AmigOne Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 I just noticed for the first time a spring-loaded pin with a hole in the middle protruding from the bottom of the left wing very near the wing root in my 68M20C. Forgot to check if there is a similar one under the right wing. What is it for? Tried to attach a picture but the upload failed, common problem in this new set up. Quote
BigTex Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Yep... 99% that's what you're seeing... Static drain. Should have a second one, just past the wing more in the cener of the belly. Quote
jlunseth Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Yup, pitot static drain. You should push it to allow moisture to drain out every time you pre-flight. There may also be one on the underside of the fuselage, port side about half way back. Also check this during pre-flight. Quote
AmigOne Posted September 11, 2012 Author Report Posted September 11, 2012 Wow, talk about me not knowing something so basic/important. And this is my third Mooney! I just wonder what is the purpose of the hole through the pin. This must be in the preflight check but I don't remember ever seeing it. Quote
jlunseth Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Don't feel bad. I have had my plane for a little over three years. I found the drain under the wing right away, because it is in the manual. But just found out about the one under the fuselage a couple of weeks ago from Bruce Jaeger. You would never find it unless you knew to look for it. Quote
Newmooneyguy Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 While we're on this subject, in my 66E there is a leather pouch on the center pedestal containing a spoon with a v-shaped notch in it. It looks like it's been there a while. Any idea what THIS is for? Quote
rdav Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I know that my plane has the drain at the port side wing root, but where is the one under the fuselage? Was it only included on certain model years? Quote
rdav Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 I should mention .. mine is a 1970 M20C Quote
Lood Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Could anyone maybe post a picture of this? Quote

Newmooneyguy Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 For an inflight meal? Would never have guessed it. Quote

DaV8or Posted September 17, 2012 Report Posted September 17, 2012 Could anyone maybe post a picture of this? +1. I really don't know about this drain either. Quote

I just wonder what is the purpose of the hole through the pin. This must be in the preflight check but I don't remember ever seeing it. At one of the Mooney Mapa Fly-ins I asked about that hole in the pin. I was told that it was there to hang a reminder banner so that you would see and remember to check it during your pre-flight. Sort of like the red banner hanging down from the pitot cover if you have one installed. Quote
