Robert C. Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 Hi everyone, 1st post here as I just joined. I'm looking very hard at the idea of becoming a Mooniac in the next 12 months Reading through the answers here and looking at the Mooney website I'm inclined to draw the conclusion that the pre-WAAS G1000 can be upgraded but the STEC cannot, therefore the only way to upgrade is to get rid of the STec, upgrade the G1000 hardware and then install a GFC700. Mooney appears to offer that as a service, but I haven't contacted them (yet) to confirm that. As KSMooniac notes in the next post, the cost of that might be frightening. Anyone read it differently? KSMooniac Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 Welcome! I can't tell from the links if the GFC700 upgrade is for existing planes, or if that was a listing for new production planes, which there aren't any currently of course. You might try to call or send an email and ask about the status and prices of those options. I suspect the cost of an autopilot change will be frightening. Quote
jlunseth Posted June 21, 2013 Report Posted June 21, 2013 The other issue with non-WAAS, aside from the inability to shoot LPV's, is the need to do a RAIM and to verify non-GPS navaids. Kind of a pain, so I have WAAS. Quote
ghovey Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 Regarding the ads-b 2020 problem for non waas g1000, The garmin gdl 88 has an option of a separate waas GPS in the unit that is designed for this problem. Quote
Robert C. Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 True, but that doesn't allow you to fly abroad or in class A airspace. The GDL88 only feeds UAT band and you'll need ES for flight levels and international. You can upgrade the G1000 for about $25,000 as I recall but it isn't certified with the S-Tec 55 ( for Mooneys) so you also need to upgrade to the GFC700. Even that may not solve the problem unless the Mooney version of the G1000 software has been upgraded. Diamond owners are on pins and needles as Diamond is dragging its heels on that. Not sure what Mooney will do. I'm looking very hard at getting an Ovation in the next 6-12 months and have all but ruled out the Ovation 2GX for this reason. Amazingly 2 Ovations just came back on the market at asking prices $20,000 higher than the prices they didn't sell at 6 months ago. Quote
Txbyker Posted August 30, 2013 Author Report Posted August 30, 2013 $35K for the waas/GFC kit from the factory. Then take it to a Garmin dealer for install. Just wondering if Garmin will have a touch screen upgrade for G1000s? Quote

For example, you can fly VFR in Japan up to 60000' msl. No crazy datalinks or ADSB or new age transponders required.... Quote
ghovey Posted August 31, 2013 Report Posted August 31, 2013 If you buying a Mooney to fly internationally, other than to Mexico or Canada then you are probably better off not buying an Ovation 2. Mexico is never going to have the ground stations required or impose a real deadline in the next 15 years IMO. Canada does not require ADS-b and has no deadline. I think a much more serious issue affecting your decision is what happens when you can't get 100ll for our engines. Much bigger problem. And an actual current problem if you are flying internationally. By the way the FAA is currently recommending that aircraft flying exclusively below 18 k install the uat band because of congestion on the es band. Go figure. Quote
