GeeBee Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 This will be interesting. The 757 has a fairly simple gear system, and the alternate extension is even simpler. The alternate uses 28v battery power to power a small hydraulic pump that unlocks the gear doors, pushes the over center just far enough to allow the down springs do drop and lock the gear. The only thing I can think of is loss of the left hydraulic system, then the alternate system failed somehow. Quote
MikeOH Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 Yeah, but the real question is how much 1980Mooney’s insurance is going to go up! 1 3 Quote

tmo Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 Hey, cut them some slack, at least they didn't just pull the chute! 2 Quote
EricJ Posted October 6, 2023 Report Posted October 6, 2023 Will definitely be interesting to see what happened here. Might be a maintenance failure. Won't be surprised if the airplane returns to service. Quote
GeeBee Posted October 6, 2023 Author Report Posted October 6, 2023 Looks like wreckage is cleared as the runway NOTAM has been cancelled Quote

GeeBee Posted October 8, 2023 Author Report Posted October 8, 2023 My guess is they had a leak in the left hydraulic reservoir below the standpipe level that completely emptied the reservoir and left the emergency pump dry. Quote

They're supposed to do gear swings and backup checks during their approved inspection schedule, probably annually or so like we do. I'm sure in the final report there'll be more info on how the backup failed. Definitely unusual, and I'm curious to see what happened. 1 Quote
