john zeeuw Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 Hi, I am new to this forum. A friend of mine wants to step up to a used young turbo fiki single engine. Available budget around 400.000 usd. He is interested in speed, height, a good autopilot (not the 55x), a high payload (so no climate control?). He has no expierence on neither with Mooney airplanes. So: What what to buy? What to consider? What to look at during pre-buy inspection? and so on.... Any advise/thoughts welcome. Thanks. John Zeeuw
danb35 Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 What does he consider "high payload"? Depending on that answer, a Mooney may not be the best option--young, turbo, FIKI, and high payload don't go together very well in a Mooney.
FAST FLIGHT OPTIONS LLC Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 You're not going to find a Mooney that meets all of your specs. Seems like you friend is going to need a TAT TN A36 & not a Mooney. The autopilot issue alone will be a deal breaker. For example...If you don't want an STEC auto pilot then the only other autopilot choice you have right now in a "Young" Mooney with a "Good" autopilot is the GFC 700 in the Acclaim where the useful load is something like 850lbs-900 lbs with FIKI (not very high).
jlunseth Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 When your friend finds that miracle aircraft, be sure and let us know will you. We all want one of those.
Awful_Charlie Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 1997/98 Bravo, and I have 950lbs to play with. Drop in 60lbs of TKS fluid, 4 hours of fuel its a three seater. Brim full fuel and TKS it's a two seater for salad lovers 1

For that money and requirements a booted or TKS-equipped TAT TN-A36 is the plane.
Alan Fox Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 For that money and requirements a booted or TKS-equipped TAT TN-A36 is the plane. The TAT A36 is probably the most realistic option , Eventually they upped the ramp weight to 4000 MGTOW ....Keep in mind to run those weights you will use A LOT of runway to get airborne..... A major benefit to the Beech airframe is there are probably more STCs than any other aircraft..... Speedwise at altitude it seems the Beech and Mooney turbos are comparable....
jlunseth Posted June 25, 2013 Report Posted June 25, 2013 I have not heard any good things about the Bonanza factory turbocharged engines, very high maintenance. The turbo normalized engines would be the way to go I think.
