Gain Panel Space with the GTN 750?

You may mean the GTX 345R if you want to get back transponder space as the GDL 88 is just the ADS-B datalink. If you add just the GDL 88, you will need a transponder to go with it, I believe.

As for gaining panel space, measure what you are taking out and compare it to the size of the GTN 750 (xi?). The 750 is 6" tall, so check and see how much space the avionics you're removing take up.

The easiest path would be the 750 with remote audio if it will fit.  Although I've not seen it with my own eyes, the audio panel sits behind the screen.  When I first got mine, I was a little worried about not having physical buttons for changing the COM, but its really not a big deal.  The remote interface works quite well.

The remote transponder also works quite well but it would require wiring to the tail.  That is where my remote transponder is.  Or, maybe you can move the transponder over to the side.

If you can get the 750 to fit, the size of the screen is really nice.

The 345 wasn't out when I did my upgrade, so I got both the GDL 88 for ADS-B Out on 978 and the 330 ES (then changed that to 335) for ADS-B Out on 1090.  So I have the benefit of ADS-B Out on both 978 and 1090 with ADS-B In on both frequencies with the GDL 88.  The best route now for both ADS-B In/Out would be the GTX 345 with the R version for remote.  The GMA 35c is nicely mounted behind the GTN 750.  For the remote versions you give up 4 data fields on the GTN.  I find that perfectly acceptable, since I also have six data fields on the GTN 650 default page, but that is a consideration.  I had plenty of room so I didn't go remote with the transponder, but can control it through either the GTN or the transponder itself.  Controlling both the audio panel and transponder through the GTN 750 is really nice.

As Larry states below you, need both an audio panel and a transponder either in the panel or remotely.

The answer to your specific question is no. The GDL88 is not a transponder, it is an ADSB data link radio. You need a separate transponder if you have a GDL88.

Don, your avionics shop should have disabled the GDL-88 ADS-B out when they installed your 1090 ES.  The FAA mandate specifies only one ADS-B transmission per airplane.  Of course, you receive both 978 and 1090 on the GDL 88.

I guess the nice thing is that if the Extended Squitter portion of your transponder failed, you could turn your GDL88 transmission back on and stay below FL180.

Sorry, Andy, but you are incorrect.  Almost from the very beginning the GBTs were updated to be able to handle ADS-B Out from an aircraft having both 978 and 1090. Below is the response to an email from me to the FAA in 2014:

Apologies for not answering your BeechTalk post, traffic died down after the first week or so and I haven't been as vigilant in checking the forum.   

When AC 20-165 was first published in May 2010, the ground system wasn't  designed to handle both systems transmitting from the same airplane as it was assumed that most would choose either UAT or 1090ES equipage based on airspace use.  The ground system automation has since been adapted to resolve traffic transmitting with both a 1090ES & UAT system (via Mode S code & flight ID comparison).  Such a system does provide optimal ADS-B-to-ADS-B functionality as you mentioned but is also a more complex system to configure properly (ICAO code & Mode 3/A mismatches =  ATC conflict alerts) as some have experienced.

Generally speaking...

1) For a Mooney...

2) You have an avionics shelf in the back... where the tail cone access panel is...

3) Big G has a couple of boxes designed to be remoted and live on that shelf.

4) Remote Audio panels are going back there somewhere else... :)

5) Remote transponders are going back there...

6) Recently other space saving devices are coming out hard and fast...

7) Panel displays that include all the primary engine monitoring functions...

8) attitude displays that included turn coordinator functions and VSI.....

9) Don’t be surprised at the costs of installation... these things have many wires to tame...

10) What airplane are you trying to get answers for?
 

It really is helpful to have a few extra skills...

This thread has support from a Mooney CFII, who really knows the instruments, down to their circuitry... and is known for getting great direct support from the avionics company... and a bunch of other Avid Mooney aviators... :)

Anthony, the remote audio panel goes behind the GTN750 not in the back. The GTN650 can control a remote transponder but not remote audio panel. GTN750 can control both.
