N1026F Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 I need a Pirep on Custom Airmotive in OK. My adjuster just forwarded a quote on a T&I for my 550G (See "Expensive Branfart thread). The quote was 1/2 that of two other shops of with good reputations. Hmm... Quote

You need to asked detailed questions on what each shop intends to replace as the bare minimum. My guess is that you will see some differences in the parts they plan to replace and work they intend to perform. Without knowing that you can't accurately compare quotes. Quote

We considered Custom Airmotive when we were shopping, and they didnt rank so high. Their 17K price for an IO-360-A3B6D was reground cam, lifters, and reworked cylinders. Adding up all those pieces to new it went over 22-23K, and we just spent the extra 3-4 grand and got a factory engine with roller camshaft. Of course, on a Continental, good reworked cylinders from a good-name shop might be better than the factory new cylinders which usually go 800-1000 hours before the valves go bad. Another friend of mine had his IO-520 in his Bellanca Super Viking rebuilt by Custom. They put the wrong size main bearings in the engine and it lasted a year and 80 hours before it went bad. They refused to help us on it when we tore the engine down and discovered this. Other than that, our shop has been using them for 20 years and they have a high opinion of them. Quote
