Hello,

This weekend I'm going down to Mooney Mart.  I'm not going to purchase anything just yet I'm going there to check out some Mooney's.  I'm going to sit in some to see if it's a good fit for me.  Like I mentioned in previous posts I'm fairly wide in the shoulders.

Is there anything on the ground I can look for on these planes to watch out for? I would love to have a checklist in my head that I can go over.  I know corrosion is one of them, also the overall airframe.  What else?

What I am trying to accomplish:

#1 Sitting in a few Mooney's to see which one is comfortable for my, (And my wifes) body type.

#2 Learning how to look for trouble spots for when I'm ready to buy.

#3 Establishing what kind of operation Mooneymart is.  Is it a place that I can take my business or should I go elsewhere in Florida.

Thank you!

Mr. Jones,

Please make sure you check out AAA before you do anything.  I have never purchased anything from them but have had several conversations with Mr. G and have always been treated to great information.  There are several on this board that will give you their "honest" opinion that have had actual purchasing experiences with AAA and it's 99% positive which is almost unheard of when it comes to brokes/dealers.

Make sure you do a search on this forum for Mooney Mart.  I have had no dealings with them so can't comment on good/bad.

All the best and good luck in your search.

I agree with Brett, call David at AA and be honest, tell him you want a Mooney and are learning to fly.  He enjoys talking to people and will tell you what to look for.  They treat everyone this way, prospect or not.

...be sure to find out whether sales tax will be applied in your state. Sometimes if you buy from an individual you don't pay sales taxes if it comes from out of state. Just check. I recently had to cut a check to Gov. Perry for 14k---3yrs post purchase (no penalties).

As mentioned in a previous thread, you can come to Lakeland and sit in my Mooney or I can fly and see you.  You can accomplish #1 with me as respects mid-body airframes.  Longbody Mooneys will feel pretty much the same as my M20K.  Note that I am leaving for Texas Thursday evening, so I can only help you till then.  I can help you a little with #2 but you'd best get a pre-purchase/annual inspection from a reputable Mooney Service Center (The Texas ones are great). There are also 2 good Mooney A&Ps that I recommend in Florida.  #3 you can accomplish with a search on this forum, as many people have written up their opinions.

All American Aircraft in Texas is a good dealer if you choose to work with one.

Where ever you buy your aircraft, you will need to pay the State of Florida their 6% tax. Trust me, they will catch up to you. One year after purchasing my last aircraft (out of state) I received a phone call that went like this .....  " Hi Bruce, how are you enjoying your new Mooney? " It was a state tax collector with a sense of humor. They do ramp checks at night and keep notes. Enjoy your hunt and good luck with your flying.

Just a thought. It appears you're looking for a Mooney while also choosing a FI. I'd suggest, slow down. Find an instructor whom you like. Solo. Decide if you really want to pursue a PPL (and an IR, which is a good idea for a Mooney driver). Get some time, and then look for an aircraft. I'll probably get some blowback on this advice, but years ago my wife and I decided to get PADI certified. Piece of cake, but, after a couple of dives to look at fish, the experience paled: yep, they're there. Diving was not an activity either of us cared to pursue. Glad I didn't spring for the fancy kit.

thats not always true.

I bought my aircraft from Florida and paid 0% sales tax to Florida and 0% use tax to Massachusetts (Massachusetts has no sales / use tax on aircraft)

The key thing being when you buy an aircraft from Florida - you have to go through a broker. Although I was buying from an individual, I paid a broker (premier aircraft services in FLL - excellent guys there btw) to handle the transaction. Since I also did a pre-buy inspection from the premier (also a top notch MSC) - they were more than willing to help me.

There are also other rules - you have to submit xyz forms within so many days of the purchase etc. The information is florida department of revenue's site - but I just called them directly and they were extremely helpful in showing me how not to pay them sales tax - lol

These are 2010 rules by the way - things may have changed now.

I've bought 3 (1967 C, 1982 J & 1985 K) from AAA.  Jimmy and David are top notch people, know their Mooneys, and stand behind what they sell.

I have, and will continue to recommend them.

I can't believe I'm the first to tell you to stay as far from Mooney Mart as humanly possible.  I understand Coy Jacobs is no longer involved, rumor has it from others at SRQ that he was seen being dragged off in cuffs (and I'm totally certain he deserved it), but those left worked with Coy for some time and guilt by association if fair in this situation. DON'T BUY ANY THING OR ANY SERVICE FROM MOONEY MART EVER, EVER!

There are plenty of reputable people in the aviation industry and AAA seems to always get high praise.  I would go with that over any snake oil or promises you get from Mooney Mart.  I'm not alone in my opinion.  Do a search on this site and you will find many that have had similar experiences.

So much for item #3 on your list.
