Hi Jared,

When I looked last year I didn't see one.  So I bought the Carenado M20J.  It has a similar panel to my C.   It's just too darn fast!   It does have a full autopilot which I don't but I need one to fly a simulator.

So, I just bought the Carenado M20J. I didn't notice that it doesn't run in XP12. :-(

In real life, I fly an M20C and am working on my instrument rating. I am getting some loggable sim time in a 172 with my CFII, and would like to augment it at home in X-plane.

So, I'm considering:

  • Downgrading to XP11 to use the M20J model.
  • Using another complex plane...maybe an Archer or Bonanza?
  • Building my own M20C. (I kinda wanna do this, even though it's not even a little bit practical. It would be fun for its own merits)
  • Just sim in a 172 and don't overthink it.

If using another complex aircraft, what's a good substitute?

Anyway, here was my answer to that this morning...

I’d go with the VFlyteAir Arrow. You’ll also get a little glass. It comes in two flavors (you get both). One a decent dual G5 emulation with GFC500 autopilot  (I did a little beta testing for the avionics). The other, a decent Aspen emulation.

The new PAE A36 Bonanza is also very nice (I assume you don't care about G1000) . When you read the product description just don't think it comes with a G500 or G5 - those are separately purchased add-ons it's compatible with. The default is basic analog.

and the AFM / X-Aviation M20 collection (which I won't touch with a pitchfork because it doesn't run on Linux).

Curious to know, Are you saying that AFM / X-Aviation M20 collection won't run on Linux ?  or X-plane won't run on Linux?  reason why I ask is the I have X-Plane12 running on Mac  mac mini   Tahoe OS  26.1  which is a Linux derived OS. I just use a C172 stream gauge  but the control stick configuration is totally unrealistic. When you see your   rate of climb indicator  pegging out 2500 fpm  in a climb in a C172  doesn't seem right or the  turn coordinator  indicator that seems to be tied to the input of the user input rather than the airplane flight characteristic  model  when in a  turn.   I primarily use a procedure trainer for the Garmin 430/530 navigator shooting approaches training  but not logging the time.

Yep, sorry about that. Between hopping back and forth between the half-dozen threads here and on the x-plane forum, it seems I got my wires crossed.

Thanks for the advice, Mark! :)
