an additional reason Mooney's have a higher incidence of gear up landings.
