Guys,

So between me watching Ice Pilots, NWT and daughter watching Frozen, I had to ask: anybody here ever landed a Mooney on an ice runway? Anyone flown to Greenland?

I was just talking about this the other day.  There is a runway in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee.  Alton Bay Seaplane Base and Ice Runway...

Somebody posted a vid a couple years ago going in there with their Mooney, so, yes, it has been done.

I have landed on a runway that turned out to be covered in ice. Does that count?

I did that too.  I'm not sure if you get the same effect as the surface of a frozen lake... Roughness and all.

No runway anymore

That’s what I hear.

It was 1982 and I took my girlfriend there. I wanted to rent an airplane and fly to Kawaii. I rented a Tomahawk and my flight instructor for the checkout was Mimi Tompkins. The first officer on the Aloha flight where the top came off.

With your Mooney??? Do you have any pictures?

Well, wife forbade me from going that far out in the ocean. But I'm still allowed to go Alaska :D

I’ve landed a Cherokee 180 on a frozen lake but not the Mooney. Really fun!

With the deep freeze setting in on the northeast, decent chance Alton Bay opens soon!

It’s been well below freezing for a few days in NJ….

NH will be about 10-15°F colder than here…

Search for Alton bay somebody left their pics around here somewhere…

Was it frozen over?  :) :)

The Navy wouldn’t let you park, but they would let you do landing practice. On downwind you fly right over the Arizona. The water was so clear you could see every detail of the ship. It was awesome. When I landed back at PHNL a C5 touched down behind me right as I turned off the runway. I have a pic somewhere.

The thing about Greenland that many pilot's don't know or forget is it has really high terrain. A lot of airliners have to carry extra oxygen in the event of depressurization or they have "extended capacity" systems and pilots have pre-planned "de-pressurization routes" planned by their carriers. Equally so, the wind across that terrain can create some pretty vicious waves and rotors. Not an easy place to fly over if you plan it safely.

For fun…

Search for Greenland and Iceland around here…

Mooney pilots going between the US and Europe most often follow this route…

Best regards,

Seems like Jose has posted pictures there on his way over.

Middle of the Pacific. Let's just say if the Japanese attacked again my Mooney would be in grave danger.

No ice but clobbered by a wave go into Molokai

Been to BGTL and no not in a mooney, a DC-8.  Got to see the compass swing over 120 degrees while we where flying straight ahead, very disorienting, gps did work up there had to use grid mode and procedures that i have since forgotten now.   runway was painted white when there wasn’t snow on it to keep the sun in the summer from melting it through the tundra. In winter when i went there it was -35d C. When we were to leave the bus driver dropped us off at the hanger but on the wrong side and you couldn’t get through the middle so we walked outside around to the other side. I didn’t put my gloves back on and being outside for 2 mins and my fingertips had mild frostbite in that short time. That kind of cold is nothing to play around with.
