I've got my sights set on a nice M20K that has had the 262 Trophy conversion. The problem is that the aircraft is U.S. registered and I'm in Canada. I'm concerned about complications with the import process since the plane has been modified substantially due to the conversion. Has anyone else gone through the process? Any other 262s flying in Canada?

Thanks for your help, this forum is a great resource.

Where are you based? I imported my Ovation through Lake Central Air Services in Muskoka w/o a hitch. They do a lot of modifications (mostly for geosurv work) and are very familiar with the process of getting planes imported to and exported from Canada.

As long as the paperwork is in place it shouldn't pose any major issues. Make sure all the modifications are documented and the paperwork is on file with the FAA. STCs will cross without contest, and most 337 work will as well, as long as the documentation is in place and, in the opinion of the examiner, the work is done satisfactorily.

As well if you want an MSC to look at it, there are two Canadian shops on the factory list in Canada. If you are in Central Canada, I would strongly recommend Clarence and Tri City Aero in Waterloo.

Things I found out while shopping:

An overhauled engine is not recognized in canada unless it is 0 time overhauled in a certified shop. Prop in

canada has to be overhauled at 10 yrs regardless of hours since 0 time. If Garmin equipment is installed, can be a problem if not properly documented. This allies to all mods, stcs etc. If not properly documented, aircraft sits untill paperwork is cleared up. I have seen planes sitting for weeks while this is done.

Rule of thumb---Ususlly close to 10 K for imortation and inspection for C of A.

Thanks for the advice. I talked to a Minister's Delegate today and he's double checking some of the paperwork but like you have suggested if the STCs are in order it looks like there should be no major hiccups during import (touch wood). The prop will likely have to be overhauled but hopefully everything else is good to go.

Tim at Strategic is definitely a good resource. I'm in touch with him and he's steering me in the right direction.

I'm in western Canada, it looks like I've found someone fairly close to do the import although I've heard good things about the guys in Muskoka and Waterloo.

You hear a lot of horror stories about the import process, I'm getting the feeling that a lot of these cases are due to a lack of research and understanding of the process. At least I hope so!

Where in western Canada are you? If anywhere close to Calgary, cavalier Aviation is the msc at Springbank.
