Has anyone used the Anywhere Map app for Android yet?

If so:

  • What do you like/dislike about it
  • If you've used any of the iPad apps, how does it compare
  • Has it been stable
  • What tablet are you using it on
  • How has support been?

I've been using WingX Pro for a couple of years and am tired of their poor development strategy and their "adding features" but not fixing the things that need to be fixed.

I also want a smaller form factor device that I can mount on the yoke and put my 496 in a panel mount. I know Apple is supposed to come out with a small form factor iPad but I want to explore all options.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave--

I just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 at Wally World for $249, and downloaded a 30-day trial of Aviation Maps from Avilution. Hope to test-fly it soon. If I can figure out a way to yoke-mount it in portrait view, I'll be happy. The unit measures 7½ x 4¾ and is less than ½" thick, so it should be Mooney-cockpit-friendly.

The full Avilution package is either $54.95 or $74.95, I've seen both prices while downloading the update. That is supposed to cover Sectionals, En-Routes and Approach Plates for whatever portion of the country you want, up to the whole thing.

The Galaxy is wi-fi only, not cellular, but does have Bluetooth for GPS hookup. Even has a built-in micro-SD slot, and a button on the side that I haven't figured out yet.

Be patient, this is my first venture into non-paper charts. I used to download Approach Plates by state from NavMonster, but he's gone now and I went back to paper. We'll see how things go.

Try chartbundle for approach plates, been using this site for a couple of years and been happy. It's free, and that's more gas $'s. Also, use OruxMaps for charts, not a nice integrated system, but for backup reference to onboard GPS and printed destination charts, it works well enough.

Avilution works great for me. It isn't fancy, but works great an EFB/electronic chart server. I don't flight plan or file with it (I use fltplan.com and weathermeister.com, primarily) but it works great for leaving the reams of paper behind. Price is cheap, and it works well. I'm using the original Motorola Xoom from March 2011.

I was also an Anywheremap Pro user on their Q1 tablet which I liked and I have lifetime subscriptions to both their IFR and VFR databases. All their IFR plates are georeferenced and they can superimpose this on the Low level IFR chart. As it stands now on Freedom, the database subscriptions will expire after one year although I was under the impression the Pro version subscriptions would transfer to Freedom. If they don't get it out of beta within the year, I may switch to Wing X. I am also waiting to see which ADS-B hardware platform they will support. The interface needs some improvements especially for IFR use, but it has been stable for me and has rarely crashed. The quality of the sectionals and IFR charts are not as good as Fltplan but usable. I used to fly with the Pro version, but now I have switched over to the iPad version. I have charts on Skycharts Pro and Fltplan as backups.
