My M20F has overhead fresh air vents from air scoop door on top of aircraft.  The air scoop open and shut control knob on aircraft overhead does not control scoop door when turned.  I have to manually open and shut the door when preflighting / post flighting.  The question is how do I fix the problem?  It was not evident / obvious how to get at the control when I took the plastic interior ceiling down.  Has the wire going to the vent broken? or is it slipping?  How do I get to the inside of the flat vent tubing to fix the problem?  Thanks for the help.    rogrbal@gmail.com

Please use the search feature. There is an increasing number of people whose first post is "How do I run LOP", or "whats an M20C worth".  These topics have been covered over and over again.

I used the search feature, and found the priceless response.  It just was not quite clear to me and I was looking for more info or a little expansion?  / more explanation?

Well you were partly there in removing the plastic from above - the cable is likely broken at the control arm - the left vent in front will give you access to the mechaism and cable - but to get to it you have to pull off the duct tape covering the many little screws - I pulled both front vents when I did mine.

Your cable is either broken, disconnected, the knob is slipping on the shaft, or the rack gear mechanism is broken. A good start would be to check the Illustrated Parts Catalog for your plane because it has exploded diagrams of the system in there. It will give you an idea how the system works and what parts are involved. I may have the IPC for your plane and could post it here, but it depends on what year F you have.

Unfortunately, a whole cable replacement requires drilling rivets, but one of our members here devised a way to replace just the solid wire core of the cable and fix his. Sadly, the cable is made of steel and due to lack of use, they often rust solid. Changes are, this happened to yours and then somebody got rough with it and something broke. Once you get it fixed, make sure to lube it, use every now and again and it won't happen again.

Below is the diagram for the F roof vent system.

Many thanks for all the help.  I was able to replace the cable wire.

And I wrote up / attached a detailed discription of how to do it.

Here are the links to view it in Google Documents:

I agree except the search feature could be improved, it only looks at one word. For example a search for cabin vent will show a lot of different feeds most not appropriate. Fly safely
