toto Posted November 7 Report Posted November 7 Every email I get has this domain: url9615.mooneyspace.com … so when I click the link, I get an error saying that the hostname doesn’t match the SSL certificate. This just started today - seems like a problem with a new configuration.
natdm Posted November 7 Report Posted November 7 Yeah a lot of people on facebook are also saying Verizon is blocking Mooneyspace IP as spam, and the owners need to call to sort it out, I guess.
Jackk Posted November 7 Report Posted November 7 Reason #529 why you should always be behind a good VPN. When your ISP decides what you can and can’t see, no bueno 1

The system could be trying to incorrectly redirect you due to some rule and it is messing up the link. Edited November 7 by PeteMc

Are these some sort of automated notices or something? And do the emails go through some other service or do you think they are coming directly from mooneyspace.com. I don't see why there would be a Trace or Redirect code in front of of the URL unless some 3rd party is inserting the link. Guess it is possible that the main site that hosts mooneyspace may be acting up again. We've all see the posts from @mooniac58 in the past about issues with the site, so maybe he can shed some light on why you're getting these links. (And I'm curious what the emails are...) Emails are the main way I am alerted about new posts. I subscribe to everything and I follow every thread that interests me, and I get an email on new posts. My best guess is that this is a staging domain for MS, and for some reason the site was set to use the staging hostname in email alerts. Dunno.
NickG Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 I am unable to log on to MS using either my home broadband (Centurylink) or Cellular data (Verizon). I’m logging on here via Starlink (which I use only in the plane…)
mooniac58 Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 I made changes to the DNS server related to emails yesterday as part of trying to fix the ongoing problem of Yahoo/AOL/SBCGlobal blocking all of our emails. I made the changes as advised by SendGrid (who we use to send emails) and it seems that it did some weird things to the URLs in the messages that linked back to Mooneyspace. I have taken these records back out now so I hope it will fix things in this regard. Still not sure why Yahoo and company won't accept our emails when everyone else seems to just fine...

The link in this message still had the bad hostname. Maybe it takes a little while to apply?
mooniac58 Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 It could take a little while DNS changes can take some time to propagate depending on the caching settings on the various DNS servers out there.

Hmm. The record is now missing from DNS, so old email links have a lookup failure. I’ll have to wait for the next email to see if the links are fixed.
Flyler Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 @mooniac58 have you checked DKIM/DMARC? I wonder if AOL/Yahoo are requiring the emails to be signed.
PeteMc Posted November 8 Report Posted November 8 18 hours ago, toto said: The link in this message still had the bad hostname. Maybe it takes a little while to apply? On both ends. It takes a while for DNS to disseminate to all the various DNS servers. The bigger ones (Google, etc.) get it quicker, then the ones that pick it up from the big DNS servers may take some time to refresh. Then if you're using a local DNS server, it depends upon where you're refreshing from and if there are layers in between. Then on your computers side, you may need to Flush your machines DNS so it doesn't keep trying to go to the old address. PC: Right Click on the Windows icon in the lower left, pick Terminal and type in ipconfig /flushdns <Enter> MAC (a little more complicated): Cmd + Space and type in Terminal > enter sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder <Enter> > put in Admin Password <Enter> (If you're logged in as the Admin, don't remember if you still have to put in the PW.)

Yeah, but the link in the email is still incorrect. Unless Craig intends for the url9615 hostname to be used, something has to change on the server side independent from DNS.

I’m getting a spam warning today from Gmail too. All messages from MS are being dumped into the spam folder, and I get this message if I try to open: Definitely feels like a DKIM/DMARC/SPF issue.

mooniac58 Posted November 9 Report Posted November 9 I am still working on the email issues. Unfortunately, it looks as though the SendGrid support team member helping me is off for the weekend so I won't get updates until Monday. Note that I believe the email issues are separate from the general DNS issues being seen by certain users. I was hearing about the general DNS issues over a week ago and the email issues started only when I tried to get our mail delivered to Yahoo/AOL accounts. Hopefully the email stuff will be working correctly next week and I am not sure where to start on the general DNS issues as so much of that is out of my control and all tests on the domains DNS come back solid, even from dozens of locations around the globe.

The hostname issue in email links seems to be fixed - this sent me to the correct url
toto Posted November 9 Author Report Posted November 9 Gmail has stopped flagging these emails as spam too…. So from my perspective the issue is fullly resolved at this point. The url hostname is correct and the sender email domain is trusted again.

My ISP/cell provider doesn’t have the faintest clue as to what I do online, to them it’s just one encrypted connection to some random server, as it should be. The server I connect to has no useable logs ether, as was proven in independent audits. What’s even worse is phone companies and their creepy monitoring practices, al la Room 641A https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_641A Edited November 9 by Jackk
dkkim73 Posted November 9 Report Posted November 9 On the DNS topic (not the email-related fork) there are a lot of choices for DNS including Cloudflare, OpenDNS, etc in addition to pointing directly at Google. Someone mentioned Brave as a browser... On a similar note, one thing to consider doing if you're somewhat technically-comfortable is to set up a Pi-Hole instance on your home network (a Raspberry Pi running a special system to provide DNS + an extra layer of scrutiny). Even in default mode it will "eat" resolution requests for various ad banner, tracking, and malware sites. Occasionally breaks some ad integration you might want, but generally just speeds things up and you're not using your connection to serve yourself ads. You can ad or remove things easily (sites, special blacklists etc).
