0TreeLemur Posted December 16, 2025 Report Posted December 16, 2025 This post is aimed at those of you new to Mooneyspace who are still flying birds with a little passive dot CO detector. You can have a gazillion dollar panel that looks like a sports bar because of all the screens- but if you don't have an active CO detector, you might as well be flying a covered wagon. CO is a silent killer that short circuits the brain's error detection capability while making people feel satisfied, sleepy, or both. I have no interest in the company. Hell, I don't even know anyone who works at the company. All I know is that when CO builds up in the cabin of my J model the Sensorcon CO detector flashes/beeps and gets my attention. They are offering: 15% Off Inspector Portable Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Kits at sensorcon.com when you use promo code: 12DAYS For those of you haven't read the tale- here's a link of a very lucky pilot (and MS member @DanM20C) who survived a dance with CO and woke up in a frozen pasture in Minnesota- living to tell the tale: This perhaps the best threads EVER on MS. Read it if you haven't. If after reading it if you don't own one and if you don't immediately order a CO detector, I hope you haven't had kids yet so you can be a Darwin award nominee. Fred 4 1
Will.iam Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 Just bought a second one to have 2 in cabin in case first one dies. It’s been 2 years plus need to get first one recalibrated when i get the battery changed.

But I’m pretty sure Dan Bass has you beat cause he carries a CO detector for every seat

Two years later, found the first and it still works. I have no idea which one I Velcro by the fresh air vent under the throttle. 1

Fred Thanks for that. I already have one, but I used the code and bought one for a friend who flys a Carbon Cub and a -185. He gave me a good IPC the other day and refused to let me pay, but asked about my sensorcon as he only has “the dot”?! I was like, dude, really? This is a good Christmas present! 3
SKI Posted December 18, 2025 Report Posted December 18, 2025 This is always one of those things I think "Yeah I need to order one of those" Then get sidetracked and forget about it. I don't even have one of the dot cards in the Mooney. Yesterday I read the first post here by Fred and immediately went to Sensorcon and finally ordered one. Scary to think this simple thread could potentially save someone's life. Maybe mine..... 3
tigers2007 Posted December 30, 2025 Report Posted December 30, 2025 I contacted Sensorcon as that 15% off code did not work. He advised to use code MOONEY20 for 20% off their AV8 series detectors. 3 1
Bartman Posted December 31, 2025 Report Posted December 31, 2025 Thank you @tigers2007 You inspired me to take advantage of this opportunity.
Bob E Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 FYI. I originally posted this in Oct. 2024. I've had this unit for for than 4 years now and it works great. It's currently on eBay for $36. Link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/153655669351 ------------------- Although I have a TSO'd USB power source built into my panel, I use the cigarette lighter socket for auxiliary USB power, and found a nifty little adapter that also includes a carbon monoxide detector. The CO detector has a digital readout (blue LED between the two sockets) as well as a very loud buzzer that goes off if it detects the presence of CO. It's on whenever the master is on, and it works great. I tested it by lighting a match a few feet away when the aircraft was in the hangar. That triggered a warning in about 3 seconds when the indicator reached about 20 ppm.

Hank, just wondering: If you place a CO detector close to the fresh air vent, aren't you substantially impairing the functionality of the detector?

jamesyql Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Just ordered one as a secondary monitor in addition to the built in CO alarm on the delta Zulu headset

True, but the fresh air vent (at least in my '65 C) next to the pilot's left knee blows outside air directly at that same area, so I'm wondering if that large stream of fresh air would prevent the detector from picking up a CO leak. Anyway, the main thing is to HAVE a CO detector.

In my C, this is the only entry point for heated air. It can also bring in fresh air, but still from under the cowl. I usually run a 50-50 mix, pulling roughly the same amount of Cabin Heat as Fresh Air through this vent (because full Cabin Heat will cook me in my seat). 1
Jackk Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 If you build your own stratus you can install a BME688 and it can monitor CO, as well as can be trained to monitor fume events for turbines https://www.adafruit.com/product/5046
skykrawler Posted January 7 Report Posted January 7 I have this. Has built in rechargeable, audible alarms at 3 levels. Was recently lent to a friend and detected >50ppm (audible alarm caught the attention) in a Bravo LTS. Only nit is the screen is not very bright and is hard to see in daylight. Inexpensive. https://www.amazon.com/sspa/click?ie=UTF8&spc=MTo2NjQzMDA0MTYxNDIwMjA6MTc2NzgwOTQ2MTpzcF9hdGY6MzAxMDg0NDk1MDE1NTAyOjowOjo&url=%2FPortable-Monoxide-Detector-Temperature-Humidity%2Fdp%2FB0DX1SSNQF%2Fref%3Dsr_1_5_sspa%3Fdib%3DeyJ2IjoiMSJ9.fY0DRV_piaZ7g0a_G6gIfinec8Xy0l_USran_Ayu54-yX7ixlwnWKwHwMJqao1JOB-XzRiOfahujz4_yyEdxB41Uhghf6gzkJErqQ0XucJDE0n0YSK-DuxRf9zdkMrm-bahM7MZJeHvCn9m9kujFZ0sgx2VIT4xnJgXJZbddnRipZZRe6x6NtL0NoGLWZQNO_2BNznrQF7nY2b3ZseH7wUNBff0xNZneAOyGf7TAYnrD_LNguDcnvW9Y9iHf0GDARomfNYFOHWJ-rRyZTNISWSH06AfSHQ7UK2XoZLdQ5A8.WeHEGk4582du0_vZZCdgJnEHC2jMfMscwdHGf3YuTT4%26dib_tag%3Dse%26hvadid%3D694155887981%26hvdev%3Dc%26hvexpln%3D67%26hvlocphy%3D9008565%26hvnetw%3Dg%26hvocijid%3D16157778508394433873--%26hvqmt%3De%26hvrand%3D16157778508394433873%26hvtargid%3Dkwd-346372228299%26hydadcr%3D15428_13495262%26keywords%3Damazon%2Bco%2Bdetector%26mcid%3Dbf46e3b75a693a0e83b78ac014840cd0%26qid%3D1767809461%26sr%3D8-5-spons%26sp_csd%3Dd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY%26psc%3D1 There are others. 1
