The factory told me the PMA voltage regulator for the 252 is a VR515, I purchased one and the connectors are different, does anyone know how the 515 color coded wires match up to the Mooney connector pin numbers?

Thanks

That's interesting, I just went through this and found that you could have 2 VR802s(electro delta), or one 800270-503(Mooney). I had to pay big money to get a refurbished 800270-503. Electro delta no longer makes the VR802. Maybe the VR515 will work, but I have no idea the connector pinout, sorry.

For a M20K, you can actually use plane power voltage regulators. You can connect two of them together, with one acting as a slave. They are PMA for M20K. You can order the plugs from mouser. If you really need the pin layout, I can look it up for you tomorrow. I have one in my airplane prewired that I use as a back up/troubleshooting aid.

I also have another one, never used, fresh from the factory, prewired for Mooney as well I'd be willing to sell for cost, free plug/wiring (aircraft grade) included.

Let me know, I'll look up the pins for you. The plane power units are cheaper and much newer circuit design. I think the run about $180 from aircraft spruce plus another 15 or so bucks for plugs/pins/wires.

Satelmaszek,

I would like to purchase your spare regulator. You can PM me with a price at jweiner03@earthlink.net

The pinouts would also be helpful.

Jay,

I think I lied. I looked over the planepower.com STC AML list, and M20J and M20K are now gone from the AML. The comma is still there. Just so we're clear, I assume your M20K uses the round 9 pin connector?

If so, the pinouts are:

5 +Power In

6 Over Voltage Indicator

7 Field out to Alternator

8 Voltage Sense

9 -Ground

Do you have the dual alternator setup? If so, then I know VR515 is not the correct model, 800270-503 is. Don Maxwell fixes these things for a flat fee, at least he did for me.

Here is the type certificate for Mooneys that lists all the regulators:

Thanks for the info, when I emailed the factory the said the VR515 was the regulator i needed. Mooney wants over $1800.00 for the OEM replacement, that's crazy.

I will check with Don Maxwell to see if he is refurbishing the original

I really wish planepower would add the rest of the airframes to their STC AML. My FSDO would not do a field approval after initially agreeing to do so. Their voltage regulators and alternators are simply superior to anything out there.

One more question concerning the regulators: I have two alternators with two seperate regulators and one isn't working. On one of the regulators there is a label with the number 800397-503. Is this the Mooney nuber for the VR802?

Thanks,

Gunter

Gunter, No it is not. The VR802 are single, field adjustable VRs. Two were used in the earlier 252s. The -501, I believe are for single alternator installs, and the -503s, are for dual alternator versions. They are not field adjustable. Your -503 should have two connectors coming out. I would have yours rebuilt, as getting a 'new' one from Mooney would be very expensive.

Hm, according to my A&P there are two units with part number 800397-503 built into the plane. Actually it's the last 252 ever built (25-1230). If it was equipped with a 800270-503 there shauld be only one, right? I guess I'll have to check this myself.

I finally got both alternators working on the plane, but still have a " hi/low volt" light on the annunciator panel. I have 29.2 volts on theJPI gauge. Any help tracking down this issue would be helpful.

Btw the plane in question is a 1987 252.

Jay,

There is a specific procedure to follow according to the service manual for your plane. I know there is one for the Ovation anyway...

Two dissimilar alternators and controllers on one engine.

Do you have access to a service manual for your plane?

Best regards,

Yes,

I do have a service manual. My issue is the "hi volt " light never goes off even when the alt. field switches are off. The light should be blinking to indicate a low volt condition.

29 volts doesn't sound too high either according to what I was reading...

Good luck with that. Can you get help from the controller manufacturer?

Who manufactured the controller? Zeftronics?

Jay,

When I turn on the Master with the field switches off the High/Low Voltage light stays steady. I'm not sure why. After start up and turning on the Fields, the light will go out. Yours prob stays on because of the 29.2v. The voltage is ok, but the annunciator is prob set to come on around 29v. If you have the VR802s, they can be adjusted easily while still in the plane. The maint manual says to set to 28.3v +.2 /-.0. If you have the 800270-503, that will have to be sent out for adjustment.

Jack,

Thanks for the info, the plane has the 503 regulators that have not been changed. We have replaced and repaired( new coupler) the alternators, could we have miswired them?

Electrical problems are a real pain. You could swap the -503s connectors. If the red OV #2 light in the circuit breaker panel comes on(annunciator light out), then you're pretty sure the wiring from the alternator is bad.

Guys, It seems like is very difficult to find voltage regulator p/n VR415F , any tips by which p/n it can be replaced?

Thank a lot!

you can get them from aircraft spruce $233

I also have a used one laying around, i replaced it with a plane power regulator.

Plane power doesn't have a PMA replacement regulator for this application, but they do have a complete STCd replacement kit that includes the regulator, alternator and new drive gear. All for a little under $1k .
