Hi all,

Decided to pull my oil cooler the next few weeks as temps were getting too hot in the summer.  I was going to just pull the cooler and send it off to Pacific Oil Cooler, which I know is a recommended shop (there is a sticker on it, so it has already been there at some point in the past), but looking at overhaul / IRAN prices I'm wondering if I should just replace it with the PMAd replacement for the Stewart Warner original as the price point (1.2 AMU) is probably pretty close and the original is looking pretty beat up.  My A&P / IA says I could just pull the existing unit off and we could flush that ourselves.  That's not something I've done before, but sounds like my A&P has.  Anyone done this?  It's not something I'd considered.

It’s done pretty routinely.  At a minimum you will know how well oil is flowing.  If you can’t get flow through it after flushing, send it out.

I flushed mine at overhaul in 2020.  I hooked up a hose about 2ft long with a funnel, and flushed it forward and backward several times. With each subsequent flush it became more clear. After about a gallon of mineral spirits it was clear and I was happy.

Although I do not have a digital oil temp, the temp is consistently and significantly lower than before overhaul.  To be clear, I used the exact same baffle seals that I purchased from @Gee Bee Aeroproductsseveral years ago. No other changes.

I have a parts washer. If I stick its squirter in a fitting and turn the pump on the solvent flows through real nice. I’ll let it flow in both directions for about 10 minutes then blow it out with compressed air.

That’s how I was taught 30 years ago.

My oil temps were going higher. At first I flushed it using a 20$ pump from Amazon. Ran it like for 4 hrs,  30 min in each direction at a time. I straightened the fins with a radiator comb. I only gained around 5*F, which is trivial.

I put in a new vernatherm and it solved the problem.
