Bees777 Posted November 14, 2023 Report Posted November 14, 2023 New M20e owner. Does anyone have photos of a center post mounted mag compass and center post mounted sunvisors? My plane has neither, nor does it have obvious mounting holes for visors below the windscreen or holes in the center post where I would think a compass would have been. If it ever had visors I’m guessing they were center post mounted. Thx. Art in Hermann MO Quote

Has your E been converted to a 201-style sloped windscreen or single-piece windscreen? Both of those mods remove the sheet metal covering the center fuselage tube. If the visors were also mounted to that cover, then that option would be also lost. There is a part number in the’65E parts book for a compass mount, pn 820023. For what it’s worth, here’s a couple pictures of my center post from a ‘63C showing the compass and visors mounting. Note the piece of hose wedged between the compass housing and the center post… to keep the compass from vibrating. The mount was very springy. Quote

Bees777 Posted November 15, 2023 Author Report Posted November 15, 2023 47U, You raise a great question: while my plane does not have the Jmodel windscreen, it was converted to a single piece windscreen (old slope, all the old access panels). I’m curious if my center post was hidden inside a housing such as the one to which your compass is attached? My center post is much like that in a J or K….a round tube. Thanks for your help! Hank Posted November 15, 2023 Report Posted November 15, 2023 What year is your E, @Bees777? My C is from 1970, and the sun visors are hinged on the outside corners. You'll have to pull down the front of the overhead liner to see if you have tapped holes on a corner or not, but it's not into the tubing, there's a little gusset that's drilled and tapped. 1 Quote

There are compass mounts available that can be mounted to the tube. I’ve since upgraded to a vertical card compass. Luckily, I didn’t have problems swinging the compass, as some have. 1 Quote
Dick Denenny Posted November 16, 2023 Report Posted November 16, 2023 I went the cheap way for my '66 E and got the visor with a ram suction ball. Works when I need it and can take it off if it's in the way. DD 1 Quote
Hank Posted November 16, 2023 Report Posted November 16, 2023 Also, check with Don Lee and see if he's still making them. What's his screen name? I can't find it. Quote

Hank, You may be taking about me. Indeed, I am still making visors, but not for center post mounts. Don Muncy Quote

DonMuncy Posted November 17, 2023 Report Posted November 17, 2023 That's OK. Sometimes I have trouble remembering it too. Quote

Must have confused you with Lee I-forget, whose avatar photo still looks like your last one. Take two people's names and smash them together to make a new one that sounds right but isn't actually a person . . . . Quote
ArtVandelay Posted November 17, 2023 Report Posted November 17, 2023 I personally like the view without the compass hanging in the way. 1 Quote

Buckeyechuck Posted November 23, 2023 Report Posted November 23, 2023 My compass is mounted to the center post. I also have visors from Lasar that are mounted from the outer cage tubing. 1 Quote
Fergie Posted February 25, 2024 Report Posted February 25, 2024 Here's a picture of my '66 M20E that's been updated to the 201 windscreen with a swing visor (can move to either side and extends out also) and a compass mounted on the centre rod. 1 Quote
DonMuncy Posted February 26, 2024 Report Posted February 26, 2024 If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the visors? I would be very interested to see super detailed photos, specs, etc. Quote
