I swear I used to be able to lock rotation by clicking the 'Lock' symbol in the upper right when I had an approach plate displayed.  Now, regardless if if the Lock symbol is highlighted/active or not, the plate rotates rather than remaining locked.  I've looked in settings for both Foreflight and the iPad, read the manual, and looked for an answer on their website.

Therefore, I sent an inquiry to their support department.

Their answer is below. So, if anyone else is having this problem....you are stuck with it!

"Hi Mike,

Thank you for the PIREP. What you are experiencing is a known issue that we are working to address. We have an internal engineering case to look into this issue further and fix as able. While we don’t have a timeframe for when a fix may be put in place, please know we are working on correcting this.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you. We're happy to help.

For those not already aware... if you swipe down from the top right corner of the iPad (no matter what application is running), you can lock display rotation for the entire iOS system, such that nothing ever rotates, on any page, in any app.

I just verified the bug @MikeOH described, but the reason I hadn't noticed it is that I keep screen rotation for the entire system locked, rather than just for individual plates.  If that meets your needs, it's a good workaround.

Hmmmmm........on my iPad Mini 5 running 15.3, I drag down from the extreme upper right corner, revealing the "Control Center", then tap the lock symbol (highlighted).

EDIT:  Dang!  Seconds too late (again).

Isn’t ForeFlight support great? Bet they got right back to you and they had an answer. With Garmin, I wait two weeks and the answer is a lot of words to say they don’t know.

Hmm, seems FF doesn't have an answer, either.  But, I admit, they were quick to tell me:D

Yes. I discovered that, as well.  I don't find it a good workaround, however, since I don't want the entire iPad locked in one orientation.

They answered by telling you that they were aware of the issue and were working on it. That may not be the answer you wanted, but it was an honest answer.

LOL!  I really wouldn't recommend that response as an 'answer' when your boss asks.:D

I start Foreflight for flight with an iOS shortcut. Among the things it does is turn the orientation lock on.

I don't follow you. It seems that the only answer that would satisfy you is that it is fixed. But it's not. It's a known issue and they told you that they are working on it, but haven't figured it out yet. Most likely, since it used to work, Apple changed something in one of its releases that broke it. So, if you were the boss and you asked the engineer working on it for the status, what would you have the engineer say?

Sigh.  I would want details; I thought that was obvious.  Just telling my boss, "I'm working on it and I don't have a clue when I'll get it fixed" would NOT be an acceptable "answer". Maybe I've just had bosses that are too demanding:D

FF's "answer" smacks of "we know about it, don't have a clue what's wrong, and it's so far down our list to fix we may never get to it".

That may very well be exactly what it means, at least the far down the list part.  Aside from new feature requests, they get a bunch of requests for fixes for found bugs and enhancements. I'm sure the queue includes "how many do we think care?"

Well, as a young design engineer I lead a small tech group working on a solution to a problem.  The contract was cost + fixed fee.  For many months my status report was “we don’t know how to do this yet and we don’t know how long it will take.”

I could very accurately report how much we had already spent, tho.  I can’t say the customer took hearing that message every month any too gracefully, but they grudgingly approved continuing.

Eventually we found a good solution.
