woodman86 Posted February 15 Report Posted February 15 Any tips on how to get the cable from the top from the VR antenna down through the tail into the fuselage Quote
MB65E Posted February 16 Report Posted February 16 Install a WAAS receiver. Just kidding, Safety wire. Ribbon and vacuum. Long fiberglass rod, and some good luck. -Matt 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 16 Report Posted February 16 Should have tied a string on the old one before it got away... 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 16 Report Posted February 16 I would drill out the rivets for the little shelf and remove it. When you are done you will have to replace it with blind rivets. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 16 Report Posted February 16 Be aware that there should be a BALUN cable arrangement in there, not just a straight piece of cable. 1 Quote
Aerodon Posted February 16 Report Posted February 16 You'll be amazed at how far you can get through a wing with a series of welding rods. Even ribs beyond ribs without access holes. Aerodon Quote

Depends, a lot of the cat's whiskers VOR antennas have built in baluns. There are different mounting hole patterns. Aerodon Quote
Kelpro999 Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 You can remove the rubber grommet and send this down for a better view. Quote

That's not part of the antenna array itself? You have to split it before it gets to the antenna which then has two connectors? Quote
PeteMc Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 I like @Kelpro999's idea of using a video snake down from the top. Then attach a draw string so that after you get the camera out you can pull the coax through. Quote

You have to split it before it gets to the antenna which then has two connectors? Maybe, and maybe not. What was in there before? If the antenna is just two rods, it needs a BALUN, if it has a built in balun then you don’t. Most antennas that have a built in balun have a coax connector. If it just has two screw lugs, you probably need a balun. 2 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 There was this kid who had a Luscome. He complained that his VOR would only work for about 10 miles from the station. He said he had taken it to a number of shops and nobody could figure it out. I put in a BALUN for him and he said he could pick up the VORs for 100 miles. He was very happy. BTW this was in the 90s when VORs mattered. 1 Quote
cliffy Posted February 19 Report Posted February 19 I used to make VOR antennas Early Moonies didn't have internal baluns (mostly ferrites) They only had folded coax cable baluns, If you have a NEW antenna that fits and it has only a BNC connector then (as noted above) it has an internal balun. If you are using the old antenna then it more than likely has/had a cable balun that needs to be replaced. Directions on how to make a VOR cable balun are easy to find on line. Show us the antenna and it connections and we can better advise Forgot to add that there are new antennas that come with a cable and cable balun as a kit and there are new VOR antennas that have the balun built in. Be sure you know what you have if you buy new. They each work the same. 1 Quote
